Chapter 5 - Stronger Inside

While they sat together in the comfort of Maria’s room, the air turned quiet and serious. Maria looked straight into Alexandra’s eyes and spoke up with all sincerity.

"Girl, listen to me carefully. You need to be strong… you need to learn how to fight for yourself," Maria said firmly but gently. "Because if they see you are weak, if they see you are afraid, then you become an easy target. They will keep stepping on you, thinking you will never fight back."

Alexandra looked down. Her voice was small and full of doubt as she asked, "But how do I even do that, Maria? I don’t know how… I’ve always just stayed quiet and endured it all."

Maria leaned closer, holding her hands tightly. "It’s easy. You start by not caring so much about what they say or think. Don’t let their words live inside your head. Defend yourself, talk back to them when they are cruel, and stand your ground. I want you to learn this so that if ever I’m not with you, you can stand tall and scare them off all by yourself."

Alexandra looked up at her, tears glistening in her eyes. "But… if I talk back, they will hate me more. They will say I am rude or ungrateful."

Maria shook her head immediately, her expression fierce with love for her friend. "Let them say whatever they want! They already say bad things about you even when you are quiet and kind. What difference does it make? You being kind does not give them the right to hurt you. Being strong doesn’t mean you have to be mean or cruel like them. It just means you will no longer let them walk all over your heart."

She stood up and pulled Alexandra gently to her feet, making her look at her own reflection in the mirror.

"Look at yourself, Alex. You are beautiful, you are smart, and you have the kindest heart I know. You are worth so much more than how they treat you. From now on, every time they say something hurtful, you tell yourself: ‘Their words are not my truth.’ And you hold your head high, like this."

Maria demonstrated, lifting her chin and straightening her posture, looking proud and unshakeable.

"See? Like you are wearing armor. No insult, no comparison, no cruelty can touch you unless you let it. You are soft inside, yes… but you are also tough. You are stronger inside than you ever realized."

Alexandra stared at her own reflection. She tried to copy Maria—lifting her chin, straightening her back, and taking a deep breath. For the first time, she didn’t see just a sad, scared girl. She saw a girl who was tired of crying, and ready to try being brave.

"Stronger inside…" Alexandra whispered, letting the words sink deep into her heart.

"Exactly," Maria smiled, hugging her tight. "And I will be right here helping you every step of the way. We will build that strength together. Just think and say to yourself: you're living for the thrill."

Alexandra repeated Maria’s words softly, whispering it to herself like a vow.

"I'm living for the thrill."

She said it again, a little louder this time, letting the meaning settle in her mind. It wasn’t just a phrase anymore—it became her promise to herself. She wasn’t here to please anyone, or to be what they wanted her to be. She was here to live, to grow, and to find her own happiness, no matter how hard the road got.

Maria nodded proudly, seeing the change in her friend’s eyes. The fear was still there, yes, but now there was something else too: courage.

She stood a little taller, her shoulders no longer hunched in surrender, her chin lifting just as Maria had shown her. For years, she had shrunk herself down—trying to take up less space, speak softer, exist quietly so she wouldn’t draw anger or criticism. But in this moment, she felt that old habit begin to crack.

“Living for the thrill,” she murmured once more, and this time, a faint but determined smile touched her lips. It didn’t mean life would suddenly be easy, or that the cruelty would stop overnight. It simply meant she would no longer let it define her. She wouldn’t let their sharp words carve into her soul anymore.

Maria stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her in a warm, steady embrace. “That’s my girl,” she whispered against Alexandra’s hair. “Remember this feeling. Hold onto it when you’re back in that cold house. Hold onto it when Kiara and her friends try to tear you down. You aren’t the weak, helpless girl they think you are—and one day, everyone will see exactly how strong you truly are.”

As the afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, bathing the room in soft gold, Alexandra felt lighter than she had in months. Her injuries still ached, her heart still carried old wounds, and the road ahead remained steep and lonely—but for the first time, she wasn’t walking it as a victim. She was walking it like a survivor.

When evening came and it was finally time to head home, Maria walked her all the way to her gate, giving her hand one last reassuring squeeze. “I’ll be right here waiting for you tomorrow. You never have to face anything alone again.”

Alexandra nodded, her heart calm and steady. She turned and walked toward the front door—not with the usual heavy, fearful steps, but with purpose. Every beat of her heart echoed that powerful new promise:

I’m stronger inside. And I will not break.

Even as she stepped back inside the house where she was always made to feel unwanted, she carried a quiet armor no one could see—and no one could take away.

When she entered the house, they didn’t even acknowledge Alexandra’s presence. They were all busy glued to their phones, laughing and chatting among themselves, not even bothering to look up as she stepped inside.

Maya was eyeing her slowly from head to toe, her expression twisted in clear disgust. She leaned close to another cousin and whispered something sharp, followed by both of them letting out loud, mocking laughter — loud enough for Alexandra to hear every bit of it.

“Look at her… acting all high and mighty. As if spending time at someone else’s house makes her any better than she really is.”

But for the very first time… Alexandra didn’t flinch. She didn’t lower her gaze, didn’t hurry her steps, didn’t feel that familiar sting of tears pricking her eyes. Instead, she simply lifted her chin — exactly like Maria taught her — kept her face calm and unbothered, and walked straight past them toward her room, as if they were nothing more than invisible shadows.

She could feel their eyes burning into her back, waiting for her to react, waiting to see her hurt and small like always — but tonight, they got exactly what Maria promised: nothing.

Before she closed her door, she paused for just one second, her voice steady, clear, and surprisingly firm — something none of them had ever heard from her before.

“Enjoy yourselves,” she said simply — no anger, no bitterness… just indifference.

The laughter died instantly. They stared at her, stunned — confused that the girl they always treated like dirt suddenly carried herself like she was above their cruel games.

Once inside her small, quiet room, she leaned back against the closed door, letting out a slow breath. Her heart still beat fast — she wasn’t fearless, not yet — but she smiled softly to herself.

"I didn’t answer back with anger… I answered back with my silence. I didn’t let them win."

She whispered those powerful words again — like a shield wrapped tight around her soul.

Tonight, she realized: true strength wasn’t shouting back… it was walking away and refusing to let their hate weigh her down.
