Episode 4: Behind the Veil

The palace remained under lockdown.

No guest was allowed to leave.

No servant was permitted beyond their assigned quarters.

Every corridor was guarded.

Every entrance watched.

The attempted poisoning had transformed a day of celebration into a hunt for a traitor.

Princess Aadhya sat in her chamber, staring at the bridal jewelry spread across the table.

Hours earlier she had almost died.

The thought still felt unreal.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Enter."

The door opened.

King Atesh stepped inside.

For a moment neither spoke.

The silence between them felt different now.

Less hostile.

More uncertain.

Aadhya crossed her arms.

"Have you found the person responsible?"

Atesh shook his head.

"Not yet."

Frustration flashed across her face.

"Then the traitor is still inside the palace."

"Yes."

The answer sent a chill through her.

Atesh walked toward the balcony.

Moonlight illuminated his face.

For the first time, Aadhya noticed how tired he looked.

He had spent the entire day questioning guards, searching rooms, and investigating guests.

"You should rest," she said quietly.

The king looked surprised.

"That sounds unlike you."

Aadhya rolled her eyes.

"Don't get used to it."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

For a brief moment, neither felt like enemies.

Then Atesh's expression became serious again.

"There is something you should know."

Aadhya straightened immediately.

"What?"

"The poison wasn't meant to stop the wedding."

She frowned.

"Then what was it meant to do?"

Atesh's gaze darkened.

"It was meant to start a war."

The realization hit her instantly.

If she had died during the ceremony, both kingdoms would have blamed each other.

Bloodshed would have followed.

Thousands would have suffered.

The traitor wasn't targeting just her.

They were targeting entire kingdoms.

Aadhya slowly sat down.

The truth felt heavier than she expected.

"Who would do something like that?"

"Someone who profits from chaos."

The room fell silent.

Outside, the palace bells echoed through the night.

Aadhya stared toward the window.

For the first time since meeting Atesh, she understood the burden he carried.

Kings did not only protect people.

They carried the responsibility of every decision.

Every mistake.

Every life.

"You always look so calm," she said suddenly.

Atesh looked at her.

"Appearances can be misleading."

Aadhya smiled faintly.

"That's the first honest thing you've said."

The king actually laughed.

A rare sound.

Unexpected.

Human.

For a moment the distance between them seemed smaller.

Then a loud crash echoed somewhere within the palace.

Both froze.

Another shout followed.

Atesh was moving before the sound had even faded.

"Aadhya, stay here."

She immediately stood.

"No."

His expression hardened.

"No?"

"You are not leaving me behind again."

For several seconds they stared at each other.

Then, surprisingly, Atesh nodded.

"Stay close."

Together they rushed into the corridor.

Guards hurried past them.

Servants whispered nervously.

The entire palace seemed alive with panic.

Eventually they reached the royal archives.

The door stood open.

Inside, papers covered the floor.

Shelves had been overturned.

Someone had searched the room.

Deliberately.

Atesh crouched beside a fallen document.

His eyes narrowed.

"They were looking for something."

Aadhya noticed a torn piece of parchment near a desk.

She picked it up.

The moment she read it, her heartbeat stopped.

It contained a royal seal.

A seal belonging to someone very close to her family.

Someone trusted.

Someone respected.

Slowly she handed it to Atesh.

The king's expression darkened instantly.

Without speaking, he folded the parchment and slipped it inside his coat.

"What does it mean?" she asked.

Atesh looked directly into her eyes.

"It means we're closer to the truth than I thought."

Before Aadhya could respond, another guard rushed into the room.

"Your Majesty!"

"What is it?"

The guard bowed quickly.

"We found evidence connecting the traitor to a member of the royal court."

Silence filled the room.

Aadhya felt her stomach drop.

The traitor wasn't a stranger.

They weren't a servant.

They weren't an outsider.

They were someone who sat beside kings.

Someone who smiled during celebrations.

Someone who had likely watched her grow up.

And somewhere within the palace walls, that person now knew the hunt was closing in.

The game had changed.

And for the first time, Aadhya and Atesh were standing on the same side.
