Chapter 5: The Woman Who Came Back

The next morning felt different.

The Blackwood Mansion was quieter.

Heavier.

Like the walls themselves knew something was coming.

Debbie stood in front of the bedroom mirror, staring at her reflection.

Sophia was coming home.

After months.

After disappearing without a word.

After changing everyone's lives.

Especially hers.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Edward stepped inside.

For a moment neither spoke.

Something had changed between them after the terrace conversation.

The distance that once existed had slowly disappeared.

Now every glance felt meaningful.

Every silence felt intimate.

Every accidental touch lingered longer than it should.

"You okay?" Edward asked.

Debbie forced a smile.

"Do I look okay?"

"No."

"Honesty. Nice."

His lips curved slightly.

God help her.

That smile was becoming a problem.

A very serious problem.

***

Sophia arrived that afternoon.

The entire family gathered in the grand entrance hall.

Debbie's mother looked nervous.

Her father looked angry.

Eleanor Blackwood looked like a queen preparing for battle.

And Edward...

Edward stood beside Debbie.

Close enough for their shoulders to brush.

The contact shouldn't have mattered.

Yet somehow it did.

The front doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Sophia walked inside.

Silence.

Debbie's breath caught.

Her sister looked beautiful.

Exactly as she remembered.

But different too.

Older.

Wiser.

Sadder.

Sophia's eyes immediately found Debbie.

Tears appeared.

"Debbie."

Debbie's heart tightened.

Months of anger.

Months of confusion.

Months of pain.

Yet seeing her sister standing there made everything feel complicated.

Very complicated.

Sophia rushed forward.

But Debbie didn't move.

The hesitation hurt them both.

Sophia stopped.

Pain flashed across her face.

"You hate me."

Debbie laughed bitterly.

"You disappeared."

"I know."

"You left us."

"I know."

"You left me."

The last words came out softer.

More vulnerable.

More honest.

Sophia lowered her gaze.

"I'm sorry."

For the first time, Debbie believed she meant it.

***

Dinner that evening was a disaster.

An absolute disaster.

Nobody knew what to say.

Nobody knew where to look.

The tension could have powered an entire city.

At one point, a waiter accidentally dropped a spoon.

Everyone jumped.

Including Eleanor.

Which was honestly terrifying.

Halfway through dinner, Sophia finally spoke.

"I never meant to hurt anyone."

Edward remained silent.

Sophia looked at him.

The room froze.

Everyone knew this conversation was coming.

Nobody wanted it to happen.

Especially not Debbie.

Sophia swallowed.

"I'm sorry, Edward."

His expression remained unreadable.

"You should have told me."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I know."

"I deserved that much."

Sophia nodded.

"You did."

The honesty surprised everyone.

Even Edward.

For the first time, Debbie noticed something important.

Edward wasn't looking at Sophia the way he used to.

There was no longing.

No heartbreak.

No love.

Just closure.

And somehow...

That realization filled her with hope.

***

Later that night, Debbie escaped to the mansion garden.

The cool evening air helped clear her mind.

A fountain sparkled beneath the moonlight.

Flowers swayed gently in the breeze.

It would have been peaceful if her emotions weren't completely out of control.

"You always run away when you're thinking."

Edward's voice came from behind her.

Debbie smiled.

"You always find me."

He walked closer.

Close enough that she could smell his cologne.

Close enough to make her pulse quicken.

Neither spoke.

The silence felt comfortable.

Dangerously comfortable.

"You know," Edward said quietly.

"I used to think Sophia knew me better than anyone."

Debbie looked up.

His gaze met hers.

"But she didn't."

Her heart skipped.

"Then who does?"

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

Edward stared at her.

Long.

Intensely.

The world seemed to disappear.

"You do."

Her breath caught.

The words settled between them.

Heavy.

Powerful.

Real.

"You see the parts nobody else sees."

His voice softened.

"The parts I don't show people."

Debbie's heart pounded.

Because she felt the same way.

She had never expected to understand him.

Never expected to trust him.

Never expected to care.

Yet here they were.

Standing beneath the moonlight.

Feeling things neither of them had planned.

Edward stepped closer.

And closer.

The space between them disappeared.

Debbie could hear her own heartbeat.

Could hear his breathing.

Could feel the warmth radiating from him.

His hand gently brushed hers.

Neither pulled away.

Neither wanted to.

"Debbie..."

The way he said her name nearly melted her resolve.

Slowly, carefully, he reached for her hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

The simple gesture felt more intimate than words.

More intimate than promises.

More intimate than anything either of them expected.

Debbie looked up.

Their eyes met.

And for the first time...

There was no confusion.

No pretending.

No pretending this was just a marriage arrangement.

No pretending they were only friends.

The truth stood between them.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

Unavoidable.

Edward lifted a hand and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

The touch was soft.

Tender.

His gaze dropped briefly to her lips.

Debbie's breath caught.

The moment stretched.

Neither moved.

Neither wanted to break it.

Then—

"Edward?"

Sophia's voice echoed from the mansion doorway.

Both froze.

Reality crashed back instantly.

The spell shattered.

Debbie stepped back.

Edward's jaw tightened.

The interruption felt painfully familiar.

Sophia stood at the entrance.

Watching them.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Shock.

Understanding.

Maybe even regret.

For a long moment nobody spoke.

Then Sophia whispered something that changed everything.

"I was too late."

Debbie's stomach dropped.

Too late for what?

And why did Sophia suddenly look heartbroken?
