Chapter 4: The Betrayal and the Stand for Truth

Two years had passed since that harrowing incident at the hospital. I had become remarkably cautious, almost hyper-vigilant. My life settled into a rigid, predictable cycle: studying for hours, then shifting my entire focus to watching over Gabe. Every single night, I diligently checked his vitals, ensured he took his medication on time, and meticulously removed any potential stressors that could trigger another cardiac episode. I became a ghost in his life—a shadow living through his silence—content to be the person who guarded his heartbeat, even as my own heart felt like it was slowly depleting from the effort of maintaining a facade.

But the world outside of our protected friendship was not as peaceful as the sheltered days I spent by his side.

The breaking point arrived when I simply could not fulfill the latest financial demand Mama imposed on me. I had absolutely no money left to give. The moments that followed that refusal felt like a descent into a waking nightmare. My mother—the woman who should have been my primary source of security and sanctuary—had become a destructive force. She was manipulative, verbally and physically abusive, and an absolute expert at wearing a mask as a victim. It was infuriating to realize that even the people around us tended to believe her tearful fabrications over my desperate truths. The most agonizing part of her campaign was how she relentlessly blamed me for Papa leaving our lives, willfully ignoring the truth: it was her own toxic vices and reckless choices that had pushed us all over the cliff.

One sweltering afternoon, she caught me off guard. She raided my small apartment with a ferocity that stunned me. She didn’t bother to enter like a guest; she grabbed a fistful of my hair and dragged me across the wooden floor while she screamed and rummaged through my belongings, tearing apart the sanctuary I had worked so hard to build. When she finally unearthed the entire contents of my wallet—the hard-earned money I had painstakingly saved for my tuition fees and food—she left me there, physically broken and sobbing. I had tried to report her to the DSWD in the past, but it was an exercise in futility. Her social connections were far too strong, and my cries for help felt utterly meaningless in the face of her influence.

I didn't tell Gabe. I knew I couldn't add the crushing weight of this domestic misery to his already fragile health. Instead, I became a master of concealment. I bought thick, full-coverage concealer to hide the dark, jagged bruises on my arms and neck. Every time I met him, I forced a bright, convincing smile, exerting every ounce of my willpower to project that everything was perfect.

"Yvonne, why do you look so exhausted lately?" he asked one day while we were quietly reading in the library.

I offered him a smile that required an immense amount of inner strength to maintain. "Just studying hard, Gabe. You know how it is. I dream of graduating as soon as possible so I can help my family."

He didn’t realize that the exhaustion wasn’t just from the textbooks, but from the weight of the secrets I carried.
