Sun has begun to set quietly outside, I sat on the couch facing her bed. Staring at her as she slept unaware of everything that was going on.
Vaidhai.
We don't know her name, or any other detail. But from now on her new name is Vaidhai Malhotra.
She's now the adopted daughter of Malhotra family.
To keep her safe, and also because we can't leave her alone for now.
Thankfully, the ambulance wasn't late, or little delay would've cost her life.
Through she's out of danger now.
I set the laptop on the table, turning to face her. The soft sound of her breathing filled the room, then the beep of the mashine echoed in sync.
Malhotra's eldest daughter was lost ages ago, no one has found about her whereabouts. Neither do anyone knows she's been lost.
Some people had it pointed out—how can the daughter be lost when the family themselves own a security company?
To protect their business they had to say she was studying abroad.
And for those who know—they've been silenced already—unless they're from singhaniya family.
Malhotra and Singhania has been friends for years.
We've been eachother's biggest support in business, and in underworld.
My mother told me to take care of her, Because she's now my temporary fiance.
This marriage was planned before I was even born. A childish thing most of the girls plan.
The marriage between me and Vaidhai was decided because of their friendship.
But no one had thought about her being lost.
I sighed, leaning back on the couch. The silence indeed was boring.
Marriage ceremony, functions, invitation, parties, rituals everything has to be perfect but fast.
We have to get married before her surgery, Because after surgery she may lose her senses.
May become—A fool for a year, someone who will be nothing more than an older five year old kid.
And I'll be the one handling her stubborness.
Her long hair settled quietly over the pillow, soft dark spots on her face and small scratches from accident.
Her tanned skin glowed under the light of lamp beside her bed, making her look more fragile and innocent.
Innocence that wasn't for me.
...
...
According to the medical reports, she's quite weak physically. She has to be in good health before marriage, after all she going soon to be wife.
I want the best for her.
The screen of my phone lit up with the soft ring.
I pushed away my thoughts, reaching for the phone before swiping the log aside.
"Yeah?" I spoke. keeping my voice calm dispite the frustration.
I kept my eyes on her, noting every small change in her expression. Every soft mummer she whispered.
"We didn't find anyone there." The voice from the call pushed unwanted thoughts away.
I sighed.
"Any clue?" Almost a whisper, just enough to be audiable but not enough to wake her up.
I took a small sip of my black coffee, the taste burning on my tongue.
"No, boss." Nothing but disappointment.
I wasn't able to see him but I know how many times he must have nodded and shook his head.
...
...
Days went on like sand from fists, I wonder if the time is challanging my patience. I feel more like a human than a sleeping bear.
But I wasn't doing anything more than walking around talking to my therapist.
"Thanks." I smiled, going back to my ward as the nurse smiled back with a nod towards me.
Formal.
That's how everyone interact with me. Always polite, always formal. The environment isn't annoying as before, but it does irritate me.
I turned towards the corridor, taking a different path towards my room, but before I could take another step someone bumped into me.
"Ouch!"
I stared at her, before realising it must have hurt.
"I'm—I'm sorry, I didn't mean it." I tried to apologise quickly but she just nodded.
"No, it was my fault..." She replied, a smile on her face. "I was running after all."
I stepped back, leaving space for her but before that.
"You?" Her hands shoots out in a gentle handshake.
I didn't hesitate. "I'm Vaidhai." I quickly replied.
Her slightly blue yet black hair shined in the messy bun, soft eyes glinting in a dark brown colour. She was wearing a simple outfit.
But was looking quite pretty.
Her hands warm as they wrapped around mine.
I turned to leave, smiling until I looked into the reflection of her in the glass pot.
Wiping her hand—the one that touched mine.
I smiled.
