Chapter 5: The Boy Who Returned

"HELP ME!"

The voice echoed through the forest.

Everyone froze.

"It’s him!" Mehak cried.

The footsteps grew louder.

Branches snapped.

Leaves rustled.

Then, through the thick fog, a figure stumbled onto the trail.

It was the missing student.

Rohan.

His clothes were torn.

Mud covered his arms and face.

His eyes were wide with terror.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Riya rushed toward him.

"Rohan!"

He grabbed her shoulders before she could say another word.

"We have to leave."

His voice shook.

"We have to leave right now."

"What happened?" Aarav asked.

"Where were you?"

Rohan looked over his shoulder into the fog.

As if expecting something to emerge from it.

"They're coming."

A cold chill passed through the group.

"Who's coming?" Tanya demanded.

Rohan swallowed hard.

"The people in the forest."

Nobody spoke.

The words sounded ridiculous.

Yet the fear in his eyes was impossible to ignore.

The group quickly led him to a fallen log near the trail.

Aditi handed him water.

His hands trembled so badly that he almost dropped the bottle.

For several minutes, nobody said anything.

Finally, Aarav spoke.

"Start from the beginning."

Rohan took a deep breath.

"Last night... I heard someone calling me."

The group exchanged nervous glances.

"The voice sounded like my sister."

His eyes dropped to the ground.

"She died three years ago."

Silence.

Aditi felt goosebumps rise on her skin.

"I knew it couldn't be her," Rohan continued. "But the voice sounded so real."

"What happened then?" Naina asked softly.

"I followed it."

"Into the forest?"

Rohan nodded.

"The deeper I went, the louder it became."

His breathing quickened.

"Then I found the trail."

Everyone looked at the old path around them.

"The Whispering Trail."

Rohan's face turned pale.

"There are people here."

"What people?" Sana asked.

"I don't know."

"You saw someone?"

He nodded slowly.

"At first I thought they were students."

The forest seemed to grow quieter.

"They stood between the trees."

"How many?" Aarav asked.

"Dozens."

Nobody liked that answer.

"They never moved."

Rohan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"They just watched."

A branch cracked somewhere in the distance.

Every head turned instantly.

Nothing was there.

Yet.

The group decided to return to camp immediately.

Whatever mystery existed here could wait.

Finding help was more important.

But the moment they turned around, a problem became obvious.

The trail behind them was gone.

Everyone stared.

The path they had used to enter the forest had disappeared.

Only dense trees stood where it should have been.

"No," Sana whispered.

"No, no, no."

Aarav walked forward.

He searched the area.

Nothing.

The entrance was gone.

Completely gone.

"That's impossible," he muttered.

Fear spread through the group.

For the first time, even Tanya looked worried.

"We're lost."

As evening approached, the fog became thicker.

The forest grew darker.

Soon they were forced to stop walking.

"We need shelter," Aarav said.

After searching nearby, they discovered an old stone structure hidden among the trees.

It looked ancient.

Half of the roof had collapsed.

Vines covered the walls.

"What is this place?" Mehak asked.

Nobody knew.

Above the doorway, nearly hidden beneath moss, was a faded symbol.

A circle surrounded by strange markings.

Aditi felt an uneasy sensation.

The symbol looked familiar.

As if she had seen it somewhere before.

But where?

Inside, the structure was surprisingly dry.

The students settled down for the night.

Nobody wanted to sleep.

Not after everything that had happened.

Hours passed.

The forest outside remained silent.

Too silent.

Then, sometime after midnight, Aditi woke suddenly.

A faint light flickered outside.

She quietly stood and moved toward the broken window.

At first she saw nothing.

Then her heart nearly stopped.

Figures.

Standing among the trees.

Watching the building.

One.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty.

More than she could count.

None of them moved.

None of them spoke.

They simply stood there.

Waiting.

Aditi backed away from the window.

Her hands trembling.

Then one of the figures slowly lifted its head.

And smiled.

To be continued...
