The Jade Cup and the Red Thread

[System Notification: Narrative Mode Engaged.]

[Current Location: The Imperial Banquet Hall, Great Liang Dynasty.]

[Atmosphere: Sophisticated, Opulent, Extremely Lethal.]

[Private Mental Chat: Shen Qing System]

Shen Qing: System, your tracking system is broken. My legs feel like jelly, my heart is thumping like a techno bassline, and the Crown Prince is still dragging me through the dark.

System: Scanning vitals... User’s physical condition is optimal. The trembling is due to psychological terror.

Shen Qing: Accurate. But why are we tracking an assassin in pitch-black bushes without a single guard?

System: Plot Insight: Crown Prince Yan trusts no one in the palace. By forcing you to accompany him, he ensures you cannot conspire with outside accomplices. If it's an ambush, you die first.

Shen Qing: ...I want to go back to the library. I promise I’ll never ignore a "Wet Floor" sign again.

[Group Chat: The Imperial Courtyard]

Crown Prince Yan: Stop shuffling your feet, Fourth Brother. The rustling of your silk robes is louder than a festival drum.

Shen Qing: Brother Yan, your highness, my savior... maybe we should call for backup? The Imperial Guard is paid by the hour; let them earn their salaries.

Crown Prince Yan: The Imperial Guard answers to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is your maternal uncle. Tell me, Shen Qing, if I call them, will they arrest the assassin, or will they help him finish the job?

Shen Qing: [Typing...]

Shen Qing: Wow. Okay. That’s a very valid, very terrifying political point.

Crown Prince Yan: You seem remarkably detached from your own family's treason. Usually, you'd be sneering or quoting poetry to mock my lack of maternal backing.

Shen Qing: Honestly? My brain feels completely rebooted. Let’s pretend the old Shen Qing died an hour ago. New Shen Qing just wants to survive, graduate from this night alive, and maybe take a very long nap.

Crown Prince Yan: [Pauses behind a carved marble pillar] You call me "Brother Yan." You haven't used that title since we were seven years old.

Shen Qing: It slipped out! Panic does weird things to my vocabulary.

Crown Prince Yan: Shh. Look ahead. The weeping willow by the ornamental pond.

[System Notification: Suspense Event Triggered!]

Event: The Rogue Server.

Danger Level: Medium-High.

Objective: Capture him alive to lower your Suspicion Meter. Current Suspicion: 92%.

[Group Chat: The Imperial Courtyard]

Shen Qing: He’s tearing off his servant clothes. He’s got dark night-stealth gear underneath. And he’s holding... wait, is that a flare?

Crown Prince Yan: He’s trying to signal his conspirators outside the wall. If that flare hits the sky, the compound will be swarming with rogue mercenaries.

Shen Qing: Shoot him! Throw a rock! Do something royal!

Crown Prince Yan: My bow is in the main hall. My throwing daggers were confiscated at the door for "safety protocols."

Shen Qing: Unbelievable. The security in this palace is a joke.

Crown Prince Yan: I have my sword, but charging him openly will give him enough time to light the fuse. We need a distraction.

System: Quest Alert! Distract the assassin for 10 seconds. Reward: +20% Affection from the Male Lead, -15% Suspicion. Penalty for failure: Explosive death.

Shen Qing: System, you are a sadist.

Shen Qing: @Crown_Prince_Yan Stand back. I’m going to use a modern psychological tactic called "The Sovereign Distraction."

Crown Prince Yan: What? Shen Qing, wait—

[Narrative Shift: External View]

Before Xuan Yan could grab the back of his brother’s robes, Shen Qing stepped out from behind the marble pillar into the moonlight. His deep violet robes caught the silver light, making him look ethereal, but his actions were entirely unhinged.

"Hey! You with the crooked hat!" Shen Qing shouted, clapping his hands together loudly.

The assassin whipped around, a spark already striking against the flint of his signal flare. He blinked, stunned to see the notoriously arrogant, cowardly Fourth Prince standing in the open, completely unarmed.

"Are you looking for this?" Shen Qing yelled, fumbling in his wide sleeves. He pulled out a heavy, ornate gold-plated hairpin he had ripped from his own topknot, letting his long black hair cascade down his shoulders. "This is worth three thousand silver taels! If you don't light that flare, I’ll throw it in the pond and you can have it!"

The assassin stared. Xuan Yan stared. The system's digital interface momentarily glitched in sheer confusion.

"You... you fool," the assassin hissed, momentarily lowering the flare. "The Fourth Prince has truly gone mad."

"Mad for a bargain!" Shen Qing yelled back, taking a dramatic step forward. "Look at the craftsmanship! Look at the jade inlay!"

Thwack.

A shadow blurred through the moonlight. Before the assassin could process the absurdity of the situation, Xuan Yan had closed the distance. The hilt of the Crown Prince’s sword slammed hard against the side of the assassin's jaw.

The man dropped like a stone, the unlit flare rolling harmlessly into the grass.

[Private Mental Chat: Shen Qing System]

System: Quest Complete!

System: Assassin captured alive. Suspicion Meter dropped to 77%.

Crown Prince Yan’s Affection Meter raised to 22%

(Status: Utterly Baffled but Strangely Charmed).

Shen Qing: I can't believe that worked. My heart is going to explode through my ribs.

[Group Chat: The Imperial Courtyard]

Crown Prince Yan: [Binding the assassin's hands with a silk sash] A "Sovereign Distraction"? You offered him your hair accessory.

Shen Qing: [Sitting flat on the grass, catching his breath] It worked, didn't it? Economics always trumps violence, Your Highness.

Crown Prince Yan: [Walking over, standing over Shen Qing in the moonlight] Your hair is a mess.

Shen Qing: Yeah, well, your life was saved by a mess. You're welcome.

Crown Prince Yan: [Reaches down, offering his hand] Get up. The grass is damp, and you’re shivering.

Shen Qing: [Staring at the pale, scarred hand] Are you going to throw me in the dungeon now?

Crown Prince Yan: No. You saved my life twice tonight, Fourth Brother. A tyrant doesn't forget an insult, but an Emperor never forgets a debt.

Crown Prince Yan: Besides... I need to find out exactly who taught my coddled, villainous brother how to negotiate like a black-market merchant.

System: Warning! The main plot has completely derailed. The "Villain" and the "Tyrant" have formed an unsanctioned alliance.

Shen Qing: [Taking Yan's hand, feeling the intense, warm grip] Shut up, System. We're just getting started.
