Chapter 4: The Spark
They clicked instantly, right there in front of my bleeding eyes.
It was a terrifyingly beautiful, utterly heartbreaking thing to witness. Within just ten short minutes of standing by the busy festival booths, they were already finishing each other’s sentences and sharing inside jokes about their eccentric literature professor. Elena would throw her head back and laugh her bright, melodic laugh that always cut through a loud crowd like a silver bell, and Liam would watch her with an expression I had never seen on his face before. It wasn’t the polite, distant look he gave his classmates, it was an expression of total, immediate captivity. He was completely under her spell, pulled into her orbit by a gravity I couldn't fight.
I stood exactly two feet away from them, feeling the temperature of the warm April day drop to a freezing cold around me. The deep connection I had prayed for, the imaginary conversations I had carefully scripted in my bedroom for months, they were finally happening right in front of me but they weren’t happening with me. I was just the ghost standing in the corner, a convenient prop used to bring them into the same space. Every witty remark Liam made was directed at her, every sweet smile was meant to make her blush.
“You guys should definitely come grab tacos with me across the street,” Elena said suddenly, looking back and forth between the two of us with wide, excited eyes. She was always so generous with her inclusion, never realizing that her kindness was a knife to my chest.
“I’d absolutely love to,” Liam said without even a single second of hesitation, his voice full of genuine excitement. Then, as an afterthought, he turned his head to look at me, a polite, distant politeness returning to his eyes. “Are you coming with us, Chloe?”
I looked at Elena’s radiant, beautiful face, and then at Liam’s expectant, polite eyes. I felt a cold, sharp ache blooming deeply behind my ribs, a physical pain that made it hard to take a full breath, but I forced my lips to move upward. I smiled. Because that’s what a good sister is supposed to do. That’s what a background character is always supposed to do to keep the peace and ensure the protagonists can have their perfect scene.
“You guys go ahead without me,” I said smoothly, amazed at how steady and calm my voice sounded despite the storm raging inside me. “I promised Maya I’d stay and help her clean up the heavy boxes at the booth. Have fun, you guys.”
“Aw, what a bummer,” Elena said, already turning around to walk away toward the campus gates, her hand casually brushing against his sleeve as she guided him. “See you at home later tonight, Chlo!”
Liam gave me a small, polite wave. I stood entirely still among the bustling crowd, watching their retreating backs. I watched the way their shoulders brushed against each other as they navigated through the loud crowd, their paces matching effortlessly. They already looked like a perfect pair, two beautiful people moving toward a beautiful future.
Sometimes, you have to smile through the worst pain just to make sure you don't ruin someone else's perfect moment.
The sun was shining brightly on everyone else at the festival, casting golden light over the laughing families and happy couples, but as I walked back to help Maya, the world felt entirely dark. My feet dragged against the pavement, each step a heavy reminder of what I had just witnessed. I realized that my secret love story had ended before it even had a chance to begin, and there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop the wheels that had been set in motion. I was destined to be the spectator of my own heartbreak.
