Episode 5: Movie Night

The rain started just after sunset.

Heavy rain.

The kind of rain that made the city look blurry through the apartment windows.

Olivia sat comfortably on the couch with a book in her hands.

Perfect.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Exactly how she liked her evenings.

Then Ethan appeared.

Which immediately ruined the peaceful part.

He was carrying a giant bowl of popcorn.

And a blanket.

And somehow a bag of chips.

"What's all that?" Olivia asked.

Ethan looked offended.

"It's called preparation."

"For what?"

"Movie night."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Olivia."

"What?"

"You've spent the last three hours reading."

"And?"

"You need entertainment."

"I'm already entertained."

"By a book."

"Exactly."

Ethan sighed dramatically.

"You worry me."

Five minutes later...

Olivia somehow found herself sitting on the couch beside him.

She still wasn't sure how that happened.

Probably manipulation.

Definitely manipulation.

Ethan smiled proudly.

"I win."

"You didn't win."

"I absolutely won."

"You annoyed me until I gave up."

"That's still winning."

Olivia rolled her eyes.

The movie started.

For the first twenty minutes, everything was normal.

Then Ethan began talking.

Constantly.

"That guy is suspicious."

"Ethan."

"What?"

"Watch the movie."

Three minutes later—

"He's definitely the villain."

"Ethan."

"What?"

"Stop talking."

Five minutes later—

"I knew it!"

Olivia threw a pillow at him.

The pillow hit his face.

Ethan stared.

Then started laughing.

Unfortunately...

Olivia laughed too.

Halfway through the movie, thunder exploded outside.

BOOM!

The apartment windows shook.

A second later, the lights went out.

Everything became dark.

Completely dark.

Silence filled the apartment.

Then came another loud crack of thunder.

Olivia jumped.

A little.

Not much.

Definitely not enough for anyone to notice.

Unfortunately...

Ethan noticed.

"Were you scared?"

"No."

"You jumped."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

"It was a strategic movement."

Ethan laughed.

"Strategic?"

"Yes."

"Against thunder?"

"Exactly."

The electricity still hadn't returned.

The only light came from the city outside.

For a while, neither spoke.

The atmosphere felt strangely calm.

Comfortable.

Different.

Eventually Ethan broke the silence.

"Can I ask you something?"

Olivia looked at him.

"What?"

"Why are you always trying to be perfect?"

The question surprised her.

Nobody usually asked things like that.

Most people simply accepted it.

Or complained about it.

She looked down.

"I don't know."

"That's a lie."

Olivia sighed.

Maybe it was.

For several moments she remained quiet.

Then finally spoke.

"When I was younger..."

She stopped.

The words felt strange.

Like something she hadn't shared in years.

Ethan didn't interrupt.

He simply waited.

"My father always expected perfection."

Her voice was soft now.

"If I got ninety-nine percent, he asked where the other one percent went."

Ethan listened carefully.

"No matter what I did, it never felt enough."

The room fell silent.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.

"So now you try to control everything?" Ethan asked.

Olivia nodded.

"Maybe."

For the first time since they met...

Ethan wasn't smiling.

Wasn't joking.

Wasn't teasing her.

He looked genuinely sad.

"That sounds exhausting."

Olivia laughed quietly.

"It is."

The honesty surprised both of them.

Then Ethan leaned back against the couch.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

"What?"

"I wasn't joking when I said I don't plan anything."

Olivia raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Why?"

Ethan stared at the ceiling.

For a moment, his usual confidence disappeared.

"My mom used to plan everything."

Olivia blinked.

"What happened?"

A small smile appeared on his face.

A sad smile.

"She got sick."

The answer was simple.

But somehow...

It carried a lot of weight.

"After that, I stopped making plans."

Olivia didn't know what to say.

So she simply sat there.

Listening.

"Because every plan I made fell apart anyway."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like someone who had already accepted it.

The silence between them returned.

But this time...

It wasn't awkward.

It wasn't uncomfortable.

It felt understanding.

For the first time, Olivia realized something important.

Ethan wasn't careless because he didn't care.

He was careless because caring had hurt him before.

And Ethan realized something too.

Olivia wasn't controlling because she wanted to be difficult.

She was afraid.

Just like him.

The electricity suddenly returned.

The lights flashed back on.

The movie resumed.

The moment disappeared.

But neither moved.

Neither looked away.

Then Ethan smiled.

His normal smile.

The annoying one.

The dangerous one.

"So..."

Olivia narrowed her eyes.

"What?"

"Are we having an emotional friendship arc?"

Olivia immediately threw another pillow at him.

The pillow hit him directly in the face.

Again.

Ethan laughed so hard he nearly fell off the couch.

"There he is."

"There who is?"

"The annoying Ethan."

"Oh good."

He placed a hand over his heart.

"For a second I thought you liked me."

Olivia grabbed a third pillow.

Ethan raised both hands.

"Okay! Okay!"

She couldn't stop smiling.

And somehow...

That scared her more than the conversation they had just shared.

Because the apartment no longer felt like a place she happened to live.

It felt like home.

And Ethan...

Well.

Ethan was starting to feel less like a stranger.

To be continued...
