Episode 1 — “Names Matter”

At 7:00 AM, the iron clicked off in the quiet Malik kitchen. Sana Malik stood holding Ayaan’s school shirt, staring at it longer than necessary. In her eyes there was tired love mixed with fear of letting him go. Ayaan, already tying his shoes, didn’t notice her silence. He casually warned her not to burn the shirt, and she replied without humor that she hoped she would—just so he might stay home a little longer. Ayaan sighed, saying that wasn’t how college worked. He ate quickly, breaking his paratha in a rush, while his gaze briefly stopped at the framed photo of Colonel Imran Malik on the wall. His expression softened with quiet pain as he thought of his father. For a moment, his hand almost rose in a salute but dropped before it completed the gesture. Sana noticed everything but said nothing. She simply told him to come straight home, and when he agreed and accidentally replied “copy,” she froze for a second, as if something from the past had returned. Without reacting, she pushed his lunchbox toward him and told him to go.

At 7:40 AM, the Khan house was already loud with discipline. General Kamran Khan finished his push-ups and called for inspection. Zara stood perfectly ready, her posture sharp and controlled, while Zoya lay under a blanket refusing to cooperate, calling it a human rights violation. Kamran pulled the blanket off to find Zoya wearing Zara’s ID card again, leading to another argument about their constant switching. Zara looked annoyed, Zoya looked entertained, and Kamran looked exhausted. Ayesha Khan entered the room speaking on two phones, joking that the house was either an army base or a reality show. She greeted both daughters warmly, while Kamran sighed that he had raised one officer and one problem. Ayesha corrected him, saying he had actually raised two future politicians.

By 9:10 AM, Ayaan was sitting quietly in the corner seat of his college hall, deliberately choosing a place near the exit as if safety depended on it. Hamza dropped beside him, full of energy, teasing him for looking like someone who had received a tax notice. Ayaan denied it, while Hamza offered him a samosa despite it being early morning. Before they could continue, the class representative Mishal arrived and strictly ordered no eating in the hall. Hamza quickly hid the samosa and pretended it was medical food prescribed by “Dr. Hunger,” which she ignored. Suddenly, the atmosphere changed when Zara entered the hall with calm perfection, followed by Zoya, who walked in casually and bumped into her sister while fixing her hair. Hamza whispered excitedly about the twins, while Ayaan stayed quiet, staring without realizing it. Zoya noticed his gaze and gave him a quick playful wink, making him immediately look away in confusion.

At 11:30 AM in the canteen, Ayaan only wanted tea because it felt simple and safe. Zara stood beside him analyzing the overpriced menu, while Zoya casually took his tea token and drank from it without permission, calling it too sweet and comparing it to his “lies.” Hamza arrived with samosas claiming peace offering status, while Mishal accused him of cutting the line and ended up taking a samosa “as evidence.” In the middle of this chaos, Bawarchi Uncle handed Ayaan his tea and casually mentioned it was prepared the same way his father used to take it. That simple sentence froze Ayaan completely. When he asked if the uncle knew his father, the old man simply said Colonel Imran Malik was a good man. Zoya quietly placed a samosa on Ayaan’s tray without looking at him, telling him not to get emotional and walking away immediately, as if she couldn’t handle the moment herself.

At 3:40 PM, the teacher assigned a group project on Army and Government, forcing Ayaan, Zara, Zoya, Hamza, and Mishal into one group. Mishal immediately declared herself leader, while Zoya disagreed and voted for Ayaan, Zara supported Mishal for structure, and Hamza joked that he voted for snacks. The disagreement ended with a coin toss, and Mishal became the leader. She scheduled the meeting for 4:00 PM in the library.

At 4:11 PM, rain poured heavily outside the library. Zara arrived early, organized and focused. Mishal came on time with neatly prepared notes. Hamza arrived late eating chips, and Zoya arrived slightly soaked but still smiling. Ayaan had been standing outside since 3:45 PM, overthinking everything. When he finally entered, Zara silently handed him a paper, and their fingers briefly touched. In that moment of confusion—between Zara’s seriousness and Zoya’s familiarity—Ayaan mistakenly said “Thanks, Zoya.” The room went completely silent. Zara froze, Zoya stopped smiling, Hamza dropped his chips, and Mishal demanded correct names immediately. Ayaan quickly corrected himself, but the damage was already done. Zara stood up quietly and left without argument, while Zoya followed shortly after, telling him he had messed up. Ayaan was left alone, overwhelmed with regret, realizing how one mistake had broken the group apart.

That evening at 7:30 PM, Sana Malik found Ayaan’s PMA form and sat down on the floor in silence, as if the weight of it was too heavy to hold. When Ayaan entered the house, he immediately understood something was wrong. Sana told him calmly that he had already started moving toward a path like his father’s. Ayaan insisted it was just a mistake, but Sana said mistakes still hurt, especially when they feel like losing someone twice. Ayaan knelt and promised he was still there, but Sana turned away, unable to respond. The door closed between them, heavy with unspoken fear.

Later that night, Ayaan’s phone buzzed with a message: “Library roof. 8 AM. Only you. – Z.” He stared at it, unsure whether it was from Zara or Zoya. Outside the frame of Colonel Imran Malik on the wall, the silence seemed heavier than before, as if even the past was watching him choose his next step.
