Apologize

after canceling her even

The headlines were brutal by morning.

*VERA GHOSTS 80K FANS*

*K-TECH STOCKS SLIP AFTER SINGER’S NO-SHOW*

*Who Is Vera Protecting?*

Radha read them while Ria ate cereal, drawing volcanoes on a napkin. “You’re famous, Mama,” Ria said. “Like, volcano famous.”

“Different kind of famous, bug,” Radha said.

At 8:01 AM, Vera posted: _I’m sorry. Family emergency. I chose my family. I’d do it again. But you deserved a show. Tonight. 9 PM. Live. Free. I’ll stay to sign for every single one of you. No masks off, but no one leaves empty handed. -V_

The internet forgave her in minutes.

9 PM. Vera stepped on stage in the white porcelain mask, blue tear catching the light. Same mask from Tokyo. Same excuse. _Still recovering from the flu. Can’t risk getting you all sick._

She sang for two hours straight. No CEO. No contracts. Just voice and truth. Level 1 truth only. Safe.

The signing event started at 11:30 PM. Back room, security tight. Vera’s hand cramped from holding the silver pen. _Stay curious -V. Keep singing -V. Be brave -V._

Then he stepped up to the table.

Mahito Kenji. No suit tonight. Jeans. T shirt. Holding a framed picture of Vera from the Tokyo Dome. And smiling. Actually smiling. Not the boardroom smile Radha had seen in Forbes. A real one.

“You were incredible,” he said. His English was careful, practiced. “I flew from Osaka. Worth it.”

Radha froze. She knew that voice. Kenji Robotics. They’d emailed K-Tech last quarter about AI patents. She’d declined the meeting. Too busy.

“Thank you,” Vera rasped. Flu voice. “For coming so far.”

Mahito set the picture down. “Can you sign it? To Mahito. Please.”

She signed it. _To Mahito, Thank you for believing -V_

He didn’t move. Security shifted behind him.

“Can I ask you something?” he said. “It’s personal. You can say no.”

Radha’s pulse kicked up. No one asked Vera personal questions. The mask stopped them. The mystery stopped them.

“Okay,” she said.

Mahito glanced down, then back up. Still smiling. “Are you married?”

The question hung in the air. Behind the porcelain, Radha’s breath caught.

Married. No. But she was a mom. She was Ria’s. She was CEO. She was Vera. None of those things fit into his question.

“Why?” she asked instead.

Mahito laughed, a little embarrassed. “Sorry. You don’t have to answer. My sister is your biggest fan. She said if I met you, I should ask. She thinks you write love songs like you’ve lost something.”

Radha looked at the framed picture. At his hopeful face. He had no idea. He was just a fan. A man who liked her music and flew to Tokyo and stood in line at midnight.

“No,” Vera said finally. “I’m not married.”

It was Level 1 truth. And it was a truth

Mahito’s smile went wider. “Good. I mean— for my sister. She’ll be happy.” He took the picture, bowed slightly. “Thank you, Vera. For the music. For coming back tonight.”

He walked out. No contract. No threat. Just a fan.

Radha sat there, pen shaking in her hand. The next fan stepped up. A little girl with a glittery notebook.

“Are you really sick?” the girl whispered.

Vera looked at her. Thought of Ria asleep at home, volcano dreams and mango ice cream. Thought of Mahito asking if she was married. Thought of the secret between us.

“No,” she said, quiet. “I’m just being careful.”

Level 2 truth.

She signed the notebook. _For the brave ones -V_

Because some truths had to stay behind the mask.
