Chapter 4: The sketch behind the smile

The classroom door slowly opened.

Aiko’s heart pounded so loudly she could hear it in her ears.

The mysterious sketch trembled slightly in her hands.

For a moment, countless possibilities raced through her mind.

Was it Haruto?

Had he drawn it?

If so, why had he hidden it?

And why had everyone been acting so strange all week?

The door slid fully open.

Aiko froze.

“Haruto…”

Standing in the doorway, slightly out of breath, was Haruto Sato.

Sunlight from the hallway spilled into the room behind him.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Haruto’s eyes immediately landed on the sketch.

His expression changed.

A mixture of surprise.

Embarrassment.

And defeat.

Aiko stared at him.

Then at the drawing.

Then back at him again.

“You drew this?”

Haruto rubbed the back of his neck.

The familiar gesture told her everything.

“…Yeah.”

Aiko blinked.

“You can draw?”

“Not very well.”

She looked down at the portrait.

It was beautiful.

Every detail felt carefully observed.

Every line was filled with affection.

“You call this not very well?”

Haruto looked away.

His ears were turning red.

Which only confirmed her suspicion.

He was embarrassed.

Very embarrassed.

And somehow that made the situation even cuter.

Aiko couldn’t stop smiling.

The sight made Haruto groan.

“Please don’t laugh.”

“I’m not laughing.”

“You absolutely are.”

“A little.”

His shoulders slumped dramatically.

Aiko finally stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Haruto hesitated.

Then sighed.

“Because it was supposed to be a surprise.”

“A surprise?”

Before he could answer, multiple voices suddenly echoed from the hallway.

“Aiko!”

“Haruto!”

The next second, Yuna, Ren, and several classmates burst into the room.

The moment they saw the sketch in Aiko’s hands, everyone froze.

Yuna covered her face.

“Oh no.”

Ren pinched the bridge of his nose.

“We’re too late.”

Aiko looked around.

“What is happening?”

The room became silent.

Everyone exchanged glances.

Eventually Yuna pointed dramatically at Haruto.

“He ruined the surprise.”

“I did not.”

“You got caught.”

“That’s different.”

“It’s literally the same thing.”

Aiko crossed her arms.

“Someone explain.”

Yuna immediately grabbed her shoulders.

“Okay. Don’t be mad.”

“Why would I be mad?”

“Because we’ve been hiding something from you.”

Aiko narrowed her eyes.

That wasn’t exactly reassuring.

Haruto sighed.

“I’ll tell her.”

Everyone stepped aside.

Haruto looked nervous.

Which was unusual.

Very unusual.

That alone made Aiko pay closer attention.

Finally he spoke.

“Remember when your artwork got damaged?”

She nodded.

“I thought you were going to give up.”

Aiko looked surprised.

“What?”

“You worked so hard for the festival.”

His voice softened.

“And I hated seeing you doubt yourself.”

The room fell quiet.

Haruto continued.

“So I wanted to do something.”

Aiko’s heartbeat began to quicken.

“What kind of something?”

Yuna grinned.

“The biggest surprise ever.”

Haruto shot her a warning look.

She immediately pretended innocence.

Aiko turned back toward him.

Haruto took a deep breath.

“The sketch was part of it.”

“Part of it?”

He nodded.

Then Ren stepped forward.

“Actually…”

He pointed toward the hallway.

“You should probably see the rest.”

Aiko blinked.

“The rest?”

Everyone suddenly started smiling.

That mysterious smile.

The same one they’d been hiding all week.

Her curiosity exploded.

“What rest?”

Yuna grabbed her wrist.

“Come with us.”

Before Aiko could protest, she was pulled into the hallway.

The school festival was still in full swing.

Students wandered between attractions.

Music echoed across campus.

Laughter filled the air.

Yet as Aiko followed her friends, she noticed something strange.

They weren’t heading toward any festival booth.

They were heading toward the old art building.

A building rarely used during events.

Confusion settled deeper.

“What are we doing here?”

No one answered.

Yuna simply smiled.

That smile was becoming suspicious.

Very suspicious.

The group stopped outside a closed classroom.

Aiko looked at Haruto.

His nervousness had returned.

Actually, it seemed worse now.

His hands were shoved into his pockets.

His eyes avoided hers.

Which only increased her curiosity.

Yuna dramatically cleared her throat.

“Ready?”

“No.”

“Too bad.”

Before Aiko could stop her, Yuna opened the door.

Aiko stepped inside.

And completely froze.

The room was covered in artwork.

Her artwork.

Sketches.

Paintings.

Character designs.

Storyboards.

Illustrations she had created over the past two years.

Every wall displayed something she had drawn.

The room looked like a miniature gallery.

Aiko couldn’t speak.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Slowly she walked forward.

Looking around in disbelief.

Some drawings were old.

Others were recent.

Many were pieces she thought nobody remembered.

