Monster in the Dark

“The scariest thing about monsters is that sometimes they look human.”

Damien dragged Lena through the rain without explaining anything.

His grip around her wrist was tight.

Not painful—

but desperate.

People rushed around the accident scene behind them while police sirens echoed through the streets. The storm had become violent now, thunder roaring above the city like war drums.

“Damien, slow down!”

He ignored her.

The black SUV stayed parked across the street.

Waiting.

Watching.

Lena looked back once and saw the man in the dark coat still standing there.

Smiling.

Something about him made her stomach twist violently.

Not because he looked threatening.

Because he looked calm.

Like whatever terrified Damien…

didn’t scare him at all.

Damien suddenly pulled her into a narrow alley between buildings. Rainwater dripped from fire escapes overhead while neon signs flickered weakly above them.

Only then did he finally let go of her wrist.

His breathing sounded uneven.

Panicked.

Lena had never seen him like this before.

“Damien—”

“You need to go home.”

“What is happening?”

“I said go home.”

Anger flashed through her immediately.

“No.”

Damien looked at her sharply.

“No?”

“You don’t get to drag me through the city like a criminal and then say nothing!”

Rain soaked both of them completely now.

Damien ran a trembling hand through his wet hair.

“You shouldn’t have been there tonight.”

“Well I WAS.”

Silence.

Thunder cracked loudly overhead.

Lena stepped closer carefully.

“Who was that man?”

Damien’s jaw tightened instantly.

“Nobody.”

“Damien.”

“He’s part of my past.”

“That doesn’t answer anything.”

“It’s the only answer you’re getting.”

Frustration burned inside her chest.

Every time things became real—

Damien hid behind silence again.

“You kissed me,” she whispered angrily. “Then five minutes later you act like I’m in danger just for standing next to you!”

“Because you ARE.”

His voice echoed sharply through the alley.

Lena froze.

The look in Damien’s eyes terrified her more than yelling ever could.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

“You don’t understand what kind of people know me,” he muttered.

“Then explain it!”

Damien looked away immediately.

Like even talking about it hurt.

Finally—

“My father owes dangerous people money.”

Lena stayed silent.

“He used to work for them.”

“Work doing what?”

Damien laughed bitterly.

“You really don’t wanna know.”

A chill slid down her spine.

The rain suddenly felt colder.

“When he went to prison,” Damien continued quietly, “those people didn’t disappear.”

“And the man tonight?”

“He used to come to our house.”

Something about the way he said house sounded wrong.

Like he meant battlefield.

Lena swallowed carefully.

“What does he want now?”

Damien finally looked at her again.

“You.”

Her heart stopped.

“What?”

“They know about you.”

Fear crawled slowly through her chest.

“How?”

“I made the mistake of caring about you publicly.”

The words hit harder than they should’ve.

Caring about you.

Damien stepped closer suddenly.

His expression looked tortured now.

“Listen to me carefully, Lena.” His voice lowered dangerously. “If you see that man again, you leave immediately.”

“Damien—”

“I’m serious.”

“Why would they care about me?”

“Because people like them use fear.”

Silence.

“And hurting the people I care about…” Damien’s jaw clenched violently. “That’s how they control you.”

Lena stared at him.

For the first time since meeting Damien—

she finally saw the full darkness surrounding him.

Not rumors.

Not high school drama.

Real darkness.

The kind that followed people home.

“You should stay away from me now,” Damien whispered.

But this time…

he sounded like he was begging her not to.

Lena barely slept that night.

Every shadow in her bedroom suddenly felt wrong.

Every sound outside made her heart jump.

And Damien’s words repeated endlessly inside her head.

They know about you.

At 3:17 AM her phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

Her pulse quickened instantly.

Slowly, she opened the message.

UNKNOWN:

Pretty girl.

Her stomach dropped.

Another message arrived immediately.

You should be careful around damaged boys.

Lena’s hands trembled.

A third message came.

Some monsters bite.

Fear wrapped around her throat violently.

She typed quickly.

WHO IS THIS?

No response.

Instead—

a photo appeared.

Lena’s blood turned cold instantly.

It was her.

Standing outside the café earlier tonight.

Taken from across the street.

Before she could breathe properly—

her phone rang.

Damien.

She answered immediately.

“Damien—”

“Don’t reply to the number.”

His voice sounded deadly calm.

Which somehow scared her more.

“How did you know?”

“Because they sent it to me too.”

Lena sat upright in bed.

“What do they want?”

Silence.

Then quietly—

“To remind me they can reach you.”

Fear settled heavily inside her chest.

“Damien…”

“You need to block the number.”

“What about you?”

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“I’m used to this.”

That sentence hurt.

Because nobody should ever sound used to fear.

Lena hesitated before speaking softly.

“Are you okay?”

The silence on the other end became painfully long.

Finally—

“No.”

Her chest tightened.

It was the first time Damien openly admitted weakness.

No sarcasm.

No walls.

Just honesty.

And somehow that honesty made her care about him even more.

“I’m scared,” she whispered.

Damien exhaled shakily.

“I know.”

Then quieter—

“I’m sorry I dragged you into my mess.”

Lena closed her eyes.

But the terrifying part?

Even now…

she didn’t want to leave him.

Monday morning felt strange.

Lena walked through school hallways hyperaware of everyone around her.

Every unknown face made her nervous.

Every black SUV made her stomach twist.

She hated it.

She hated feeling afraid.

Ava noticed immediately.

“What happened to you?”

