The Daughter Who Returned

Chapter 4 — The Daughter Who Returned

The doors of the Grand Duchy of Valemont opened. For a moment, nobody moved.Everyone was trying to understand the person standing before them.

The image they had created in their minds over the past few days did not match reality.

They had expected someone difficult to approach.Someone who carried the weight of Nocturne so heavily that it would define every word she spoke.

Instead, Evelyn Veyne stood quietly before them. Her posture was graceful but not arrogant. Her expression was calm but not cold.

She looked like someone who understood she was entering unfamiliar territory, yet she did not appear afraid.

That alone surprised them.

Grand Duke Adrian Valemont stepped forward first.

As the head of House Valemont, he had faced countless situations where emotions could not influence his decisions.

Political conflicts.Military threats.Difficult choices.But this was different.

This was not a matter of the empire. This was a person.

"Evelyn Veyne."

She bowed respectfully.

"Your Grace."

The formality was expected. What was unexpected was what came after.

Evelyn straightened and looked at him.

"I should probably say something meaningful here."

A brief silence followed.Several servants looked surprised.

Evelyn continued.

"Unfortunately, I have spent the entire journey trying to prepare a proper first impression and discovered that most advice about meeting important people is extremely vague."

Cassian, standing behind his father, looked confused.

"What kind of advice?"

Evelyn glanced at him.

"Things like 'be graceful' and 'be memorable.'"

She paused.

"I found both instructions slightly contradictory."

For the first time, Cassian looked like he was struggling not to react.Leon remained composed, but his expression shifted slightly.

Not quite a smile.But close.

Eleanor Valemont observed Evelyn carefully. This was not the behaviour she expected.A person carrying Nocturne was supposed to be cautious.

Defensive.Perhaps even bitter. But Evelyn did not seem like she was trying to prove anything. She was simply speaking.Naturally.

"Welcome to the Grand Duchy of Valemont, Evelyn."

The Grand Duchess's voice was gentle but measured.

"You may call this place your home if you choose."

The words were carefully chosen. Not your home from now on.Not you belong here.A choice.

Evelyn noticed.She always noticed details.

"Thank you, Your Grace."

The introductions began.Leon stepped forward first.

"I am Leon Valemont. The eldest son."

Evelyn nodded.

"The future Grand Duke."

Leon looked slightly surprised.

"You know?"

"I studied the information provided."

"That was thorough."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"I prefer knowing the rules before entering a new game."

That answer caught Isabelle's attention.Interesting.Not because of the words.Because of the way she said them.Evelyn did not sound like someone trying to impress them. She sounded like someone who had learned that preparation mattered.

"I am Isabelle Valemont."

The second child introduced herself.

"Eighteen?"

"Nineteen."

Evelyn nodded.

"My apologies."

Isabelle tilted her head.

"You memorized everyone's information, yet you almost got my age wrong?"

Evelyn looked thoughtful.

"Apparently i make mistakes too."

Evelyn looked apologetic and laughed.

Then Isabelle looked away.

It was subtle. But Cassian noticed. She was amused.

Cassian stepped forward.

"Cassian Valemont."

He smiled.

"And before you ask, no, I am not the serious one."

Leon looked at him.

"Nobody thought you were."

"That was unnecessary."

Evelyn looked between them.

Then said:

"I see."

A pause.

"So this is the family dynamic."

Cassian raised an eyebrow.

"You figured that out already?"

"Not completely."

She glanced at Leon.

"But I believe you provide enough evidence."

For the first time, Cassian laughed.

Finally, Lillian stepped forward. She seemed more hesitant than the others. Not because she disliked Evelyn.Because she understood what it felt like to enter a family that already existed.

"I am Lillian Valemont."

Evelyn smiled.

"The youngest?"

Lillian nodded.

"Yes."

"Then I suppose I should be careful."

Lillian looked confused.

"Why?"

Evelyn lowered her voice slightly.

"Because youngest siblings are usually the most dangerous."

Cassian immediately nodded.

"Correct."

Isabelle looked at him.

"You are not the youngest."

"Exactly. That is why I know."

A small laugh escaped Lillian before she could stop herself. And Evelyn noticed. But she did not comment.

During dinner that evening, the atmosphere remained formal.

Evelyn sat among people whose names had existed only on paper days ago.

The conversation was polite.Questions were asked.Answers were given.Nothing uncomfortable happened. But everyone was observing. How she spoke. How she reacted. How she handled herself.Especially when Nocturne was mentioned.

"Your magic..."

Leon carefully chose his words.

"You have control over it?"

The room became slightly quieter. Not an accusation but a necessary question.

Evelyn understood that.

"Yes."

"Was it difficult?"

A pause. For a moment, something unreadable crossed her expression. Then it disappeared.

"Learning any ability is difficult."

A simple answer.Not a lie.But not the whole truth.

Leon noticed. So did Adrian. But neither pressed.

After dinner, Evelyn was shown to her room. Before leaving, Eleanor stopped at the door.

"You do not need to prove yourself here."

Evelyn looked at her.The statement seemed to surprise her.Eleanor continued.

"You are already here."

A quiet moment passed.

Then Evelyn smiled.

"Thank you."

It was a genuine answer. But Eleanor noticed something.Evelyn respected people easily.Almost too easily. As if kindness was something she valued more than most.

When Evelyn was finally alone, she looked around the unfamiliar room.A room prepared for her.A place waiting for her.Not yet home. Not yet family. But perhaps...

a beginning.

She walked toward the window.Below, the Valemont estate continued as it always had.Knights training.Servants working.A family living their ordinary life. And somewhere among them was a place she had never had before.

A possibility.

Across the estate, Adrian stood with Sebastian.

"Your thoughts?"

Sebastian was quiet.

"She is not what I expected."

Adrian looked toward the east wing.

"No."

A pause.

"Neither did I."

Because Evelyn Veyne carried the power that history feared. But the person standing before them was something much harder to understand.

Not darkness.Not danger.

Simply a girl they had yet to know.....
