The Rearview Mirror

The interior of the armored sedan was a masterclass in suffocating luxury. The seats were wrapped in flawless, midnight-black leather, and the soundproofing was so absolute that the chaotic rush of Seoul's highway traffic felt like a distant, muted hum.

Sitting in the back, Reyansh stared out the tinted window, watching the rain-soaked concrete of the city blur past. Despite the plush comfort, a strange, electric tension hung in the air, radiating entirely from the man sitting in the front passenger seat.

Kim Do-jin hadn't spoken a single word since they left the airport. He sat perfectly straight, his broad shoulders filling out his tailored suit, his sharp profile silhouetted against the dim light of the dashboard.

*He really is something else,* Reyansh thought, his mind wandering as he subtly tilted his head.

With Do-yoon distracted, frantically typing away on his phone next to him, Reyansh found his eyes drifting toward the front of the car. He leaned slightly to the side, peering through the gap between the headrests to steal a glance at the enigmatic older brother.

From this angle, Reyansh could see the sharp, aristocratic line of Do-jin’s jaw, the immaculate style of his dark hair, and the effortless, commanding posture that seemed inherent to his very being. There was a raw, dangerous elegance to him that was entirely hypnotic.

*Wow...* Reyansh thought to himself, a soft voiceover running through his head as a faint, amused smile touched his lips. *He is dangerously handsome. Seriously, if I were a woman, I would definitely fall for him without a second thought. He looks like a main lead stepped straight out of a classic noir film.*

Reyansh was so caught up in his own playful critique that he forgot one crucial detail: Kim Do-jin was a man trained to notice the slightest shift in his environment. He didn't need to look back to know he was being watched.

Up front, Do-jin’s gaze flicked upward. His dark, piercing eyes locked onto the rearview mirror.

Through the silver glass, his eyes collided directly with Reyansh’s.

Reyansh froze, his breath hitching in his throat. Catching someone’s eye in a mirror was always a bit awkward, but looking at Do-jin felt like being caught in the crosshairs of a laser. His heart skipped a frantic beat, a sudden, warm flush creeping up his neck. He immediately tried to look away, pretending to be intensely fascinated by a random skyscraper outside his window.

But it was too late.

Do-jin had seen the entire thing. He had tracked the exact moment Reyansh’s curious eyes had wandered over to him, had noticed the slight, soft parting of the boy's lips, and had caught the exact second Reyansh realized he’d been busted.

For a man whose face was usually an unreadable mask of ice, a sudden, intoxicating warmth bloomed in Do-jin’s chest. The sheer innocence of Reyansh’s curiosity was a drug to his dark soul.

Slowly, deliberately, the corner of Do-jin’s cold lips curved upward. It wasn't his usual sharp, calculated smirk. It was a slight, genuine, and impossibly handsome smile, meant purely for the eyes watching him in the mirror.

Reyansh, who was still trying to look anywhere but the front seat, caught the reflection of that smile out of the corner of his eye. His chest tightened with a strange, fluttering sensation. The terrifying aura that had surrounded the mafia leader at the airport suddenly felt layered with something else—something deeply personal, intense, and utterly consuming.

"Hey, Ansh," Do-yoon’s loud voice suddenly broke the silence, breaking the spell as he shoved his phone in front of Reyansh's face. "Look at this restaurant menu! It's right next to your campus. We are definitely ordering from here tomorrow."

"Uh... yeah, looks amazing, Yoon," Reyansh stammered, clearing his throat and forcing his focus away from the front mirror.

As Reyansh tried to calm his racing pulse, Do-jin’s smile slowly faded back into his usual stern expression, but his eyes remained fixed on the rearview mirror, watching over his precious passenger. Reyansh thought he was just playing a harmless game of curiosity with his friend's handsome older brother. He had no idea that to Kim Do-jin, every look shared was a binding contract—and Reyansh had just signed his name.
