Chapter 4: The Caught Secret

The sharp rustle of the dry leaves behind the thick banyan tree echoed in the damp morning air, freezing both Mona and Aman in their tracks. For a terrifying second, neither of them breathed. The golden morning fog suddenly felt thick and suffocating.

Mona’s hands gripped her black sketchpad so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her mind raced through the worst-case scenarios. If that was Professor Sharma, or worse, the coaching institute's strict director, her secret deal was over before it even began. Her dream of balancing her art with her preparation would shatter, and her parents would be notified immediately.

"Who's there?" Aman called out sharply. His usual casual, friendly voice vanished, replaced by a defensive, hard tone. He took a step in front of Mona, instinctively shielding her from whatever was hiding in the shadows. "Come out right now!"

For a moment, there was absolute silence. Only the distant sound of traffic from the main Patna roads could be heard. Then, the branches parted slowly.

A girl stepped out into the open, brushing dry twigs off her uniform skirt. She had a neatly tied ponytail and was carrying a premium leather backpack. A smug, victorious smile played on her lips as her sharp eyes locked onto Mona.

It was Shalini.

Shalini was the undisputed top ranker of the biology batch, known not just for her brilliant marks, but also for her intensely competitive and cold nature. She was the kind of student who viewed everyone else as a threat to her rank, and she had been eyeing Mona’s sudden closeness with Aman for a while.

"Well, well, well," Shalini said, crossing her arms over her chest. Her voice was dripping with sarcasm. "What a beautiful little drama going on behind the old library. The great physics topper, Aman, playing the hero, and Mona, the resident dreamer, hiding behind him."

Mona felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "Shalini... how long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough to hear everything," Shalini laughed, taking a slow step toward them. "I heard about the secret deal with Professor Sharma. I heard about how he’s keeping your illegal little drawing pad in his locker, and how he’s promised you special treatment on Saturdays if you magically score higher. And most importantly, I heard how Aman here is going to illegally leak his top-tier physics notes to help you cheat your way up the ranks."

"It's not cheating!" Aman snapped, his eyes flashing with anger. "I am just tutoring her after classes. Anyone can do that. It's completely within the rules."

"Tutoring? Sure, let's call it that," Shalini sneered, her eyes dropping to the sketchpad in Mona's arms. "But hiding a student's dropping scores and making secret pacts in the staff room? That is definitely not within the rules. If the director finds out that Professor Sharma is showing favoritism to a failing student just because she can draw pretty trees, both of them will be suspended by this evening."

Mona felt the ground beneath her feet slip away. The weight of her parents' expectations crashed back into her mind. If Shalini spoke a single word to the authorities, the scandal would reach her home. Her father’s proud face would turn into an expression of utter shame.

"Please, Shalini," Mona said, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper, abandoning her pride entirely. "Please don't say anything. This deal... it's the only way I can keep both my parents happy and continue my study. I am working hard, I swear."

Shalini looked at Mona, her smile turning even more sinister. "Oh, I know you are desperate, Mona. And honestly, I don't care about your silly drawings. But I do care about the upcoming grand mock test. The one where the top three students get the special scholarship and direct recommendation letters for the medical entrance preparation."

Aman frowned, his posture tightening. "What do you want, Shalini? Stop playing games and name your price."

Shalini turned her gaze to Aman, her eyes narrowing. "Simple. You are my only real competition for the rank one scholarship, Aman. I want you to step down from the grand test next week. Give an excuse. Say you are sick, or just leave the paper blank."

"Are you insane?" Aman said, taking a step forward. "I've been preparing for that scholarship for six months! I won't just throw it away because you're blackmailing us!"

"Then watch Mona's world burn," Shalini replied calmly, tapping her phone screen. "I already have a voice recording of your little confession just now. One tap, and it goes straight to the director's email group. Let's see if your six months of preparation can save Mona from getting expelled and her father getting called to the campus."

The silence that followed was heavy and agonizing. Mona looked at Aman, her heart breaking. She couldn't let Aman sacrifice his dream for her mistake. He was just trying to be a helpful junior and a good friend. He didn't deserve to lose his scholarship.

Before Aman could answer, Mona stepped out from behind him, her eyes steady despite the tears threatening to fall.

"Don't do it, Aman," Mona said firmly, then turned to face Shalini. "Go ahead, Shalini. Send the recording."

Shalini blinked, her confident smile faltering for a split second. "What?"

"I said, send it," Mona repeated, her voice growing stronger. "If I have to leave this institute, I will. If my parents get mad at me, I will face them and tell them the whole truth about my passion. But I will not let you ruin Aman’s hard work. Delete the recording, or send it. Choose right now."

Shalini stared at Mona, surprised by her sudden burst of courage. The atmosphere behind the old library building was stretched so tight it felt like a rubber band about to snap. Shalini’s finger hovered over her phone screen, her face twisting in frustration as her bluff was called.

Just then, the loud, ringing sound of the main coaching bell echoed across the campus, announcing that the first morning lecture was starting in exactly five minutes.

Shalini slowly lowered her phone, her eyes glaring at Mona with pure venom. "You think you're brave, Mona? Fine. Let's see how brave you are when the test results come out. I won't send the recording to the director yet. But if you don't score at least fifteen percent higher in physics this Monday, I will personally show this recording to your father at the main gate. Let's see if your logic can save you then."

Without waiting for a reply, Shalini turned on her heel and marched down the dusty path, vanishing into the morning fog.

Mona let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders collapsing as the adrenaline left her body. Aman turned to her, his face filled with deep respect but also immense worry.

"That was incredibly brave, Mona," Aman said softly. "But she just raised the stakes. Fifteen percent in one week? That’s nearly impossible for a single chapter of physics."

Mona looked down at her hands, then up at the gray Patna sky as the fog began to clear. "Then we better not waste a single minute, Aman. Teach me."
