Chapter 4

Something Quietly Growing

Days didn’t stay as just days anymore.

What started as small conversations slowly turned into something that felt like a routine—something familiar, something Taehyung began to wait for without realizing it.

Jungkook didn’t feel like just a classmate now.

He felt like a presence.

At some point, their messages became natural—Instagram chats turning into long conversations, small updates about school, random thoughts, jokes that didn’t need context.

And somewhere in between all of that, Jungkook started calling him something that made Taehyung pause every time.

Best friend.

It shouldn’t have meant much.

But it did.

In school too, things changed quietly.

A “hi” in the hallway.

A glance in class.

A small conversation that didn’t feel forced anymore.

They spoke more freely now, like the space between them had softened.

And Jungkook… Jungkook was different in a way that was hard to ignore.

He teased Taehyung whenever he got the chance.

Sometimes it was just a casual comment, sometimes he would suddenly come closer just to mess with him, sometimes—without any warning—he would lightly pull his cheeks as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

And Jungkook knew.

He knew exactly what effect he had.

Because every time he came close, Taehyung’s entire system would freeze for a second.

His thoughts would go blank.

His heartbeat would shift.

His words would get stuck somewhere between his mind and his mouth.

And people noticed it.

Not in a loud way. Not in a way that needed questions.

Just small glances. Small awareness.

But no one said anything.

Because on the surface, it was nothing.

Just two classmates. Just normal interaction.

But inside Taehyung, it was never just that.

One afternoon, during a free period, the classroom felt lighter than usual.

Books were open, but no one was really studying. Conversations floated across desks. Laughter came and went without reason.

Taehyung was sitting with Jimin when the question came.

“Do you have a crush on someone?”

Jimin asked it casually, like it was just another topic.

Taehyung immediately shook his head.

“No.”

But Jimin didn’t believe it that easily.

“Tell me,” he insisted, leaning closer. “I won’t say anything.”

Taehyung hesitated.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then slowly, he opened his notebook.

Flipped to the last page.

And wrote one name.

Jungkook.

Just that.

No explanation. No decoration. Just the name sitting quietly on paper.

Jimin stared at it.

His reaction came instantly.

“YOU found THIS monkey only?” he blurted out, half shocked, half laughing. “Didn’t you get anyone better?”

Taehyung’s ears turned red immediately.

“Just shut up,” he muttered, trying to hide his face. “And don’t tell anyone.”

Jimin raised his hands in surrender, still laughing.

“Okay okay, deal. I won’t tell anyone about your crush.”

“And you don’t tell anyone about mine,” Taehyung added quickly.

They made a deal then.

A quiet exchange of secrets.

What Taehyung didn’t know at that time was how strange coincidence could be.

Jimin’s crush and Taehyung’s crush… shared the same name.

Not the same person.

But the same name.

Life, for some reason, had made even that small detail overlap.

And just like that, Jimin became the first person who truly knew.

Later, there was another friend too.

Jenny.

She was in a different class, a humanities student, staying in the school hostel. Bold, expressive, someone who spoke without hesitation. The kind of person who made things feel lighter just by being around.

She also had a boyfriend in Taehyung’s class.

Eunwoo.

During a festival break, Jenny came to stay over at Taehyung’s place for a day and a night. Taehyung had gone with his father to pick her up from the hostel.

That night, something slipped.

Taehyung’s private Instagram account.

The one he never showed anyone.

The one where he kept everything.

His thoughts. His feelings. His silence. His confusion. His happiness. His pain.

And most of all—

Jungkook.

Screenshots. Saved pictures. Small notes written like diary entries. Everything he felt but never said out loud.

Jenny saw it.

And Taehyung panicked instantly.

A sharp, immediate fear rising in his chest.

He made her promise.

She wouldn’t tell anyone.

And she did.

The next day, they went to school together by bus as if nothing had happened.

But during recess, everything almost collapsed again.

As Taehyung stepped out of the classroom, Eunwoo came near casually—too casually—and started saying something.

Jungkook’s name.

“Jungkook… Jungkook…”

At first, Taehyung didn’t even understand what was happening.

Then it clicked.

His body froze.

His eyes immediately moved to Jenny.

Then back to Eunwoo.

And suddenly, everything felt too loud.

He walked away fast.

Straight to the washroom in front of the classroom.

His head felt heavy, dizzy, like his thoughts were collapsing into one another.

He knows.

Someone knows.

What if he finds out I don’t see him as just a friend?

Fear wasn’t loud.

It was suffocating.

Jenny followed him quickly.

She tried to calm him down, her voice softer now.

“It’s okay… I told him. He’s my boyfriend. I just told him.”

Taehyung couldn’t hold it in anymore.

Tears almost came.

Not because of anger.

Because of exposure.

Because something private suddenly felt too visible.

Later, they went back to class together.

And Eunwoo made a promise.

Simple.

No one would know.

And surprisingly, he kept it.

After that day, everything returned to normal on the surface.

No teasing. No name calling. No awkward moments.

Life acted like nothing had happened.

But inside Taehyung—

nothing was normal anymore.

His feelings didn’t stop.

They didn’t slow down.

They only grew.

Quietly.

Deeper.

Heavier.

Something he had never felt before.

And something he still didn’t know how to control.
