Until the Rain Stopped

Until the Rain Stopped

The rain

The rain had always reminded Anaya of him.

Even after five years, every drop that touched her window carried a memory of Kabir—the boy who had once promised to stay with her forever.

They had met during their first year of college. Anaya was quiet and loved books. Kabir was cheerful, always making people laugh. They were complete opposites, yet somehow they fit together perfectly.

What started as friendship slowly became love.

They spent countless evenings sitting under the old banyan tree near the campus. They talked about everything—their dreams, fears, favorite songs, and the future they wanted to build together.

"I'll become a writer one day," Anaya would say.

"And I'll be the first person to buy your book," Kabir would reply with a smile.

As the years passed, their bond grew stronger. Everyone around them believed they would eventually get married.

So did they.

But life rarely follows the plans we make.

After graduation, Kabir received a job offer in another city. It was a wonderful opportunity, but it meant leaving Anaya behind.

"It's only for a few years," he said while holding her hands. "Then I'll come back, and we'll start our life together."

Anaya nodded, trying to hide her tears.

The distance was difficult at first, but they managed. They called each other every night and shared every little detail of their day.

Then things slowly began to change.

Kabir became busier with work. The calls became shorter. The messages became less frequent.

Anaya told herself it was temporary.

But deep inside, she felt something slipping away.

One evening, after weeks of unanswered messages, her phone finally rang.

It was Kabir.

Relief washed over her.

But the moment she heard his voice, she knew something was wrong.

"Anaya," he said quietly, "I need to tell you something."

Her heart began to race.

"My parents want me to marry someone."

There was silence.

"And what do you want?" she asked.

Kabir didn't answer immediately.

The silence itself became the answer.

Anaya felt tears fill her eyes.

"What happened to all our promises?" she whispered.

"I tried," he said, his voice breaking. "I really tried."

That night ended their six-year love story.

No arguments.

No anger.

Just two broken hearts and a goodbye neither of them wanted.

Years passed.

Anaya focused on her career and eventually became a successful writer. Her books touched thousands of lives, but there was one story she never managed to write—the story of Kabir.

Then, one rainy evening, fate brought them together again.

She was attending a book event when she saw him standing near the entrance.

Kabir.

Older. More mature.

But still Kabir.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he smiled.

The same smile that had once made her heart skip a beat.

They spent hours talking that night.

They spoke about their lives, their careers, and the years they had lost.

Kabir told her he had a daughter.

Anaya smiled politely while hiding the pain in her chest.

The conversation flowed easily, as if no time had passed at all.

Yet both of them knew there was a wall between them now—a wall built by time, choices, and circumstances.

As the event ended, they walked outside together.

Rain was falling softly.

Just like the day they had first met.

"I read all your books," Kabir said.

Anaya laughed.

"Did you really buy them?"

"Every single one."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Kabir looked at her and said the words she had secretly waited years to hear.

"I never stopped loving you."

Tears filled Anaya's eyes.

"Then why didn't you stay?"

Kabir looked down.

"Because sometimes love isn't enough to defeat life."

The answer hurt because it was true.

A car arrived to pick him up.

Kabir opened the door, then turned back one last time.

"I'm proud of you, Anaya."

She smiled through her tears.

"And I'm happy you found your life."

They knew they would probably never meet again.

Kabir got into the car.

Anaya stood there in the rain, watching the taillights disappear into the darkness.

For years she had wondered whether true love ever dies.

That night she finally found the answer.

It doesn't.

Sometimes love simply changes into a memory—one that stays quietly in your heart for the rest of your life.

The rain continued to fall.

And for the first time in years, Anaya let herself cry.

Not because she had lost him.

But because she had finally learned how to let him go.
