It's Not The End of Us

It's Not The End of Us

The Day Everything Changed

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

The sound of the clock seemed louder than usual.

A bright red circle surrounded today's date on the calendar sitting on Ami's desk.

INTERVIEW – 10:00 AM. DO NOT BE LATE!

She stared at the words for a moment before taking a deep breath.

This was it.

The opportunity she'd been waiting for.

The chance she'd spent two years chasing.

Standing in front of her mirror, she adjusted the collar of her blouse beneath a light cardigan. Her reflection looked calm enough, but her stomach was twisting itself into knots.

She slapped both cheeks lightly.

"Come on," she muttered.

Then she forced herself to smile.

Two years of rejection emails.

Two years of balancing part-time jobs and endless studying.

Two years of wondering whether all her efforts would ever amount to something.

Today had to be different.

Today had to matter.

"I can do this."

Grabbing her resume folder and purse, Ami hurried out of her apartment.

Her footsteps echoed loudly as she raced down the stairs.

Clack.

Clack.

Clack.

Every second felt precious.

Every minute counted.

The city was already alive by the time she reached the train station.

People flowed through the streets like rivers, umbrellas tucked under their arms beneath the cloudy morning sky.

Ami glanced at her phone.

9:08 AM.

Perfect.

A small sigh of relief escaped her lips.

If she caught the 9:15 train, she'd arrive with fifteen minutes to spare.

Enough time to breathe.

Enough time to compose herself before the interview.

For the first time all morning, she felt slightly confident.

Maybe things were finally going her way.

Still checking the time on her screen, she turned sharply around the corner leading toward the station entrance.

Just need to get through the turnstile—

Her thought never finished.

Something slammed into her.

Hard.

The impact stole the breath from her lungs.

Her phone flew from her hand.

The folder slipped from her grasp.

Papers scattered through the air like startled birds.

"Ah—?!"

For a moment, the world spun.

Then everything crashed back into place.

Ami immediately dropped to her knees.

"I am so, so sorry!" she blurted out. "I wasn't looking where I was going—"

Her hands moved frantically, gathering the resumes scattered across the damp pavement.

Then she froze.

Something felt wrong.

A strange silence settled around her.

The kind of silence that appears before a storm.

Slowly, she lifted her head.

Her eyes widened.

No.

Her breath caught in her throat.

No.

Anyone but him.

Standing only a few feet away was a man dressed in a dark jacket.

His hands rested deep inside his pockets.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

A familiar presence she had spent years trying to forget.

Ren.

The city noise faded into the background.

The crowds disappeared.

The station vanished.

All Ami could see was him.

For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Three years.

Three years since she'd last seen him.

Three years since they had walked away from each other.

Three years since she'd convinced herself she was finally over him.

Yet now, standing face-to-face again, every carefully buried memory clawed its way back to the surface.

Why today?

Why now?

Her chest tightened painfully.

Ren simply stared at her.

The anger in his eyes hit harder than the collision itself.

There was something else there too.

Something deeper.

Something wounded.

But it was hidden beneath years of resentment.

Years of silence.

Years of unanswered questions.

Neither of them knew where to begin.

So neither said anything at all.

Ami's fingers tightened around the folder in her hands.

They were trembling.

She hated that they were trembling.

Three years ago, they had said goodbye.

At least, that's what she'd believed.

The story had ended.

The chapter had closed.

The fire had burned itself out and become ash.

Or so she'd told herself.

But looking at him now...

Nothing felt finished.

A sudden roar shattered the silence.

The ground vibrated beneath her feet.

A bright light flashed from the station entrance.

The approaching train thundered through the tracks.

The noise snapped Ami back to reality.

Her eyes darted downward.

Her phone.

The lock screen glowed from the pavement.

9:14 AM.

Her heart nearly stopped.

The train.

The interview.

Her future.

Everything she'd worked for.

She couldn't lose this chance.

Not now.

Not because of the past.

Ami quickly grabbed her phone.

Her fingers tightened around it.

Then, gathering every ounce of strength she had left, she forced herself to step forward.

Toward the station.

Past him.

Past the memories.

Past the pain.

She couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes again.

"Excuse me."

The words came out softer than she intended.

Ren didn't respond.

He didn't move.

Yet she could feel his gaze following her.

Heavy.

Unrelenting.

As though there were a thousand things left unsaid between them.

Ami didn't stop.

If she stopped now, she wasn't sure she'd be able to leave.

The train doors began to close.

"Wait!"

She sprinted forward.

At the last second, she slipped through.

The doors slammed shut behind her.

Her breathing was uneven as she leaned against the wall.

The train lurched forward.

Slowly.

Then faster.

The platform began to drift away.

Ami stepped toward the window.

Almost against her own will.

She pressed her hand against the cool glass.

And looked back.

Through the blurred window, she saw him.

Still standing there.

Exactly where she'd left him.

Motionless.

Watching the train disappear into the distance.

Watching her leave all over again.

Then she noticed something near his feet.

One sheet of paper.

A single page from her folder remained behind.

Left on the platform between them.

A strange feeling settled in her chest.

Not relief.

Not sadness.

Something far more dangerous.

Hope.

Because looking into his eyes today had made her realize something she never expected.

Some endings weren't endings at all.

Some endings were merely pauses.

Pauses we misunderstood.

And perhaps...

This wasn't the end of their story.

Not yet.
