Chapter 1: The Hallway That Changed Everything
The morning sun spilled through the tall windows of Westbridge High, casting long golden lines across the polished hallway floors. Students moved in clusters, laughter echoing, lockers slamming, footsteps rushing in every direction. It looked like a normal school morning—until Ethan walked in.
Ethan adjusted the strap of his backpack as he stepped through the entrance. His expression was calm, almost distant, like someone who preferred silence over chaos. He wasn’t new to attention, but he never invited it either. People noticed him anyway—maybe because of the way he carried himself, or maybe because rumors always arrived before he did.
“Is that him?” someone whispered near the lockers.
“Yeah… the scholarship guy.”
Ethan heard it but didn’t react. He kept walking.
Westbridge High was supposed to be a fresh start. New school, new rules, no trouble. That’s what he told himself. Trouble, however, had a habit of recognizing him first.
At the far end of the hallway, leaning casually against a row of lockers, stood someone who did not look like he belonged to any rulebook at all.
Liam had his arms crossed, his tie slightly loose, and his uniform jacket hanging open like he didn’t care about school regulations—or anything else, really. His friends surrounded him, laughing at something he had just said, but his eyes were elsewhere.
And then his gaze landed on Ethan.
It wasn’t curiosity. It wasn’t interest.
It was irritation.
Ethan noticed it immediately but didn’t look away. Their eyes locked for a second too long, like two magnets pushing against each other instead of pulling.
“Who’s that?” Liam asked one of his friends, nodding slightly toward Ethan.
“New guy. Heard he got in on scholarship. Top grades from his old school.”
Liam scoffed softly. “Of course.”
Ethan walked past them, ignoring the weight of their stares. But as he passed, Liam deliberately shifted his foot slightly into the path.
A subtle block. Almost invisible. Intentional.
Ethan stopped.
Slowly, he looked down at the foot, then up at Liam.
“You in a hurry?” Liam asked, voice calm but edged with something sharp underneath.
Ethan didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he adjusted his grip on his bag. “Move.”
Just one word.
The hallway around them seemed to quiet without reason. Even the noise felt distant for a moment, like the school itself was waiting.
Liam raised an eyebrow, almost amused. “Or what?”
That question hung between them like a spark waiting for oxygen.
Ethan finally met his gaze fully. “Or you’ll regret standing there.”
A few students nearby gasped softly, sensing tension like electricity in the air.
Liam smiled—but it wasn’t friendly. It was the kind of smile that meant he had already decided something.
“So you’re like that,” Liam said quietly. “Interesting.”
Then, instead of moving away, he stepped closer.
Now they were standing just a few inches apart. Close enough for the tension to feel real, close enough for everyone watching to stop pretending they weren’t watching.
“You think you’re special because you got into this school on grades?” Liam continued. “People like you usually break first.”
Ethan’s expression didn’t change, but something in his eyes hardened slightly.
“And people like you,” Ethan replied, voice low, “usually talk too much.”
That did it.
The silence broke—not with words, but with the sudden burst of reactions from surrounding students. Some laughed nervously. Others whispered faster. Someone even pulled out their phone.
But Liam didn’t step back.
Instead, he leaned in just a little closer and said, “I don’t like you.”
Ethan blinked once. “Good. I wasn’t trying to be liked.”
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then the bell rang.
The sound cut through the tension like a blade.
Ethan finally stepped around him and continued walking, disappearing into the crowd of students heading toward their classes.
But behind him, Liam stayed still, watching him go with an expression that had changed slightly.
Not softer.
Just more interested.
And for the first time that morning, Liam wasn’t bored anymore.
