The warmth of Caelen’s grip was the only grounding thing in the massive, cold observatory. Ren’s heart hammered against his ribs, his mind racing to process the shift in the narrative. In the original text of Night of the Blood Oath, Prince Caelen never showed this kind of vulnerability, let alone open defiance against the Emperor this early in the story.
"Can you stand?" Caelen asked, his voice dropping an octave, losing the sharp edge he had used against Commander Vane.
Ren nodded slowly, taking a shallow breath to steady the residual tremor in his hands. He leaned less on the prince's arm, though Caelen didn't fully let go, keeping a supportive hand firmly against the small of Ren's back as they stepped down from the glowing marble dais.
"I can," Ren replied, his voice regaining its steady, melodic tone. "But Vane won't waste time. The Emperor will see your defiance as a direct threat to his throne."
"My father sees everything as a threat," Caelen said coldly, his eyes scanning the shattered iron entrance of the tower. He guided Ren toward a concealed side door hidden behind a massive tapestry depicting the founding of the Elysian Empire. "Which is why we cannot stay here. The tower is no longer secure. My personal estate at the edge of the palace grounds is heavily fortified. We go there."
They navigated the narrow, winding stone corridors in silence, the shadows lengthening as the twilight outside deepened into night. Ren watched the prince’s rigid back, noting the way Caelen's hand never strayed far from the hilt of his sword. Every instinct from Ren's past life as an analyst told him he was stepping into a dangerous gamble, but looking down at his own hands—still huming with a faint, residual violet glow—he knew he had the power to change the script.
They reached the private carriage waiting in the secluded lower courtyard just as the palace bells began to toll, a heavy, ominous sound ringing across the grounds.
As the carriage door closed, cutting them off from the cool night air, Caelen sat opposite Ren, his purple eyes fixed on the mage in the dim carriage light.
"The Emperor will call a mandatory council tomorrow at dawn to address the ritual," Caelen stated, his expression completely unreadable now. "He will demand a demonstration of your stability. If you fail to perform, my protection won't be enough to stop a full military arrest."
Ren leaned back against the leather seat, gripping the elderwood staff tightly. "Then I won't fail. I know exactly what your father expects to see."
