Chapter 5 — The One Who Stayed

Vihaan didn’t close the cupboard.

He couldn’t.

It stood there, wide open, the darkness inside thicker than anything else in the room. Not empty. Never empty.

His chest rose and fell slowly, but his body refused to move.

“Galat darwaza dekh rahe ho…”

The whisper still echoed in his mind.

He turned his head slightly toward the main door of the room.

Closed.

Silent.

Then back to the cupboard.

Open.

Waiting.

For a moment, he felt it again—that strange pull. Like something inside wasn’t trying to scare him… but calling him.

Inviting him.

“Mat ja…” he muttered to himself. “Bas… mat ja.”

But his feet moved anyway.

One step.

Then another.

The floor creaked softly beneath him.

The closer he got, the colder the air became. Not the kind of cold you feel on your skin—the kind that settles inside your bones.

Vihaan stopped just inches away from the cupboard.

The darkness inside didn’t look like normal darkness.

It felt… layered.

As if something was hiding behind it.

Watching through it.

He swallowed.

“Tum… kaun ho?” he asked quietly.

Silence.

Then—

A faint shift.

Something inside moved.

Not toward him.

But deeper inside.

Like it was making space.

Vihaan’s fingers trembled slightly as he raised his hand.

He was going to open it wider.

He didn’t know why.

But he had to.

And just as his fingers touched the edge—

A loud knock echoed through the room.

Vihaan jumped back.

The cupboard door slammed shut instantly.

The air changed.

Everything felt normal again.

Too normal.

The knock came again.

“Vihaan!”

This time, the voice was clear.

Real.

He turned toward the door slowly.

“Naina?” he called out.

“Haan… darwaza kholo,” she replied.

Vihaan hesitated.

For a few seconds, he didn’t move.

Then finally, he stepped forward and unlocked the door.

As soon as it opened, Naina pushed it slightly and stepped inside.

Her eyes immediately scanned the room.

The cupboard.

The mirror.

The corners.

Everything.

“Tumne khola tha?” she asked quickly.

Vihaan frowned. “Kya?”

“Cupboard,” she said. “Tumne khola tha?”

He shook his head slowly. “Woh… khud—”

Naina closed her eyes for a second, as if she expected that answer.

“Tum sunte kyun nahi ho?” she said under her breath.

“Tum mujhe pehle se jaanti ho kya?” Vihaan asked.

Naina looked at him.

This time, there was no calm in her eyes.

Only tension.

“Jitna tum samajh rahe ho… usse zyada,” she said.

Silence filled the room again.

Vihaan crossed his arms slightly.

“Seedha bolo, Naina. Yahan kya ho raha hai?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she walked toward the cupboard.

Vihaan stepped forward instantly.

“Mat jao uske paas,” he said.

Naina stopped.

Turned toward him.

“Tumhe lagta hai woh tumhe nuksaan pahunchana chahta hai?” she asked.

Vihaan didn’t respond.

Because he wasn’t sure.

“Jo andar hai…” Naina continued slowly, “woh tumhe warn kar raha hai.”

Vihaan’s eyes widened slightly.

“Phir dar kis se lagna chahiye?” he asked.

Naina didn’t answer.

That silence—

Was worse than anything else.

---

A few minutes later, they both sat on the edge of the bed.

Neither speaking.

Neither relaxed.

Vihaan finally broke the silence.

“Kashyap ne kaha… log khud usse milne jaate hain,” he said.

Naina let out a faint breath.

“Usne yeh bhi bataya hoga… ki sab wapas nahi aate,” she replied.

Vihaan’s jaw tightened.

“Tum bataogi ya main khud pata karu?” he asked.

Naina looked at him again.

Longer this time.

“Yeh room…” she said slowly, “normal nahi hai.”

“Yeh mujhe bhi pata hai,” Vihaan snapped.

“Sunna padega,” she said firmly.

He went quiet.

“This room doesn’t just show you something,” she continued. “Yeh tumhe use dekhne pe majboor karta hai… jo tum dekhna nahi chahte.”

Vihaan’s brows furrowed.

“Kya matlab?”

Naina leaned forward slightly.

“Har insaan ko yahan alag cheez dikhti hai,” she said. “Par ek cheez common hoti hai.”

Vihaan’s voice dropped.

“Kya?”

Naina hesitated.

Then said quietly—

“Woh cheez tumhare bahar nahi hoti.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

“Phir woh kya hai?” Vihaan asked.

Naina’s voice barely came out.

“Tumhare andar.”

---

The words didn’t make sense.

But they stayed.

They settled somewhere deep.

And refused to leave.

---

That night—

Vihaan didn’t try to sleep.

Neither did Naina.

They both stayed in the room.

Waiting.

Watching.

2:16 AM.

The air turned cold again.

But this time—

Vihaan noticed something new.

The shadows in the room were moving.

Not fast.

Not obvious.

But shifting.

Like they weren’t fixed to anything.

“Dekha tumne?” he whispered.

Naina nodded slowly.

“Yeh shuru ho gaya hai,” she said.

“Yeh kya hai?” Vihaan asked.

But before she could answer—

2:17 AM.

Everything stopped.

The shadows froze.

The air went still.

And then—

The mirror cracked.

A sharp line running across its surface.

Vihaan stood up instantly.

“Yeh phir—”

Before he could finish—

The crack spread.

Faster.

Deeper.

Until—

It shattered.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

But silently.

Like it wasn’t breaking—

It was opening.

Behind the broken glass—

There was no reflection.

Only darkness.

And then—

A figure.

Standing inside.

Still.

Watching.

Vihaan stepped back.

“Yeh… woh nahi hai,” he whispered.

Naina’s voice trembled for the first time.

“Maine kaha tha…”

The figure inside the mirror didn’t move.

But its presence filled the room.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Wrong.

Vihaan’s heartbeat pounded in his ears.

“Yeh kya hai?” he asked again.

Naina didn’t answer.

Because she was staring at something else.

Vihaan followed her gaze.

The cupboard.

It had opened again.

Slowly.

Silently.

And from inside—

A faint whisper came.

Desperate.

Urgent.

“Band karo… abhi…”

Vihaan looked between the mirror…

And the cupboard.

Two things.

Two presences.

Opposite.

And for the first time—

He understood.

One of them was warning him.

The other—

Was waiting for him to choose wrong.
