An Unspoken Devotion

The steady hum of the luxury sedan’s engine blended seamlessly with the soft rhythm of rain tapping against the windows, but it did nothing to quiet Cole Wyatt’s restless mind.

He sat reclined against the plush leather seat, head tilted slightly toward the rain-streaked glass. Outside, the city stretched into a blur of neon reflections—gold, crimson, and electric blue streaking across the rain-slicked streets like fractured light.

Yet none of it truly registered.

His gaze remained unfocused—distant, lost somewhere beyond the passing skyline.

Her face surfaced again.

Uninvited.

Unrelenting.

The memory of her trembling form lingered—fragile, unguarded, as though she had been barely holding herself together. It settled in his chest, heavier than it had any right to be.

That grief...

It hadn’t been ordinary.

It had been suffocating. Consuming. The kind that hollowed a person from the inside out.

In his world, people wore masks.

Emotions were curated.

Smiles were rehearsed. Words were calculated. Every interaction carried an agenda, every expression filtered through layers of control.

But her…

She was the complete opposite.

No restraint. No composure. No mask.

Just raw, devastating truth.

And for reasons he couldn’t quite understand, it unsettled him deeply.

What kind of pain drives someone to that point?

“Sir, we have arrived.”

The driver’s voice cut gently through his thoughts.

Cole blinked, his focus snapping back as the car slowed to a smooth halt. His silver-white hair shifted with the movement, brushing his cheek. He glanced outside, momentarily disoriented.

Towering iron gates. Already open.

Familiar stone pathways, slick with rain.

The soft glow of exterior lights against wet asphalt.

Home

“Oh,” he murmured faintly. “That was… fast.”

The driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Not particularly, sir. You were simply deep in thought.”

Cole’s pale eyes shifted toward him—calm, but sharp enough to carry a silent warning.

The driver stiffened instantly.

“…My apologies.”

Silence.

Cole stepped out without another word.

The rain had eased to a faint drizzle, cool against his skin. He adjusted the collar of his coat as he walked inside, his presence alone enough to make the vast space feel occupied.

The grand foyer welcomed him with quiet warmth.

Marble floors gleamed under soft lighting. The air smelled faintly of polished wood and something clean—comforting in its stillness.

But the silence didn’t last.

The moment he stepped into the living area, movement caught his attention.

Finn Grayson was pacing.

Back and forth, measured steps echoing faintly against the floor.

His usually composed figure was slightly undone—golden-brown hair tousled, sleeves rolled just enough to suggest restlessness, jaw tight with restrained tension.

The instant he saw Cole, he stopped.

“Where the hell have you been?”

The question came out sharper than intended, cutting cleanly through the quiet.

Cole, unfazed, slipped off his coat with unhurried ease, his movements smooth, controlled. Damp strands of his silver-white hair framed his face, accentuating the cool, almost ethereal sharpness of his features.

“Here and there.”

Finn’s eyes narrowed. “Here and there?” He stepped closer, frustration flashing across his face. “Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been?”

Cole exhaled softly, loosening his collar.

“Finn,” he said, his tone calm, almost indulgent, “I’m not a child.”

“That’s not the point!” Finn snapped, his composure cracking. “You’re my responsibility—whether you like it or not. You don’t just disappear without a word!”

There it was.

Not just frustration.

Concern.

Real, unfiltered concern.

Cole’s gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than usual.

Then—

“Alright,” he said quietly, lifting a hand in a calming gesture. “Lower your voice.”

His tone softened, just slightly.

“I’m fine. I ran into something unexpected on the road. That’s all.”

He stepped closer, raising his arms just enough.

“See? Completely intact.”

Finn hesitated.

Then, reluctantly, he looked.

Carefully scanning for any sign of injury, strain— anything out of place.

But there was nothing.

Unharmed. Perfect, as always.

The tension in his shoulders eased.

“…You’re fine,” he muttered, more to himself than anything else.

A breath left him, slow and heavy.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have raised my voice,” he said quietly, his gaze dropping.

Cole’s expression softened, the faintest hint of warmth appearing in his eyes.

“Don’t make that face.”

Before Finn could react, Cole reached out and lightly pinched his cheek.

A fleeting gesture.

Soft.

Unexpected.

“You’ll make me feel guilty.”

Finn blinked, caught off guard.

A faint flush crept up to the tips of his ears.

Then he swatted his hand away.

“Please behave like a proper adult,” he muttered, clearing his throat.

But the tension had already dissolved.

“The meeting for your endorsement deal with GOG Skincare had to be rescheduled,” Finn said, regaining his composure. “That’s because you went off the grid.”

Just like that, the air shifted again.

Cole’s expression cooled.

“I told you already,” he said, his voice lower now, more deliberate. “I have no intention of working with them. I don’t trust their products.”

Finn sighed, rubbing his temple. “Cole, it’s just an endorsement. You’re not obligated to actually use their products.”

Cole took a slow step forward.

Something in his gaze sharpened—darker now, more serious.

“You’re forgetting something important, Finn.”

His voice was quiet.

But it carried weight.

“The moment my name is attached to that brand, people will trust it. They’ll buy it because I endorsed it.”

A pause.

“They believe in me.”

“I won’t risk that,” Cole continued. “Not for money. Not for anything.”

Silence followed.

Heavy. Undeniable.

Finn froze.

The words hit harder than expected.

And just like that, his argument collapsed.

“…I see,” he said quietly.

A hint of regret flickered across his expression.

“I didn’t think about it that way. That was careless of me.”

Cole exhaled, the edge in his expression fading.

“It’s fine.”

Finn straightened slightly, resolve returning.

“Then I’ll look into them properly,” he said. “Manufacturing, ingredients, business practices—everything. By tomorrow, we’ll know exactly what we’re dealing with.”

Cole gave a small nod.

“Good.”

The exhaustion returned then, settling deeper this time. He pressed his fingers briefly to his temple.

“Let’s continue tomorrow.”

“Of course,” Finn said immediately, his tone softening.

“Go take a bath. I’ll make you something to eat.”

Cole paused.

A blush crept across his cheeks—subtle, but unmistakable.

“…Why are you still here?”

Finn blinked, then answered without hesitation.

“I’m staying.”

A simple statement. Firm. Unyielding.

“You’ve had a long day. Taking care of you is part of my job.”

Cole held his gaze for a moment.

Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

Then he turned abruptly.

“…Do whatever you want.”

But there was no irritation in his voice.

Only quiet acceptance.

Maybe even something softer.

Finn watched him go, eyes following until the bedroom door clicked shut.

The house went silent again.

And then—

His expression changed.

Softened completely.

A quiet promise settled in his chest.

As long as I'm by your side...

I'll always take care of you.

Without another word, he turned toward the kitchen.

Soon, the silence gave way to gentle sounds—the rhythmic chop of a knife, the low sizzle of heat, the comforting aroma of something warm filling the air.

Upstairs, Cole sank into a steaming bath.

Heat closed around him, slow and suffocating in the best way, sinking into every tense muscle. The quiet of the room settled over him, broken only by the soft ripple of water as he leaned back, closing his eyes.

For a moment—

He allowed himself to relax, to breathe.

But even then—

Even in the quiet—

She lingered.

That girl.

Like an unanswered question.

Or a story that had only just begun.
