The Boy Who Didn't Dream

Chapter Five: The Boy Who Didn't Dream

Julian woke suddenly.

His silver eyes widened.

For a second, fear crossed his face.

Then relief.

Because the first thing he saw was Elara.

"You're here," he whispered.

Not surprised.

Grateful.

As though he had been afraid she wouldn't come.

Elara blinked.

"What are you doing sleeping on my desk?"

Julian sat up slowly.

"I don't know."

He looked genuinely confused.

"I remember going to class… then walking here."

His eyes drifted to the note.

The smile vanished.

"Did you write that?"

"No."

Neither moved.

WELCOME BACK, CHILDREN.

The words felt wrong.

Older than ink.

Older than paper.

Julian reached for the note.

The moment his fingers touched it—

Pain shot through his head.

He gasped.

And suddenly—

A memory.

Rain.

Fire.

A girl crying.

His own voice.

"Run!"

Then darkness.

Julian stumbled backward.

Elara caught him.

Her arms wrapped around him instinctively.

And for a second—

Everything stopped.

His heartbeat.

His fear.

The pain.

Julian looked down.

Elara's hands still held him.

Neither spoke.

Neither moved.

And somehow—

It felt natural.

Like they had done this before.

Many times.

Elara quickly let go.

Her cheeks turned red.

"S-sorry."

Julian smiled softly.

"For what?"

Her heart nearly exploded.

He wasn't teasing.

He looked disappointed she had let go.

Before either could speak—

The note burst into flames.

Both jumped back.

Within seconds, nothing remained except ashes.

Neither understood.

But someone else was watching.

Deep beneath Westbrook University—

Far below the forgotten tunnels—

An old man opened his eyes.

His white hair reached his shoulders.

Ancient blueprints covered the walls around him.

Thousands of clocks ticked.

Every single one stopped.

He smiled.

"At last."

Beside him stood a woman made entirely of shadows.

No face.

No feet touching the ground.

Only glowing eyes.

"The children remember," she whispered.

The old man nodded.

"And so do you."

She looked upward.

Toward the university above.

Toward Julian.

Toward Elara.

And smiled sadly.

Meanwhile—

Washington.

Department of Homeland Security.

Agent Ethan Cross stared at the screen.

Nyx.

Julian Ashford.

Westbrook University.

Three names.

One impossible pattern.

He hated impossible.

"Satellite footage?"

"Blank."

"Security cameras?"

"Corrupted."

"Facial recognition?"

"No matches."

Cross frowned.

"How does an entire university disappear from systems every night?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

He closed the file.

"Prepare a team."

A young agent hesitated.

"Sir… nobody returns from Westbrook assignments."

Cross froze.

"What?"

The room fell silent.

Finally, the director spoke quietly.

"Twenty-three agents."

"Twenty-three disappeared."

"No bodies."

"No evidence."

"No answers."

Cross stared at the file.

Established 1891.

Actual date—

Unknown.

His eyes narrowed.

"Whatever Westbrook is…"

He grabbed his coat.

"I'm going myself."

That night—

Elara couldn't sleep.

Neither could Julian.

At exactly 3:33 a.m., both received the same text.

Unknown sender.

No number.

No signal.

Only four words.

COME TO THE CLOCK TOWER.

And beneath them—

A signature neither had seen before.
