ch 2- Where Paths Begin to Turn

Some decisions don’t ask for permission

they quietly change everything.

(Third Person POV)

The operating room doors swung open.

“Critical patient. Severe internal bleeding. BP dropping!”

“Prep for surgery.”

Dr. Sasha Shergill stepped forward, already slipping on her gloves.

The mask followed covering her face.

Hiding everything except her eyes.

And somehow that was enough.

Her hazel-brown eyes, softened with faint golden hues under the surgical lights, remained steady—calm in a way that didn’t need effort.

There was no panic in them.

No flicker of uncertainty.

Only focus.

“Vitals.”

“Unstable.”

A single nod.

“Scalpel.”

The room moved instantly.

But she didn’t rush.

Because rushing led to mistakes.

And mistakes weren’t allowed.

Her hands worked with precision.

But it was her eyes that led everything.

Tracking.

Reading.

Understanding.

Even as the monitor beeped faster.

Even as tension rose around her,her gaze didn’t waver.

“Doctor, we’re losing him!”

“I know.”

Her voice remained calm.

Unshaken.

Because the calm in her eyes wasn’t just discipline.

It was control.

“Clamp.”

“Sponges.”

A small shift.

A precise movement.

“There.”

A pause.

A breath held across the room.

“Stabilizing…”

The monitor steadied.

Alive.

Only then did the tension ease.

Sasha stepped back.

Removed her gloves slowly.

Then her mask.

But even without it the calm remained.

Because what people saw during surgery wasn’t a mask.

It was her.

A few minutes later she walked down the corridor toward her cabin.

The hospital moved around her.

Voices.

Footsteps.

Urgency.

But none of it touched her pace.

She entered her cabin, closing the door softly behind her.

Silence settled instantly.

Familiar.

Controlled.

She sat down, opening the file of her previous patient.

Reports.

Vitals.

Recovery notes.

Her eyes moved steadily across the data analyzing, confirming, correcting.

Response stable… no complications… monitor for next 24 hours.

She leaned back slightly.

Not tired.

Not distracted.

Just… thinking.

Then....

The door burst open.

“Sashaaa!”

Sasha didn’t even look up.

“You’re loud,” she said, flipping a page in the file.

“And you’re boring,” came the instant reply.

A smile tugged at Sasha’s lips despite herself.

She looked up.

Prisha Rathore stood there—bright, energetic, completely unapologetic.

“You just came out of surgery, didn’t you?” Prisha asked, dropping into the chair.

“Ten minutes ago.”

“And you’re already back to files?” she groaned.

Sasha shrugged lightly.

“Work doesn’t wait.”

Prisha leaned forward, narrowing her eyes playfully.

“You know, outside this hospital—you’re actually fun.”

Sasha raised an eyebrow.

“Am I?”

“Yes,” Prisha grinned.

“Laughs, talks, even smiles properly. Shocking, I know.”

A small laugh escaped Sasha.

“Don’t get used to it.”

Before Prisha could reply a knock came.

“All doctors to the conference room. Immediately.”

The room filled quickly.

Doctors. Interns. Staff.

The senior official stepped forward.

“There is a medical deployment requirement in Leh-Ladakh.”

Murmurs spread.

“The terrain is extreme. Oxygen levels are low. Resources are limited.”

Silence followed.

“You will be handling critical injuries—gunshots, patrol-related trauma, emergency evacuations.”

A pause.

“This is not a request.”

The room stilled.

“It is a mandatory field assignment.”

“You will inform your families. You have three days to prepare.”

His gaze stopped at Sasha.

“Dr. Sasha Shergill you will lead this unit.”

She didn’t hesitate.

“Yes, sir.”

“Dr. Prisha Rathore, you will be part of the same team.”

Prisha’s eyes lit up slightly.

“Well… we’re not getting separated,” she whispered.

Sasha didn’t respond....but her silence wasn’t resistance.

“Additional doctors and medical interns will also be assigned.”

A group of young interns exchanged nervous glances.

“This will not be easy.”

“You will be working under pressure, in extreme climate, with limited resources.”

“But you are required.”

The room fell silent again.

Prisha leaned slightly toward Sasha.

“Well… looks like we’re going to the mountains.”

Sasha didn’t reply.

But her eyes held something steady.

Miles away......

inside a secured headquarters in New Delhi

He stood straight.

Uniform still carrying traces of the mission.

“Report.”

The commanding officer’s voice was firm.

He began.

Clear. Precise. Unemotional.

“Mission objective secured. Target neutralized. Evidence retrieved.”

His tone remained controlled.

Then “There was something else.”

The commander’s gaze sharpened.

“A mark. Carved. Deliberate. Not random.”

He described it precisely.

Silence followed.

The commander leaned back slightly.

“We’ll assign that to another unit.”

A pause.

“You’ve done your part.”

Then

his voice shifted slightly.

“Well done… Captain Agastya Singh Thakur.”

The name settled.

Revealed.

Agastya saluted.

“Yes, sir.”

“You and your team are being moved off active covert operations.”

A rare thing.

“You’ll be deployed to Leh-Ladakh.”

“For inspection and support duties.”

Another pause.

“It’s not entirely quiet there,” the commander added.

“Border tension exists. Stay alert.”

Agastya nodded once.

“Understood, sir.”

Back in their quarters.....

Viper...aka Rudraksh Rathore....looked at him.

“Well?”

Agastya spoke simply.

“No missions. For months.”

Blaze....aka Samar Kapoor....grinned instantly.

“You’re joking.”

“I’m not.”

Cipher.....aka Sameer Vedi....leaned forward.

“That’s rare.”

Ghost...aka Anirudh Vedi...gave a faint smirk.

“And the catch?”

“Leh-Ladakh.”

A pause.

Then...

Samar laughed.

“Mountains, cold, no active ops? I’ll take it.”

“Not completely quiet,” Agastya added.

Rudraksh nodded.

“Still… better than bullets every night.”

“Three days,” Agastya said.

“For family.”

“For whatever you need.”

The room shifted instantly.

Plans.

Relief.

Energy.

“Finally,” Rudraksh muttered.

Sameer smirked.

“Three days is enough.”

Anirudh leaned back.

“Enjoy it while it lasts.”

Agastya remained silent.

But something eased.

Just slightly.

Two different orders.

Two different worlds.

One destination
