Event: The Miller's Charity Party
Venue: The Geraldine's Hotels
Her silky laughter died out and she turned to me, “We've been talking and laughing for a while…” She mused, glassy blue eyes, almost translucent, gazed up at me. Her eyes were beautiful, they had me ensnared.
They were framed by long, artificial lashes and rested beneath elegantly carved brows. She had a small pointed nose and pink pouty lips, the bottom one a little fuller than the top. I wanted to sink my teeth into them.
Lila Rose. I mulled the name over and over in my head, my tongue almost tasting it. Maybe it was the drugs, but her features were attractive to me. Pale, smooth skin teased me from the exposed parts of her gown.
It was blue, with a sweetheart neckline and thin straps, the gown cinched at the waist and flared out to the top of her knees, accentuating her curves.
Slender legs stretched out on the floor, crossed at the ankles.
“So…” She drawled. “How did *you* end up drugged, and here?”
“If I told you I have no idea how I got drugged, you wouldn't believe it.” I couldn't believe it either.
One moment, I was sharing a toast with my parents and the Crane's, the next moment I was staggering my way to the hotel lobby, hellbent on booking a suite to lay my head.
My parents and I accepted the invite to this event for the sole purpose of making new business partners. In a business like ours, we needed numbers.
Looking back, my parents also had other ideas, with how often they pulled me into conversations with the Crane's, especially their daughter, Priscilla Crane. Their matchmaking was not subtle.
“But do you have any suspects or any reason why someone would drug you?”
I shrugged in response. Lila Rose looked as innocent as the word ‘innocent’, but she was still a stranger. I could not possibly divulge such information, because maybe her innocent act could be a farce to play me.
Did I have suspects? Hell yes, a lot of them.
An event like this has a way of placing you in the midst of friends, partners and enemies. As for the latter, I had a lot of them, despite the fact I had not fully taken over the family business. Yet.
*I wonder how drastically those numbers would increase after I take over.*
The woozy feeling started a few minutes after that toast. So, my primary suspects were my parents and the Crane's. I would not put it past my parents, I loved them, but they could be quite unconventional.
‘Why?’ Was the million dollar question, since the drug was not meant to kill me or paralyse me. Instead, it seemed it was meant to make me a little disoriented.
I had realised that almost immediately.
She hummed. “What's your name?”
“I'm Elijah” The corner of my lips pulled up into a small smile at the pout on her face.
Meeting someone that did not already know me, was surprisingly a breath of fresh air and I wanted to bask in it.
She squinted her eyes at me, “You do look familiar though. Come on, tell me your important name.”
I laughed at that, my eyes crinkling with mirth and she gave a toothed smile, cheeks dipping to reveal dimples.
The more we talked and laughed, the more I realised we were both victims of circumstance, albeit, different circumstances.
My chest expanded on a deep inhale, my nose greedily taking in her floral and fruity scent, my mind reeling.
Earlier, when I heard the front door slam shut, I thought it was whoever that drugged me. I thought they were coming to finish me off, inwardly careening at the fact that I was coherent, despite the blurry and woozy feeling.
But then, I was met with the laughing mess of a slender, petite thing who definitely had no idea who's suite she stumbled into.
And *fuck me* sideways, her red-rimmed eyes with translucent blue orbs, floored me. We were both drugged up, I observed, barely aware of the events that led us here but also having an inkling that it was intentional. At least for me.
Hell, I wanted to know who she came with. How she got in. Who she was. Despite the drugs still evident in our systems, it was hard to pry that information out of her.
Believe me, I tried.
“Oh, I know. Lord Elijah William-” She gave a sly grin. “The third.”
I snorted, chuckling at the three fingers— after two tries— she managed to hold up. She had been guessing my surname for a while now, each name more ridiculous than the last.
“Do I look like royalty?” I regretted the question immediately, because those eyes took their sweet time to trail up and down my body, leaving licks of heat in their wake.
“No” Her darkened gaze, filled with hunger and desire met mine. “You don't.”
Her pink tongue darted out of her mouth to lick the seams of her lips, before pearly white teeth bit down on the bottom one.
“Yea?” My voice was hoarse and I swallowed harshly, my eyes fixated on that lip tucked into her mouth.
She nodded.
My blood, hot and fierce, rushed through my veins, I could feel the roaring in my ears.
“Alright” I stood, stretching a hand towards her. “Time to sleep off the drugs in our systems.”
Soft, warm palms slipped into my calloused hands, and I pulled her up with a little too much force that brought her smack into my chest. My other hand shot out to wrap around her waist on reflex.
We stood in the makeshift embrace, the air crackled around us and whispers of burning wood from the enclosed fireplace seemed too loud.
I could hear, no, feel the rapid rise and fall of her breaths, some of which tickled the exposed skin of my chest. Looking down, I found her already staring at me, lips parted.
