Chapter 4

One Chance Encounter

Chapter 4: Lines They Shouldn’t Cross

Emily told herself she would keep things strictly professional from now on.

No unnecessary conversations.

No lingering eye contact.

No thinking about him outside work.

It lasted exactly three hours.

By mid-morning, Ethan had already requested a one-on-one session with her to “clarify editorial timelines.”

Emily stared at the meeting request on her screen.

Of course.

She stood up, grabbed her notebook, and walked toward the conference room like she was heading into battle.

Ethan was already inside.

Waiting.

As usual.

“On time,” he said as she entered.

“I was supposed to be,” she replied.

A faint smile crossed his face. “That sounded personal.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Mm.”

Emily sat across from him, placing her notebook on the table with more force than necessary.

“Let’s make this quick,” she said. “I have work.”

Ethan leaned forward slightly. “This is work.”

She ignored the way his voice softened when he said it.

“Start talking.”

Too Close, Too Quiet

The meeting began normally—deadlines, schedules, publishing adjustments.

But something was different.

The room felt smaller than yesterday.

Or maybe it was just him.

Ethan wasn’t just looking at documents anymore.

He was watching her reactions.

Every time she spoke.

Every time she paused.

Every time she avoided looking at him.

“You’re tense,” he said suddenly.

Emily didn’t look up. “I’m focused.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She sighed. “Why do you care?”

A pause.

That question landed differently than she expected.

Ethan leaned back in his chair slowly.

“I don’t,” he said at first.

Then he corrected himself. “I shouldn’t.”

That made her look up.

Their eyes met.

And stayed there a second too long.

Emily felt it again—that pull she didn’t fully understand but couldn’t ignore.

So she broke it.

“We should finish this,” she said quickly.

Ethan nodded once. “Right.”

But neither of them returned to the documents immediately.

The Coffee Run That Shouldn’t Have Happened

Later that afternoon, Emily went downstairs to grab coffee just to clear her head.

She needed space.

She needed distance.

She needed—

“Black coffee?”

Emily nearly dropped her cup.

Ethan stood beside her in the café line.

Of course he did.

She turned slowly. “Do you follow me now?”

“I ordered coffee,” he said calmly.

“There are five other cafés in this building.”

“And yet we’re both here.”

Emily stared at him.

Then shook her head. “This is not normal.”

Ethan took a step closer in line. “What part?”

“The part where you appear everywhere I go.”

“That’s a coincidence.”

She raised an eyebrow.

Ethan added quietly, “Mostly.”

That made her pause.

“Mostly?” she repeated.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at her for a long moment.

Then simply said, “Forget it.”

But she didn’t.

The Almost Confession

They walked back to the office together without planning to.

Side by side.

Too close for strangers.

Too familiar for coworkers.

Halfway through the hallway, Emily stopped.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

Something in her expression must have changed because his did too.

“What is this?” she asked softly.

He didn’t pretend not to understand.

But he still hesitated.

“I don’t know,” he said honestly.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have right now.”

Emily studied him.

Really studied him.

The calm exterior. The controlled voice. The way he always seemed careful with what he said—but even more careful with what he didn’t.

“You’re hiding something,” she said quietly.

A long silence followed.

Ethan didn’t deny it.

Instead, he asked, “Would it change how you see me if I was?”

Emily’s heartbeat slowed.

“That depends,” she said.

“On what?”

“On what you’re hiding.”

That answer hung between them.

Heavy.

Unfinished.

Then Ethan stepped back slightly.

Not away from her.

But away from the moment.

“Back to work,” he said.

And just like that, he closed the door on something that had almost opened.

But Emily could feel it now.

Whatever this was—

It wasn’t just coincidence anymore.

And it wasn’t going away.
