The devil's ledger

Rain continued to pour from the sky.

The bodies of the attackers lay scattered across the street.

Steam rose from the wet pavement as police sirens echoed somewhere in the distance.

Adrian stood frozen.

His heart still pounded from the encounter.

The stranger's words repeated inside his head.

Welcome to the game.

A game.

That was what the man had called it.

As though Vincenzo's murder was nothing more than a move on a chessboard.

As though countless deaths were merely pieces being sacrificed.

Adrian clenched his fists.

The rage inside him burned hotter than ever.

He wanted answers.

Names.

Blood.

Anything that would bring him closer to the truth.

Antonio grabbed his shoulder.

"We need to leave."

Adrian didn't move.

"Did you see his face?"

"Yes."

"He was there."

"I know."

"He killed my father."

Antonio's expression hardened.

"I know."

Luca stepped forward.

"Adrian, the police are coming."

That finally broke his trance.

The sirens were getting louder.

Closer.

Soon, this entire area would be crawling with officers.

And many of them were likely on someone's payroll.

The group quickly disappeared into the maze of narrow streets.

---

An hour later.

They found temporary shelter inside an abandoned textile factory near the industrial district.

The building looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Rust-covered machinery.

Dust everywhere.

Perfect.

Nobody would expect the heir of the Moretti Syndicate to hide in a place like this.

Antonio secured the entrances while Luca scavenged supplies.

Sophia stood near a shattered window, keeping watch.

Adrian sat alone on an old wooden crate.

His exhaustion was finally catching up to him.

Everything felt unreal.

Less than twenty-four hours ago, he had a home.

A family.

A future.

Now all he had were questions.

And enemies.

Lots of enemies.

A sudden sound interrupted his thoughts.

Footsteps.

Antonio emerged from deeper inside the factory.

Something was in his hand.

A small black package.

Adrian frowned.

"What's that?"

Antonio looked confused.

"I found it hidden in one of the storage rooms."

Sophia turned immediately.

"Hidden?"

Antonio nodded.

"There was a false wall."

The room grew quiet.

False walls weren't normal.

Especially not in abandoned factories.

Antonio placed the package on a nearby table.

Everyone gathered around it.

The box wasn't large.

Just big enough to hold a book.

Or documents.

A silver emblem decorated the lid.

The moment Adrian saw it, his breath caught.

The Moretti family crest.

His father's crest.

"What is this?" Luca asked.

Adrian slowly reached for the box.

His hands trembled slightly.

Something told him this wasn't a coincidence.

Someone had hidden it here intentionally.

For years.

Maybe longer.

The lock clicked open.

Inside lay a single leather-bound ledger.

Nothing else.

No money.

No weapons.

Just a book.

Sophia frowned.

"That's it?"

Adrian carefully lifted it.

The leather cover was old.

Worn from age.

Yet one thing immediately stood out.

Across the front cover, written in gold letters, were three words.

For Adrian Only

The room went silent.

Luca swallowed.

Antonio stared.

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

Adrian felt a chill crawl down his spine.

His father had left this.

For him.

The realization hit hard.

Vincenzo had known something.

Maybe even anticipated his own death.

With shaking fingers, Adrian opened the ledger.

Inside, a folded letter slipped onto the floor.

His heart stopped.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Vincenzo Moretti.

His father.

Adrian picked it up carefully.

For a moment, he simply stared at it.

This was the last thing his father had ever written to him.

The room seemed smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Finally, he unfolded the letter.

And began to read.

---

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then I am likely dead.

Adrian's throat tightened immediately.

Even Antonio looked away.

The words felt like a punch.

Yet he forced himself to continue.

I always hoped this day would never come.

I hoped I would have more time.

More time to prepare you.

More time to tell you the truth.

Unfortunately, men like me rarely get what they hope for.

Adrian blinked rapidly.

His father's voice almost seemed alive inside the words.

You probably believe my enemies killed me because of power.

You are wrong.

Everyone exchanged glances.

Sophia stepped closer.

Adrian continued reading.

What is happening now began twenty-three years ago.

Long before you were born.

His pulse accelerated.

Twenty-three years?

What could possibly be that old?

There were five men.

Five friends.

Five kings.

The room fell silent.

Together, we built the foundations of the modern underworld.

We controlled everything.

Money.

Weapons.

Politicians.

Information.

We believed ourselves untouchable.

Adrian's stomach twisted.

His father had never spoken about any partners.

Never.

Then one of us betrayed the others.

The words seemed to darken the room.

Greed destroyed our brotherhood.

Blood followed.

And the consequences have finally returned.

Sophia's eyes widened.

"Five kings..."

Antonio looked troubled.

Adrian continued.

The man hunting you now is connected to that betrayal.

The room froze.

Adrian's heartbeat thundered.

Connected.

Not responsible.

Connected.

That meant there was still someone else involved.

Someone hidden.

Someone pulling strings from the shadows.

You must not trust appearances.

The enemy you can see is rarely the most dangerous one.

A cold feeling settled inside Adrian's chest.

The stranger suddenly felt less like a mastermind.

And more like a weapon.

Used by someone else.

---

The letter continued for several more pages.

Each revelation was worse than the last.

Secret alliances.

Hidden betrayals.

Disappearances.

Murders covered up for decades.

The deeper Adrian read, the more he realized something terrifying.

His father had been carrying secrets his entire life.

Secrets powerful enough to start wars.

Then he reached the final page.

And his blood turned cold.

There is a list.

Adrian frowned.

A list?

Inside this ledger are names.

Politicians. Judges. Police commissioners. Business leaders.

Every person who helped build the empire.

The room became deathly quiet.

Antonio looked horrified.

Sophia looked stunned.

Luca looked confused.

Adrian stared at the words.

A list like that could destroy governments.

Entire organizations.

Entire cities.

His father had kept records of everyone.

Everything.

Every secret.

Every crime.

Every betrayal.

It was a weapon.

A very dangerous weapon.

Then came the final line.

The line that changed everything.

And if anyone discovers you possess this ledger, they will kill you to get it.

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The reality of the situation settled heavily over the room.

Adrian wasn't simply being hunted anymore.

He was carrying something people would start wars over.

Something worth killing thousands for.

Something powerful enough to change the balance of power across the entire city.

The ledger.

The Devil's Ledger.

A treasure.

And a death sentence.

---

Suddenly, Sophia's phone vibrated.

Her face immediately paled.

Antonio noticed.

"What is it?"

She looked up slowly.

For the first time since Adrian met her, she appeared genuinely afraid.

"That's impossible."

"What?" Luca asked.

Sophia swallowed.

"My father."

The room froze.

"What about him?" Adrian asked.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"He's dead."

Nobody spoke.

The words seemed impossible.

Yesterday Vincenzo Moretti.

Today another mafia king.

Sophia stared at the message.

Shock filled her eyes.

"He was assassinated twenty minutes ago."

Adrian felt his blood run cold.

Twenty minutes.

That meant it happened while they were reading the ledger.

While they were hiding.

While they thought they had time.

The enemy was still moving.

Still striking.

Still winning.

Sophia lowered her phone slowly.

Her expression changed.

The grief disappeared.

Replaced by something darker.

Anger.

Pure anger.

For the first time, Adrian understood exactly how she felt.

Because he felt it too.

And somewhere out there, another family had just lost its king.

The war wasn't slowing down.

It was escalating.

Fast.

Very fast.

Then another realization struck Adrian.

If Sophia's father was dead...

That meant only three of the original five kings remained.

And if the enemy was targeting them one by one...

The next move was already coming.

The question wasn't who would die next.

The question was whether any of them would survive long enough to stop it.
