Love?

Love?

love...???

(He gave a sad chuckle)

“Love…? That isn’t for me. I don’t even know what it is…”

He sighed, eyes fixed on the water flowing ahead, stars scattered above him. A tear slipped down his cheek.

“I hope everything gets better soon…”

His phone suddenly lit up—Dad calling.

He answered.

Only to hear shouting.

“Why aren’t you home yet, you moron? You don’t even want to stay here or what? Should I throw you out of the house?!”

He didn’t reply. He just listened.

He went home.

And the moment he stepped inside, everything shattered again.

“WHERE ARE YOU?! ISN’T IT ENOUGH THAT YOU MADE YOUR MOTHER DIE?! WHY WERE YOU EVEN BORN?! EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF YOU! YOU’RE USELESS! I WISH YOU WERE DEAD!”

The words cut deeper than anything before.

Suddenly—his father clutched his chest.

A sharp pain.

A heart attack.

Kai froze for a second… then rushed forward, shaking hands dialing for an ambulance. But it was too late.

His only family—gone.

And still… the blame stayed with him.

Days passed.

And kept passing.

He broke a little more each day, until even breathing felt heavy. He started believing it—love wasn’t for him.

But life didn’t stop.

He still went to college.

Still sat at his desk with his head lowered.

Still avoided everyone.

Until one day, while his eyes were closed, he heard the teacher speak:

“We have a new student joining us.”

“Miss Lia,” the professor said, “you go sit beside Kai.”

She walked towards me.

I looked at her.

For the first time ever, someone looked at me like a human—no pity in their eyes, no judgment… just normal. Like I existed the same way everyone else did.

It felt different.

“Hi,” she said softly. “What’s your name?”

I hesitated for a moment. Still, I didn’t let myself hope too much. Because no one really knows what the future holds, right?

“Kai,” I replied.

She nodded like it was the most ordinary thing in the world, like my name didn’t carry anything heavy with it.

Time passed quietly after that.

The class ended.

I stood up quickly, ready to leave like I always do—fast, unnoticed.

But then—

“Hey! Kai!”

Someone called my name from behind.

I paused.

It was her.

Lia.

She caught up slightly, a little breathless but still smiling. “Why are you in such a hurry? At least help me—I need to fill some form. Can you tell me where the reception is?”

I just nodded a little and started walking ahead, expecting her to follow.

She did.

And as I walked beside her, I noticed something.

She wasn’t like the others.

Not empty. Not distant. Not careful with every word like people usually are around me.

She was… alive.

Full of colour.

Like she didn’t belong in my grey world at all.
