Chapter 4: The Whispering Maze
The heavy iron door of the emergency staircase slammed shut behind them, locking itself with a loud, rusty click. The sound echoed heavily in the enclosed space, and a chilling realization hit them—there was no going back to Classroom 4-B anymore.
Se-yeon, Ji-woo, and Hana stood completely frozen at the top of the concrete stairs, their eyes fixed on the text message flickering on Hana's screen.
'Don't trust either of them. I never made it into the blackboard door.'
If the real Min-ah was still trapped inside the classroom, then who—or what—were the two identical girls standing at the bottom of the stairs?
Before Se-yeon could even process the horror, the flashlight on Hana's phone flickered wildly three times and died completely. The staircase plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
"Hana! Turn it back on right now!" Ji-woo shouted, her voice echoing off the narrow concrete walls.
"I-I'm trying! The battery is completely drained!" Hana cried out, her fingers tapping furiously against the dead screen.
In the pitch black, a low, collective whisper began to echo from the bottom of the steps. It didn't sound like Min-ah anymore. It was a distorted, overlapping chorus of voices, shifting from Hana’s tone, to Ji-woo’s, and finally settling into Se-yeon’s own voice.
"You broke Rule #4," the darkness whispered creepily. "You left someone behind."
Suddenly, a cold, slimy hand brushed against Se-yeon’s ankle. She shrieked loudly, kicking blindly into the dark. "Run! Down the stairs, now!"
The three girls scrambled down the steps in the dark, their hands scraping against the rough walls. They couldn't see if they were running toward the real Min-ah or straight into the jaws of the Mok-so-ri. They just ran as fast as their legs could carry them.
The narrow staircase didn't seem to end. It felt like a giant maze, twisting and turning deeper into the bowels of the school basement. The air grew thicker, smelling heavily of chemical fluids and rotten river water.
"Look! A light ahead!" Ji-woo panted, pointing down the corridor.
A faint, eerie green glow was emitting from under a frosted glass door at the very end of the hallway. Above the door, a rusted metal sign read: BIOLOGY LAB.
Se-yeon lunged forward and grabbed the brass doorknob. To her surprise, it turned easily. She threw the door open, and the three girls burst into the room, slamming it shut behind them. Ji-woo immediately grabbed a long metal pipe from a nearby broken desk and jammed it into the door frame to lock it tightly.
The biology lab was filled with tall glass jars containing preserved specimens, dusty human skeletons, and rows of heavy wooden lab tables. The green glow came from an old, flickering emergency light on the wall.
"Where is Min-ah?" Hana gasped, looking around the creepy room.
"I'm here," a weak voice whispered from beneath the teacher's main demonstration desk.
A figure slowly crawled out into the green light. It was Min-ah. Her uniform was torn, and her hands were bleeding, matching the exact description from Se-yeon's final memories.
"Min-ah!" Hana rushed forward to hug her, but Se-yeon immediately caught Hana's arm, pulling her back with full force.
Se-yeon's eyes were fixed on the dusty floor near the entrance. There were wet, gray footprints leading from the door they had just secured, straight toward the teacher's desk.
Before anyone could speak, the old green emergency light on the wall gave a loud pop and died. The lab went completely dark.
In the silence, Hana’s dead phone suddenly vibrated in her pocket. It shouldn't have had any battery left.
With shaking hands, Hana pulled it out. The screen lit up with a blinding, blood-red glare, revealing a single, terrifying notification from the unknown number:
'Phase 3 Initiated: The Mok-so-ri is already in the room with you. Guess who.'
