The Unholy Adventure of the Inherent

The Unholy Adventure of the Inherent

Chapter 1 : The Inheritance

Rain drummed softly against the windows of Elara Voss’s apartment, creating a steady rhythm that blended with the scratching of her pen across paper.

The small studio apartment was cluttered but comfortable. Sketchbooks were stacked on every available surface, pages filled with character designs and unfinished storyboards. Empty coffee mugs crowded the corner of her desk, silent evidence of long nights spent working on deadlines.

Elara leaned back in her chair and rubbed her tired eyes.

Being a manga artist had always been her dream.

The work was difficult, the hours were exhausting, and success was never guaranteed, but she loved it.

Creating stories made sense to her in a way that reality often didn’t.

She glanced toward the clock mounted above her desk.

Almost midnight.

Another chapter completed.

A small smile crossed her face.

Then a sudden knock echoed through the apartment.

Elara frowned.

Nobody visited this late.

Setting her pen down, she crossed the room and opened the door.

A courier stood outside holding a thick envelope.

“Miss Elara Voss?” he asked politely.

“Yes?”

“I have something that requires your signature.”

Confused, she signed the electronic form and accepted the envelope.

The courier offered a brief nod before leaving.

Closing the door, Elara examined the package.

The envelope was old-fashioned, sealed with dark blue wax.

Her heart skipped.

She recognized the handwriting immediately.

It belonged to her grandmother.

A feeling of unease settled over her as she carefully broke the seal.

Inside were several legal documents and a handwritten letter.

She sat down slowly before opening it.

The first few lines stole the breath from her lungs.

Her grandmother had passed away.

The news felt unreal.

Elara hadn’t seen her in nearly two years, though they exchanged occasional letters.

Life had become busy.

Deadlines.

Work.

Responsibilities.

There had always seemed to be more time.

Now there wasn’t.

She spent several minutes staring silently at the page.

Memories surfaced one after another.

Summer afternoons spent listening to stories.

Walks through gardens.

Warm smiles.

The smell of old books and tea.

A lump formed in her throat.

When she finally continued reading, another surprise awaited her.

Her grandmother had left her an inheritance.

Not money.

Not jewelry.

A villa.

A lakeside property located several hours from the city.

According to the documents, it now belonged entirely to Elara.

The following week passed in a blur of paperwork and arrangements.

Before she knew it, she was traveling along winding country roads surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests.

The further she traveled, the more distant the city felt.

Eventually the driver slowed the car.

“We’re here,” he announced.

Elara looked up.

Her breath caught instantly.

The villa stood atop a gentle slope overlooking a vast lake.

White stone walls gleamed beneath the afternoon sunlight.

Flower gardens surrounded the property.

Tall trees swayed softly in the breeze.

The lake itself stretched far beyond what she could see, its surface sparkling like polished glass.

It was beautiful.

Beautiful in a way that felt almost unreal.

As she stepped from the vehicle, a cool breeze swept across the water.

For a moment she simply stood there, taking everything in.

The silence was remarkable.

No traffic.

No crowds.

Only birdsong and the distant sound of waves touching the shore.

The driver unloaded her luggage before departing down the road.

Soon Elara found herself completely alone.

Or so she thought.

As the sun began to lower toward the horizon, she wandered onto the villa’s back porch.

The lake reflected the orange and gold colors of sunset.

Its surface appeared calm.

Peaceful.

Yet something caught her eye.

Far from shore, a pale shape moved briefly beneath the water.

Just for a second.

Then it vanished.

Elara blinked.

The lake became still once more.

She laughed quietly to herself.

Perhaps it had only been a fish.

Turning away, she headed back inside.

She didn’t notice the faint ripple spreading across the water long after the shape had disappeared.

Nor did she realize that the lake, in its own mysterious way, had already noticed her arrival.
