Chapter Five: Half a Sigil and Drops of Water

Chapter Five: Half a Sigil and Drops of Water

While Emperor Megin raged in fury within the upper hall of the house, trembling with the might of darkness at having found only half the sigil, Kaelon's feet were making their way through the darkness of the stone stairway that descended beneath the house.

With every step downward, that warm pulse in his chest grew stronger, and with it, the air grew heavier with moisture, carrying a scent like the deep waves of the sea, as though the earth itself were breathing from the ocean floor. At the bottom of the stairway, the horizon opened onto an awe-inspiring sight: a mysterious pool of water leading into a dark tunnel. In that moment, Kaelon felt fear creeping into his limbs; the cave walls shook violently, and the sounds of destruction echoing from above sent tremors through his heart. Deep inside, he carried only one wish, suspended between fear and hope: *Please let Grandfather be alright.*

When he reached the end of the watery path, a massive stone wall rose before him, words carved into its surface as though written in dried blood:

*"None may pass through this door but those who hold great power... and for those who lack it, nothing awaits here but death."*

Kaelon did not take the warning lightly; he remembered his family's history, how one of his ancestors, five centuries ago, had entered this very place and obtained the first half without possessing any extraordinary power. But how could he get through now?

He knelt down, searching through the darkness, until he found a pointed stone. He began striking the wall with it as hard as he could, but each blow rebounded weakly, not even leaving a scratch on the unyielding rock. His breaths grew rapid and heavy in his chest, and a thought flashed through his mind: *My energy flowed into the wooden sword during my fight with Grandfather... could I do the same with this stone?*

He closed his eyes and focused with all his will. He felt warmth surging from his arms into the stone, and the moment he felt it tremble, he hurled it with devastating force at the stone door. But the shock came swiftly; the instant the energy-charged stone touched the door's damp surface, it crumbled and shattered into dust, scattering uselessly.

Despair began to close around Kaelon's throat, and he was on the verge of giving up and turning back—but a wild flash lit up his mind: *What if I directed my energy at the door itself? If the stone crumbled from the pressure of the energy, maybe the wall would soften if it were saturated with my water energy!*

He stepped forward steadily and placed both palms against the cold rock. He closed his eyes and unleashed every ounce of energy hidden within his veins. And suddenly, something happened that he never expected; the solid wall melted beneath his palms, the stone turning to liquid water that dissolved and drained away, revealing a long, dark passage.

Kaelon stepped inside, and at the end of the passage, a faint blue light shimmered... it was the other half of the Water Sigil! The boy's heart leapt with longing, and he stepped forward, about to rush ahead recklessly—but his foot froze mid-air the moment his eyes dropped to the ground.

His throat tightened with horror; the ground was carpeted with corpses and skeletons—humans and Elemental Incarnates alike, lying together in the silence of death. In that moment, he realized this place was no shrine—it was a mass grave, where the slightest mistake meant annihilation.

He began moving slowly, every sense on full alert. Then suddenly, a sharp hissing sound erupted from the darkness! In a fraction of a second, a small droplet of water shot forward with the speed of a bullet. Kaelon dodged it just in time, tilting his head aside, and heard a terrifying sound of penetration; the droplet had pierced straight through the stone wall behind him, boring a deep hole into it!

His eyes widened in disbelief, and he whispered to himself: *What is this?! It's just a drop of water... how can it possess this much destructive power?!*

Before he could even process the shock, another hiss erupted; two droplets shot directly toward him, aimed at his feet. Kaelon leapt into the air with agility, dodging them both, and when his feet landed, he looked down to find a bone-white human skeleton, its flesh long since claimed by time. He bent down swiftly and snatched up one of the long thigh bones, gripping it tightly as though holding a wooden sword.

In that very instant, three droplets came rushing toward him from different angles in quick succession. With the precise timing instilled by his grandfather's rigorous training, he deflected all three with the bone, scattering them like rain. But before pride could even settle in his heart, hell broke loose; four droplets of water shot out from random directions at the exact same moment, at angles his human body could never block or dodge all at once.

He felt the cold grip of death close around his neck, and his mind went blank... but in that instant before catastrophe struck, something strange happened.

His body moved on its own! His muscles suddenly went slack, the bone slipping from his hand as his limbs flowed with a terrifying fluidity. The four droplets passed through his body without leaving a mark, as though he had become nothing more than a phantom.

His mind asked in astonishment: *How am I moving on my own?!*—but then he grasped the great secret; when one becomes still and calm like water, the traps surrounding you become nothing more than ordinary raindrops, unable to cause you harm. Kaelon let himself go completely, releasing every tension in his body, and began moving forward with calm confidence, his steps flowing as smoothly as water through the storm of droplets, not a single one striking him.

As he approached the platform where the sigil lay, the air itself split apart! A gelatinous, spectral being emerged from nothingness, shooting like an arrow straight into his chest. Kaelon felt a deathly cold sweep through his limbs, and he lost control of his own body. His feet moved against his will, carrying him toward a deep, dark well in the corner of the chamber, intent on hurling him in to die!

He tried to resist, but his physical body refused to obey. And suddenly, his consciousness was cut off from the outside world entirely... and he found himself somewhere utterly strange.

His spirit awoke to find itself standing within an enormous chamber, made entirely of glowing crystals radiating a heavenly blue light. He looked down at his hands and found them nearly transparent; he had become a spiritual form! In that instant, by pure instinct, he understood—he stood at the very deepest point of his being. He stood within his Heart Core.

And on the other side of the crystalline chamber stood the foreign spirit, bound by threads of energy that controlled his physical body outside, driving it toward the well.

Kaelon lunged forward at blinding speed and shouted in a booming voice:

"Who are you?! What are you doing to my body?!"

The spirit turned toward him, its eyes blazing with a watery light, and said with fury:

"I am the Guardian Spirit of the Water Sigil! You are nothing but a failed human trying to steal a great legacy... so I will kill you here, and end your existence!"

With a savage, aggressive motion, the spirit unleashed a violent burst of energy toward one of the crystalline walls of the Heart Core. The wall cracked, and Kaelon felt a pain that wrenched at his very soul; he realized this guardian was trying to destroy his core from within—and if the crystals shattered, his real body would die instantly!

Kaelon surged forward in fury, throwing a savage punch toward the guardian's face, but the blow veered strangely off course, striking another part of the core's spirit instead.

The guardian let out a mocking laugh and said:

"You fool! You cannot land a direct strike on me, just as I cannot kill you with my hands; we have no physical bodies here! This battle is one of will and control over energy!"

In that moment of pain, Kaelon felt an overwhelming surge of power burst forth from deep within him, and he remembered his grandfather's words about the dormant power of the soul. He realized that all his energy sprang from this very place. He closed his spiritual eyes, focused on his center, and instead of a physical attack, he took command of his own water energy, causing it to erupt like ropes from the crystalline walls.

Luminous chains shot forward with lightning speed, wrapping around the Guardian Spirit and binding it tightly against the walls of the core, with no chance of escape. The guardian screamed in helplessness as it struggled to break free, but Kaelon's will proved stronger and more unshakable.

In a flash, Kaelon seized the guardian's paralysis and pushed his spirit forward, returning to take control of his physical body once more.

Kaelon's eyes snapped open in the real world with a sharp gasp, his lungs flooding with air, to find himself collapsed right at the edge of the well, mere inches from plunging into the dark abyss. He let out a breath of relief, sweat drenching his face, then steadied himself and rose to his feet with firm, resolute steps.

He stepped toward the platform, and reached out his hand with confidence, finally grasping the glowing other half of the Water Sigil—ready for the epic battle that lay ahead.
