Kingdom of Broken Stars
Thunder rolled across the hills of Durn Hollow.
Rain battered the roof of Rowan's forge while the old wooden chest rested silently upon the workbench.
Neither father nor son moved.
For years Kael had believed his family to be ordinary.
His father was a blacksmith.
His mother had been a kind village healer.
There had been no secrets.
Or so he had believed.
Now everything was changing.
Rowan slowly lifted the silver pendant from the chest.
Unlike Kael's crystal, the pendant hung from a weathered leather cord. Tiny runes circled its edges, glowing faintly beneath the forge fire.
Kael's own crystal began to shine.
The two relics answered each other.
A soft pulse of silver light spread through the room.
Rowan closed his eyes.
"So... it has chosen you."
"What does that mean?" Kael asked.
"It means the day I feared has finally arrived."
Silence returned.
Outside, another bolt of lightning illuminated the village.
Rowan placed the pendant beside the crystal.
"They were once one."
Kael stared at the two objects.
"They belong together?"
"They belonged to your mother's bloodline."
Kael looked at his father in disbelief.
"My mother was not born in Durn Hollow?"
Rowan shook his head.
"No."
"Then where?"
"There was once a kingdom hidden beyond the Frostveil Mountains."
"A kingdom?"
"It no longer exists."
Rowan opened one of the ancient journals.
Its pages were yellow with age.
Across the first page was a symbol identical to the one carved into the crystal.
Beneath it were four words.
The Order of Broken Stars.
Kael whispered the name.
"The Order..."
"They were guardians."
"Guardians of what?"
"The fragments that fell from the heavens."
Kael's heartbeat quickened.
"The broken stars?"
Rowan nodded.
"They believed each fragment carried a piece of something ancient. Not a weapon. Not treasure."
"What then?"
"A memory."
Kael remembered the stranger's words from years ago.
"A memory."
He had not been speaking in riddles.
He had been speaking the truth.
Rowan continued.
"For centuries the Order protected the Star Fragments from kings who desired their power."
"What happened to them?"
"They were betrayed."
The forge seemed colder.
"An emperor marched against them with ten thousand soldiers."
"They lost?"
"No."
Kael frowned.
"Then why did they disappear?"
Rowan stared into the flames.
"Because something far worse than an army came."
The fire flickered violently.
For a heartbeat its flames turned silver.
Rowan immediately closed the journal.
"We cannot speak its true name."
"Why?"
"Names have power."
The room fell silent once more.
At last Rowan reached beneath the chest and removed a wrapped bundle.
Slowly he unfolded the cloth.
Inside rested a sword.
Its blade was dark steel, but countless silver lines ran through the metal like cracks across the night sky.
Kael had never seen craftsmanship like it.
"This belonged to your grandfather."
"I never knew him."
"You were never meant to."
"He died?"
"No."
Rowan's voice became quiet.
"He disappeared protecting your mother."
Kael's hands tightened.
"My entire life has been built on secrets."
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Before Kael could answer, a loud scream echoed from outside.
Both men rushed toward the forge doors.
Villagers were running toward the ancient oak.
The silver leaves glowed like moonlight.
Its enormous branches twisted against the wind although no storm touched them.
Children cried.
Animals fled.
An old woman pointed toward the tree with trembling hands.
"The roots..."
The earth beneath the oak cracked open.
Silver light poured from the ground.
Then something rose.
Not a monster.
Not a man.
A sword.
Its blade emerged inch by inch from the earth as though the world itself were offering it to someone.
Every villager watched in stunned silence.
No one dared move.
Then the sword turned.
Its tip pointed directly at Kael.
A voice echoed through every mind.
"Starborn... claim what is yours."
The wind stopped.
Even the rain froze for a single impossible moment.
Kael took one step forward.
He did not know whether he was walking toward his destiny...
...or toward the beginning of a war that would consume every kingdom beneath the broken stars.
