Chapter 3: The Heir

The thirty-second floor of Webb Tower was not an office. It was a command center.

Marcus Webb led Ethan through double doors of frosted glass into a space that looked less like a corporate suite and more like the nerve center of a small nation. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed Clearwater's skyline — every rooftop, every highway overpass, every construction crane visible from up here. A long walnut conference table ran the length of the room. Three screens on the far wall showed live feeds: stock tickers, news channels, a satellite map of the city with colored pins marking properties and assets.

"Please, sit," Marcus said, pulling out a chair.

Ethan sat. The leather was cool. The chair probably cost more than his rent.

Marcus didn't sit. He stood at the window, hands clasped behind his back, and for a long moment simply looked at Ethan — studying him the way an architect studies a site before the first line is drawn.

"How much did your mother tell you?" Marcus asked.

"Broad strokes. Global financial empire. Fortune 50 corporation. Poverty-raising tradition. The Black Card has no limit."

"All accurate. Allow me to fill in the rest." Marcus turned to the screens. Tapped a remote. The satellite map zoomed out — way out — until it showed a world map dotted with hundreds of red markers. "This is Cole Global. Your grandfather's empire. Banking, energy, logistics, real estate, across six continents. Forty-three subsidiary companies. Over two hundred thousand employees worldwide."

Ethan stared at the map. Red dots clustered in New York, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Shanghai, São Paulo. More scattered across every continent except Antarctica.

"This —" Marcus tapped again and a corporate hierarchy chart appeared, "— is Cole Industries. Your father's domain. Global top fifty. Manufacturing, tech, infrastructure. Annual revenue last fiscal year: thirty-one billion dollars."

The number sat in the air like a physical object.

"And this," Marcus said, switching to the city map with its colored pins, "is what I manage. Webb Holdings. The Cole family's regional operation in Clearwater. We control roughly forty percent of the city's commercial real estate. We hold majority or significant minority stakes in fourteen local companies. We maintain relationships with the mayor's office, the city council, both federal representatives, and the district attorney."

Ethan looked at the pins. There were dozens. Hotels, office buildings, shopping centers, residential developments. Nearly half the city, marked in Cole family red.

"You've been running all of this," Ethan said. "For how long?"

"Twenty-three years. I was assigned to Clearwater before you were born. My job was to build and maintain the family's position here — and to be ready for the day you walked through that door." Marcus's expression didn't change. "I am ready."

Ethan leaned back in the chair. Somewhere below, thirty-one floors down, a security guard was packing his desk because Ethan had shown a card. Up here, a man who controlled forty percent of Clearwater was standing at attention, waiting for instructions from a twenty-two-year-old in damp jeans.

*This is real.*

"I have a question," Ethan said.

"Anything."

"The company I used to work for. Apex Entertainment. What do you know about it?"

Marcus's eyebrow twitched — the first unscripted movement Ethan had seen from him. "Mid-tier entertainment company. Talent management, event production, some music label activity. Annual revenue around eighty million. The board is controlled by Richard Payne, whose nephew—"

"Tyler Payne. The one who took my job."

A pause. Marcus's eyes sharpened. "You want it back."

"No." Ethan looked at the city map. Found the pin that marked Apex Entertainment's office building — the same building he'd been locked out of yesterday morning. "I want the whole company."

The silence lasted three seconds. Long enough for Ethan to wonder if he'd overplayed his hand. Long enough for the doubt to creep back — *Who am I to give orders like this? Yesterday I couldn't afford groceries.*

Then Marcus Webb smiled. It was a small thing, barely visible, but it transformed his face from a mask of professional control into something almost human. Almost warm.

"I can have a controlling interest by end of week," Marcus said. "Apex's share price is depressed. Payne's been mismanaging it for years. We'd be doing the shareholders a favor."

"Do it."

Marcus pulled out his phone. Three taps. "It's Webb. The entertainment company I briefed you on last quarter. Green light. Controlling stake by Friday." He ended the call. The whole exchange took eleven seconds.

Ethan watched. This was what unlimited resources looked like. Not flash. Not noise. A phone call and eleven seconds.

"Now," Marcus said, setting the phone down, "there's the matter of your living situation. I understand you're currently at—"

"Greenfield Apartments. Thirty-second unit. Thin walls, leaky faucet, a landlord who enjoys reminding me about rent."

"That won't do. We have a property at Oakwood Bay — The Crown Estate. Lakefront. Six bedrooms, twelve thousand square feet, private dock. It's been maintained and staffed for the past three years in anticipation of your arrival."

*Three years.*

They'd been waiting for him. Maintaining a mansion for a man who didn't know he existed.

"Staffed?" Ethan asked.

"Your personal assistant is already in residence. Her name is Serena. Selected from over a thousand candidates through the family office. Fluent in four languages. Trained in hospitality management, event coordination, and personal security protocols. She is discreet, capable, and entirely at your service."

Ethan processed this. A personal assistant. Living in his house. Waiting for him.

"There's also the matter of protection," Marcus continued. "Given your position — even undisclosed — certain precautions are necessary. I've arranged for close personal protection. Jade Kessler."

He tapped the screen. A photograph appeared: a woman in her mid-twenties, sharp-featured, dark hair pulled back. The photo was a candid — she was mid-stride across what looked like a military obstacle course, her expression flat and focused.

"Kessler family?" Ethan asked, surprising himself with the question.

Marcus gave him an approving look. "You've heard the name. The Kesslers have provided personal protection to the Cole family for two generations. Jade is the current generation's finest. Former special operations training. Krav Maga and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. She could incapacitate four men in a hallway without breaking stride. She'll live at The Crown Estate and accompany you when needed."

A bodyguard. A PA. A twelve-thousand-square-foot lakefront mansion. And a hostile takeover of his former employer, already in motion.

Ethan stood up. Walked to the window. Clearwater spread out below him — gray under the rain, smaller than it had ever looked. Every building down there housed people who had no idea that the broke kid from Greenfield Apartments was standing on the thirty-second floor of the tallest building in the city, looking down.

"Marcus."

"Yes?"

"I need you to understand something." Ethan kept his eyes on the city. "I didn't ask for this. I didn't earn it. Not yet. But I'm not going to waste it, either."

"I wouldn't expect you to."

"There are people in this city who treated me like I was nothing. Some of them had good reasons — I had nothing. Some of them just enjoyed kicking someone who was already down." He turned from the window. "I'm not interested in revenge for its own sake. But I'm not interested in forgetting, either."

Marcus Webb held his gaze. Whatever he saw there seemed to satisfy him.

"The car is waiting downstairs," Marcus said. "I'll take you to Oakwood Bay."