Yet somehow they were all here.

Displayed carefully.

Beautifully.

With handwritten notes beneath them.

Messages from classmates.

Friends.

People she had inspired without realizing it.

Aiko felt tears sting her eyes.

“What…”

Her voice barely emerged.

“What is this?”

Haruto finally stepped beside her.

“It’s your exhibition.”

Aiko turned toward him.

“My what?”

“Your exhibition.”

His smile was nervous.

But sincere.

“You’ve spent years drawing stories that make people smile.”

The room remained silent.

Everyone listening.

Everyone watching.

Haruto continued.

“You always support everyone else.”

His gaze softened.

“So we wanted to support you too.”

Aiko stared at him.

Unable to process the words.

This entire room.

This entire surprise.

Had been for her.

The damaged artwork.

The secret meetings.

The whispers.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Yuna wiped her eyes dramatically.

“I’m emotional.”

Ren sighed.

“You cry at everything.”

“I have feelings.”

“You cried over a sandwich last week.”

“It was a beautiful sandwich.”

Nobody paid attention to them.

Not even a little.

Because Aiko was still staring at the exhibition.

Still trying to believe it was real.

Then she noticed something else.

Near the center of the room stood a large framed illustration.

The portrait.

The one signed with H.

Haruto’s drawing.

Placed at the very center.

Aiko’s chest tightened.

“You really drew that?”

Haruto looked embarrassed again.

“Yeah.”

“It’s amazing.”

“No, it’s not.”

“It is.”

“No.”

“It is.”

“No.”

“It is.”

Haruto laughed.

The tension finally disappeared.

And somehow that made the moment even more emotional.

Without warning, Aiko threw her arms around him.

The room erupted.

Yuna screamed.

Several classmates cheered.

Ren looked exhausted.

Haruto nearly lost his balance.

But after a second, he gently hugged her back.

Aiko buried her face against his shoulder.

“Thank you.”

The words came out quietly.

Yet everyone heard them.

Haruto smiled.

“You deserve it.”

The exhibition quickly became one of the festival’s most popular attractions.

Students stopped by constantly.

Visitors admired the artwork.

Teachers praised her creativity.

Several younger students even asked for drawing advice.

For the first time, Aiko truly realized how many people appreciated her work.

Not because it was perfect.

But because it made them happy.

The realization stayed with her all afternoon.

By sunset, the festival was beginning to wind down.

Most visitors had left.

The campus felt calmer.

Quieter.

Aiko eventually escaped the crowd and wandered toward the rooftop.

The place had become special.

A place filled with memories.

As expected, Haruto was already there.

Leaning against the fence.

Watching the sunset.

Orange light painted the sky.

Cherry-colored clouds drifted across the horizon.

Aiko smiled.

“Found you.”

Haruto turned.

“There you are.”

She joined him at the railing.

For a while they simply admired the view.

The comfortable silence returned.

One she had grown to love.

Eventually Aiko spoke.

“You know…”

“Hm?”

“I almost thought you were hiding something bad.”

Haruto laughed.

“I know.”

“You were acting suspicious.”

“You weren’t supposed to find out.”

“I found out.”

“Unfortunately.”

Aiko nudged his shoulder.

Haruto smiled.

Then his expression softened.

“Aiko.”

The way he said her name made her heart skip.

She turned toward him.

“Yeah?”

For a second, he seemed unusually serious.

Almost nervous.

The sight surprised her.

“What is it?”

Haruto looked toward the sunset.

Then back at her.

“There was another reason I made that sketch.”

Aiko blinked.

“What reason?”

His gaze met hers.

Steady.

Warm.

Honest.

The evening breeze moved through their hair.

Neither looked away.

“I wanted to draw the person who’s become the most important part of my life.”

Aiko’s breath caught.

The world seemed to stop.

The sky.

The wind.

The sounds below.

Everything faded.

Leaving only his words.

And the look in his eyes.

A blush spread across her cheeks instantly.

Haruto smiled.

A rare smile.

A vulnerable one.

One meant only for her.

“Aiko…”

Before he could continue, the rooftop door suddenly burst open.

“THERE YOU ARE!”

Yuna’s voice echoed across the rooftop.

Both of them jumped.

The romantic atmosphere shattered instantly.

Yuna rushed forward waving her phone.

Ren followed behind looking exhausted.

Again.

“What happened?” Aiko asked.

Yuna looked unusually excited.

“No way.”

Her eyes sparkled.

“No actual way.”

Aiko exchanged a glance with Haruto.

“What?”

Yuna thrust the phone toward them.

“Look.”

Aiko took it.

Then froze.

Haruto froze too.

Displayed on the screen was an announcement.

A national youth manga competition.

One of the largest in Japan.

And attached to the announcement was a list of finalists.

Aiko’s eyes widened.

Her heart stopped.

Because written near the top of the list—

Was her name.
