Dust and Promises
### The Fall of the Rossis
Rain struck the penthouse windows while music kept playing in the enormous, brightly lit ballroom.
Champagne.
Glittering dresses.
Fake laughter.
And at the center of it all stood:
Valentina Rossi.
Beautiful. Elegant. Impeccable.
In a fitted black dress, a glass in her hand, she smiled as if the whole world were beneath her feet.
Because her entire life had been exactly that.
Luxury.
Control.
Power.
"Valentina, are you coming to Ibiza this summer, or are you going to keep ignoring us?" one of her friends asked, laughing.
"Depends if I find something better to do."
"You're unbearable."
"And yet you love me."
The girls burst out laughing.
Valentina barely smiled, used to everyone revolving around her. Not because she was cruel. She had simply grown up learning that weakness was dangerous.
The Rossis were not just any family.
They were a dynasty.
Hotels. Investments. Vineyards.
Old money mixed with ruthless ambition.
And her father expected perfection.
Always.
The phone in her hand vibrated.
Dad.
Her smile faded, if only a little.
"I have to go."
"Now? The party just started."
"Then survive without me."
She took her designer purse and left the room between glances and greetings.
The private elevator carried her straight to the top floor of the Rossi building.
The silence up there was different.
Heavy.
Cold.
The door to her father's office was already open.
Ricardo Rossi did not even lift his eyes from the documents.
"You're late."
"I was downstairs. At the gala. The one you organized."
"Sit down."
That made something tighten in her chest.
Her father never asked. He ordered.
Valentina slowly sat across from the enormous dark-wood desk.
Then she noticed something strange.
Open whiskey.
Loose tie.
Shadows under his eyes.
Her father looked... tired.
And that was not normal.
"What happened?"
Ricardo set the glass down slowly.
"We're losing the company."
The world seemed to go silent.
Valentina gave a short, incredulous laugh.
"That's not funny."
"I'm not joking."
She lowered her purse onto her lap.
"What do you mean, losing it?"
"Bad investments. Debt. A partner betrayed us. The banks want to collect before the end of the year."
For the first time in years, Valentina felt real fear.
Not social fear.
Not fear of ridicule.
Actual fear.
"But... we're the Rossis."
"And that doesn't mean anything anymore."
The words hit harder than the storm outside.
Valentina swallowed.
"You'll fix it."
Her father finally lifted his eyes.
And she understood something horrible.
He could not fix it.
"There is one solution," he said.
She frowned.
"I don't like the sound of that."
Ricardo slid a document across the desk.
One surname stood out above all the rest.
Blackwood.
"What is this?"
"An agreement."
"A business agreement?"
Silence.
Then she understood.
And slowly raised her gaze.
"No."
"Valentina..."
"No."
Her father's face hardened.
"We need this alliance."
"You want to sell me?"
"I want to save this family."
"I'm your daughter, not a contract!"
Ricardo slammed his hand against the desk.
"Everything you have exists because of this family!"
The silence fell brutally between them.
Valentina felt her eyes burn.
She was not going to cry.
Never in front of him.
"Who is he?"
"A rancher from Montana."
She let out an incredulous laugh.
"A what?"
"His family owns land, oil, and cattle. A great deal of money. He wants to expand his investments into the city."
"Then he should look for a partner, not a wife."
"He set conditions."
Valentina stood abruptly.
"Then tell him to go to hell."
She grabbed her purse and walked toward the door.
"The wedding is in three weeks."
She stopped.
Air stopped entering her lungs.
"You can't force me."
"If you refuse this... we'll lose everything."
Valentina turned slowly.
And for the first time, she saw something worse than authority in her father's eyes.
Desperation.
"What's his name?"
Ricardo hesitated for only a second.
"Ethan Blackwood."
Rain kept falling against the city windows as Valentina Rossi's perfect world began to collapse.