Lena forced a smile.

“Nothing.”

“That’s the fakest smile I’ve ever seen.”

Before Lena could answer—

the hallway suddenly quieted again.

Damien entered school wearing all black like usual, but today his expression looked colder than ever.

Students moved aside immediately.

Even teachers watched him carefully.

He spotted Lena instantly.

Then walked toward her.

The closer he got, the more tension spread through the hallway.

Ava looked ready to pass away dramatically.

“Oh my God.”

Damien stopped directly in front of Lena.

“You okay?”

Straight to the point.

No greeting.

No pretending.

Just concern.

Lena nodded slightly.

“I blocked the number.”

“Good.”

He looked exhausted.

Dark circles shadowed beneath his eyes.

Like he hadn’t slept at all.

“You look terrible,” she whispered softly.

A tiny smirk tugged at his lips.

“You’re sweet.”

“You need therapy.”

“Probably.”

Ava stared between them like she was witnessing a live drama series.

Then suddenly Tyler Morgan walked past nearby and laughed loudly.

“Aw, look. The psycho found a girlfriend.”

Damien’s expression darkened immediately.

Lena grabbed his sleeve before he could react.

“Don’t.”

For a second Damien stayed perfectly still beneath her touch.

Then slowly—

he relaxed.

Tyler noticed.

And looked shocked.

Because apparently Lena was the only person capable of calming Damien down.

That realization terrified Damien more than anyone else.

Later that afternoon, Lena found a folded piece of paper inside her locker.

No name.

No writing outside.

Her heartbeat quickened immediately.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was one sentence written in messy black ink.

You can’t save broken people.

Fear hit her instantly.

She spun around quickly.

Nothing.

Just crowded hallways and laughing students.

But someone had placed this here.

Someone watching her.

Her hands trembled slightly.

“Lena?”

She nearly jumped.

Damien stood behind her.

His eyes immediately noticed the paper.

The second he read it—

his entire expression changed.

Cold.

Dangerous.

“Who gave you this?”

“I don’t know.”

Damien grabbed the note tightly.

His jaw clenched violently.

For the first time—

Lena saw genuine rage in him.

Not emotional anger.

Protective anger.

The kind that becomes violent fast.

“Damien…”

“I told them to leave you alone.”

Fear slid down her spine.

“Them?”

He looked at her sharply.

Then suddenly crumpled the note in his fist.

“Go home after school.”

“What?”

“Immediately.”

“Damien—”

“Please.”

That word again.

Please.

He only said it when he was desperate.

Lena swallowed carefully.

“Okay.”

But Damien still looked uneasy.

Like something bad was coming.

School ended beneath heavy rain.

Dark clouds swallowed the sky while students rushed toward buses and cars.

Lena walked quickly toward the front gate, hoodie pulled over her head.

Then suddenly—

a black SUV stopped across the street.

Her blood turned cold.

Same vehicle.

Same tinted windows.

The passenger door slowly opened.

And the man from the café stepped out.

Tall.

Calm.

Terrifying.

He smiled after spotting her.

Lena’s entire body froze.

“Lena Carter,” he called smoothly.

Her heartbeat pounded violently.

Run.

Damien told her to run.

But fear rooted her in place.

The man approached slowly through the rain.

“You’re prettier up close.”

Every survival instinct inside her screamed.

“Stay away from me.”

He laughed softly.

“You know, Damien gets very violent when people touch things he cares about.”

Lena stepped backward immediately.

“What do you want?”

The man tilted his head slightly.

“To meet the girl ruining his self-control.”

Chills spread across her skin.

Before she could move again—

someone slammed into the man violently from the side.

Damien.

The impact sent both of them crashing against a parked car.

Students screamed nearby.

Damien punched him hard.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Pure rage exploded from him.

“DON’T TALK TO HER!”

The man only laughed while blood dripped from his mouth.

“There he is.”

Damien grabbed his collar violently.

“I warned you.”

“And yet here I am.”

The man’s smile widened dangerously.

“You’re getting attached again, kid.”

Damien looked genuinely murderous now.

Lena had never seen him this far gone before.

Teachers shouted nearby.

Students recorded videos.

Chaos erupted everywhere.

But Damien only cared about one thing.

Protecting her.

The man looked past Damien directly at Lena.

“You should ask him what happened to the last girl.”

Everything stopped.

Damien froze instantly.

The rain suddenly sounded deafening.

Lena’s heartbeat stumbled painfully.

“What?”

The man smiled cruelly.

“Oh… he didn’t tell you?”

“Shut up,” Damien whispered.

The man ignored him.

“Her name was Claire.”

Lena felt sick immediately.

“She loved Damien too.”

“STOP TALKING.”

“But then she disappeared.”

Silence crashed violently around them.

Lena stared at Damien in horror.

The look on his face—

guilt.

Pure guilt.

The man laughed darkly.

“That’s the problem with loving broken boys.” He looked directly at Lena. “Girls around them tend to get hurt.”

Damien punched him again hard enough to split his lip.

Teachers finally dragged Damien backward while police sirens echoed nearby.

The man stood calmly despite the blood.

Still smiling.

Still watching Lena.

Then before entering the SUV—

he said one final thing.

“Ask Damien how Claire died.”

And drove away.

Leaving silence behind.

Damien looked destroyed.

Not angry anymore.

Terrified.

Ashamed.

Lena’s chest tightened painfully.

Because suddenly—

she realized Damien had been hiding something far worse than violence.
