The Version I Kept
Damian (30) - The eldest son of a powerful, old-money real estate or shipping dynasty. He is sharp, highly composed, and used to being in control of his environment.
Personality: Before Elias, Damian was somewhat cold, detached, and deeply burdened by his family's expectations. He carries himself with a quiet authority. He loves fiercely but quietly, expressing his affection through protection, stability, and providing a luxurious life.
The House: The massive estate they live in belongs to him—a modern, architectural masterpiece secluded behind iron gates and surrounded by woods. It's a sanctuary he built specifically to keep the chaotic outside world away from them.
Elias (21) - The youngest heir to a high-society, artistic, or political family. Because he grew up with a silver spoon but plenty of family pressure, he has a bit of a rebellious streak.
He is vibrant, sharp-tongued, fiercely independent, and stubborn. He loves Damian deeply, but he doesn't let Damian control him. He has his own friends, goes out to clubs, and fights back when Damian gets too protective. Their love is passionate, full of banter, and balanced by Elias's fiery independence.
—————
The silence of the estate was usually something Damian paid millions to maintain, but on a Tuesday morning, it felt exceptionally heavy. He woke up to the cold side of the mattress. The sheets on Elias's side were smooth, barely wrinkled.
Damian sat up, rubbing his temples, the memory of the previous night's argument settling like lead in his chest. Elias had wanted to go out to the city clubs with his old university friends. Damian had told him it was a waste of time, dangerous, unnecessary. Elias had laughed-that stubborn, defiant tilt to his chin that Damian both loved and hated-and left anyway, slamming the heavy front door behind him.
Pulling on a silk dressing gown, Damian walked out of the master suite and down the floating marble staircase. The house was a masterpiece of glass and steel, completely isolated behind towering iron gates and surrounded by acres of private woods. A fortress built for two.
As he reached the bottom floor, he heard a faint sound from the kitchen-the clink of a ceramic mug against the marble countertop.
Damian stepped into the sunlit, hyper-modern space. Standing by the island was Elias, his back turned. He was wearing an oversized, cream-colored cable-knit sweater that swallowed his hands. His dark hair was a bit messy, catching the morning light.
"Elias," Damian said, his voice quiet but commanding.
Elias flinched slightly, then turned around. There were no grand declarations, no running across the room. He just looked at Damian, his expression unusually quiet, almost fragile. The defiant spark from the night before was entirely missing from his eyes.
"Hey," Elias whispered, offering a small, slightly tired smile. He held up a mug. "I made coffee. It's... probably not as good as the machine you like, but I tried."
Damian paused, his sharp eyes scanning his lover's face. Elias didn't make coffee. Usually, Elias would sleep in until noon after a night out, then complain until Damian ordered something from the city.
"You're up early," Damian said, walking closer. He reached out, his hand instinctively settling on Elias's waist. Elias didn't pull away or tease him like he usually did; instead, he leaned into the touch, his body relaxing against Damian's chest.
He felt incredibly light.
"I didn't stay out long," Elias said softly, looking down at his mug. "The club was loud. The guys were... annoying. I kept thinking about what you said. About it being a waste of time." He paused, looking up at Damian through his eyelashes with a rare, vulnerable softness.
"You were right. I should have stayed home with you."
Damian's chest tightened, a wave of profound relief washing over him. The friction that usually defined them-Elias's fierce independence rubbing against Damian's need for control-seemed to have evaporated overnight.
"Are you apologizing to me, Elias?" Damian asked, a faint, rare smile touching his lips.
"Maybe," Elias murmured, leaning up to press a soft, lingering kiss against Damian's jawline. His lips felt cool against Damian's skin. "I just want things to be good between us. I don't want to fight anymore."
He wrapped his arms loosely around Damian's neck, resting his head against Damian's shoulder.
It was sweet. It was domestic. It was everything Damian had ever wanted from the stubborn boy.
"Let's just stay inside today," Elias whispered into his shoulder. "Just the two of us."
Damian hesitated.
A week ago, the suggestion would have earned an eye roll and a complaint about cabin fever. Elias hated spending entire weekends hidden away inside the estate. He needed movement, noise, people.
Now, nestled comfortably against him, Elias sounded almost hopeful.
"Since when do you want to stay home?" Damian asked lightly.
Elias stilled.
Only for a second.
Then he pulled back just enough to look at Damian.
"I don't know," he admitted softly. "I think I just like being with you."
There was no teasing smile.
No playful accusation that Damian was turning him into a recluse.
Just simple honesty.
Damian searched his face.
"Are you sure you're feeling alright?"
Elias blinked before smiling faintly.
"I'm happy," he said.
The answer should have reassured him.
Instead, Damian found himself studying Elias a moment longer than necessary.
Then Elias reached up and smoothed a nonexistent crease from Damian's dressing gown.
"You worry too much," Elias murmured. "I told you, didn't I? I don't want to fight anymore."
His fingers brushed against Damian's wrist.
Cool.
Damian ignored the strange sensation settling low in his stomach.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, clouds rolled over the private woods surrounding the estate.
Inside, Elias leaned into his touch with quiet contentment.
For the first time in a long while, Damian thought maybe things were finally becoming easier between them.
He didn't notice his phone vibrating on the kitchen counter.
The screen lit up briefly before dimming again.
