The Wife He Never Chose
The Wife He Never Chose
Chapter 1: A Promise Beyond the Grave
The Sterling mansion glittered beneath the evening lights.
Guests dressed in designer gowns and tailored suits filled the grand ballroom, celebrating the seventy-fifth birthday of William Sterling, the founder of the Sterling Group.
At the center of it all stood Ethan Sterling.
Tall, handsome, and the future CEO of the family empire, Ethan was accustomed to attention. Yet tonight, his eyes searched only for one person.
Vanessa Brooks.
The woman he loved.
She stood across the room in a stunning black dress, smiling as she spoke with guests. The moment she noticed him looking, she smiled back.
Ethan felt his heart lighten.
After three years together, he was finally planning to propose.
Everything seemed perfect.
Until his grandfather asked to speak with him privately.
"Come with me, Ethan."
William's voice was weaker than usual.
Concern crossed Ethan's face as he followed him into the study.
The old man sat behind his desk and opened a drawer.
Inside was a worn photograph.
He handed it to Ethan.
A young woman smiled back from the picture.
She wasn't dressed in expensive clothing.
There were no diamonds or luxury around her.
Yet her smile felt warm and genuine.
"Her name is Lily Carter," William said.
Ethan frowned.
"Who is she?"
"The daughter of the man who once saved my life."
Ethan remained silent.
Many years ago, before the Sterling empire existed, William had been involved in a terrible car accident during a storm.
A stranger had risked his own life to save him.
That stranger was James Carter.
The two men became lifelong friends.
When James died, William quietly helped support his family from a distance.
"I made a promise to him," William continued.
"A promise that our families would always take care of one another."
Ethan nodded.
"I understand, Grandpa."
William looked directly into his eyes.
"I want you to marry Lily."
The room fell silent.
Ethan thought he had heard wrong.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Ethan slowly stood.
"Grandpa, I love Vanessa."
"I know."
"Then why would you ask me to marry someone I've never met?"
William sighed heavily.
"Because there are things you don't yet understand."
"Then help me understand."
The old man's gaze softened.
"Money can buy loyalty for a while. Beauty can attract attention. Status can open doors."
He pointed toward Lily's photograph.
"But character lasts forever."
Ethan shook his head.
"That's not a reason to marry someone."
"Maybe not."
"Then why?"
William remained silent for several moments.
Finally, he smiled sadly.
"Because I trust her with your happiness."
For the first time, Ethan felt afraid.
The conversation sounded less like a request and more like a final wish.
A few weeks later, William Sterling passed away.
The entire city mourned his death.
Ethan mourned the loss of the man who had raised him.
For days he struggled with the promise.
Every part of him wanted to refuse.
Every part of him wanted to marry Vanessa.
But every memory of his grandfather made him hesitate.
Finally, he made his choice.
He would honor William's last wish.
The decision shattered more than one heart.
Vanessa cried when he told her.
"You don't love her."
"No."
"Then why are you doing this?"
"Because I owe him everything."
"And what about us?"
Ethan had no answer.
A month later, he stood at the altar beside a woman he barely knew.
Lily Carter.
She looked beautiful in her wedding gown.
Yet there was sadness hidden behind her smile.
She knew exactly why he was marrying her.
Not because he loved her.
Not because he wanted her.
But because of a promise.
As they exchanged vows, neither imagined how much their lives were about to change.
The guests applauded.
The ceremony ended.
And a marriage neither of them truly wanted had officially begun.
For Ethan, it felt like the end of a dream.
For Lily, it felt like the beginning of a battle she wasn't sure she could win.
