CHAPTER 2

The school bell rang, echoing through the empty hallways. The students spilled out of classrooms, chattering and laughing as they headed for the bus. The setting sun painted the sky with vibrant colors – deep purple and fiery orange merging into a dazzling red. It was the kind of evening that made everything feel magical, yet there was an undercurrent of tension in the air, as if the world had paused to hold its breath.

‎Astra stood outside the school gates, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He watched the sky change, feeling that something important was about to happen. He turned, scanning the crowd for Richeza. He had become somewhat of a protector for her since they met. Richeza, with her shy smile and thoughtful eyes, had a quiet strength that intrigued him. But today, she seemed different. She was quiet, almost lost in her own thoughts.

‎"Hey, Richeza!" Astra called, waving his hand to get her attention. She looked over, her crimson eyes glancing up briefly before looking back at the ground. He felt a pang of concern. They had only recently formed a friendship, but he felt an urge to support her.

‎When she was near, Astra noticed the way shadows seemed to cling to her. The colorful sunset should have made her smile, but instead, the hues seemed to deepen the shadows on her face. "What's wrong?" he asked softly, concerned.

‎"Nothing," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

‎Astra narrowed his eyes slightly, not convinced. "You're bad at lying."

‎Richeza stayed silent, her gaze still fixed on her shoes as they walked down the quiet street. The fading light cast long shadows, and the world around them felt different, as if they were stepping into another reality. The laughter of other students faded with each step they took further from the school, leaving only the sound of their footsteps.

‎"Really, Richeza. You can tell me anything. I'm here for you," Astra said, his tone light but with a seriousness behind it. "You're my guardian. Your responsibility is my responsibility too."

‎He stopped walking and turned to face her fully, hoping she would see the sincerity in his eyes. Richeza paused, taking a deep breath. The distant clouds were streaked with pink and golden hues now, mirroring the conflict brewing inside her.

‎"Thanks," she finally managed to say, her voice trembling. Astra smiled gently, but the worry in his heart only deepened. He wanted to dig deeper, to understand the darkness that seemed to follow her, but he didn't want to push her too hard.

‎As they walked, Astra thought about their first meeting. Richeza had been sitting alone in the library, books strewn around her like fallen leaves in a forest. He felt drawn to her, as if she were a lighthouse in a stormy sea. The strength of her spirit fascinated him, but today that light seemed dimmed.

‎"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked again, keeping his voice soft. The air around them felt thick with unspoken words. Richeza looked up, her eyes searching the distant horizon.

‎"It's just… sometimes I feel like I'm carrying a lot of weight. Not just for myself but for others too," she admitted, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of her sweater. There was something deeper there, an unformed shadow lurking just beyond her words.

‎Astra felt the weight of her sentence. He could understand the pressure of expectations, the need to be strong for others while feeling fragile inside. "You don't have to carry it alone, you know," he said gently. "I can help."

‎Suddenly, a loud crash broke through the calmness of the evening. Both Astra and Richeza jumped, their hearts racing. They turned to see a group of older students nearby, their laughter sharp and harsh as they knocked over a trash can. The peaceful air shattered, leaving behind an unsettling tension that heightened the thrill of the moment.

‎Richeza's face turned pale as she watched the scene unfold. Astra felt her grip tighten around her backpack, and he stepped closer to her. "Hey, ignore them. They're just being ridiculous," he said, trying to sound more confident than he felt.

‎But Richeza shook her head, her eyes reflecting the fear that now gripped her. "It's not just that," she said, her voice quivering. "It's what they might do next."

‎Astra remembered stories he'd heard about those students. They thrived on chaos, seeking to intimidate anyone weaker than themselves. Astra felt anger bubbling within him. He wanted to protect Richeza, to assure her that everything would be alright.

‎"Let's just walk a different way," he suggested, taking her hand softly. Richeza hesitated but then nodded, her trust in him shining through her uncertainty.

‎As they took a path away from the noise, the sky continued to darken, the purple and orange giving way to the deep navy of night. Astra felt the shadows creeping in around them, but with Richeza by his side, he felt a sense of purpose.
