Chapter 4:-Nighttime Whispers,The First Brick of Trust

Because of the rigid traditions, breakfast was eaten in strict, respectful silence. Jungkook kept his head down, serving Mama Kim and Taehyung first, behaving as the ultimate filial bride in front of the family and little Jimin. Not a single personal word was exchanged.

It wasn't until late that night that the masks could finally be taken off.

The compound was pitch black, the only light coming from the single, dim kerosene lamp in their private bedroom. The heavy wooden door was locked. The silence of the 1974s countryside was absolute.

Taehyung sat on the edge of the kang, his jaw tight as he massaged his right thigh, which had swollen slightly from a full day of heavy farm labor. His breathing was heavy, laced with suppressed pain.

Jungkook quietly walked over, carrying a small basin of warm water and a clean rag he had prepared. He didn't look like the trembling, silent bride from the morning; his movements were grounded, efficient, and calm.

Taehyung froze, his posture turning defensive. "What are you doing?"

"Your leg," Jungkook said softly, keeping his voice low so it wouldn't travel through the thin walls to Mama Kim’s room. He sat on a small stool near the bed. "In my hometown, I learned a specific method for deep tissue strain. It relaxes the muscles around old injuries. If you trust me... let me try."

Taehyung stared at him, his sharp military instincts analyzing the pure sincerity in Jungkook's doe eyes. There was no pity in Jungkook's gaze—only practical, grounded care. Taehyung’s pride softened slightly, and he slowly let his hands drop, allowing Jungkook to roll up his coarse trousers.

The scar on Taehyung's leg was long and jagged, a harsh reminder of the border conflict. Jungkook didn't flinch. He soaked the rag in warm water, wrung it out, and gently pressed it against the tight muscle before applying steady, precise pressure with his thumbs.

Taehyung let out a sharp, quiet gasp, his fingers gripping the edge of the mattress as Jungkook hit a tension point. But within minutes, a soothing, long-forgotten warmth began to spread through his aching joint.

"You..." Taehyung whispered, looking down at the top of Jungkook’s head. "You aren't as timid as you looked today in front of my mother."

Jungkook offered a tiny, private smile, his hands never stopping their gentle, rhythmic movements.

"A new bride who talks back to her elders loses her standing in the village before she even begins. I know how to be quiet when I need to be."

Taehyung let out a low, rare chuckle, the deep sound vibrating pleasantly in the small room. The suspicion in his heart dissolved, replaced by a profound, growing respect. This wasn't a fragile child he had married; this was a partner who understood strategy.

"You're smart," Taehyung murmured, his voice softening completely as the pain in his leg began to fade. "My mother is strict, but she is fair. As long as you play your part outside, I will protect you in this village."

Jungkook looked up, his eyes meeting Taehyung’s in the dim lamplight. For the first time, they weren't looking at each other as strangers forced into a marriage, but as two individuals forming a silent, powerful pact.

"Thank you, Taehyung," Jungkook whispered.

"Go to sleep," Taehyung said gently, his eyes holding a warmth that wasn't there before. "From tomorrow, we start planning how to make this life better.”

“Together”Jungkook whispered.

The word hung softly in the dim, kerosene-lit room. Taehyung’s chest tightened in a strange, entirely new way. He nodded once, a solemn, silent vow passing between them, before he reached out and blew out the lamp. That night, though they still slept on opposite sides of the kang, the heavy barrier between the modern corporate worker and the retired soldier had completely cracked.
