the ghost in library Chapter 5: Night One - The Drowning Ghost

The bell rang. Five times.

Then it rang again. Six times.

Jennifer’s blood turned to ice.

Asher stopped walking. His whole body went rigid.

“That’s not possible,” he whispered. “The bell only rings seven times... when Night begins.”

“Then why is it ringing now?” Maya asked, her voice trembling.

Asher didn’t answer. He grabbed Jennifer’s arm and pulled her back. “Run. Now.”

“Where?” Ethan shouted.

“Anywhere but here!”

The bell rang one last time. Seven times.

The ground shook.

From the black stone street, water started rising. Not normal water. Black. Thick. It smelled like rot and old tears. It came from nowhere, flooding the street in seconds, up to their ankles.

“What the hell is this?” Lucas yelled.

The water rose higher. Up to their knees. Up to their waists.

And then she came.

From the depths of the black water, a woman rose slowly. Her hair was long, white, dripping with slime. Her dress was torn and heavy, stuck to her skin like a second layer of rot. Her eyes... she had no eyes. Just empty, drowning holes.

Water poured from her mouth when she opened it. But no sound came out. Only bubbles.

“The Drowning Ghost,” Asher said, his voice deadly calm. “First of the seven.”

The ghost drifted toward them, leaving a trail of black water behind her. Every step she took, the water rose higher.

“Jennifer,” Asher said without looking at her. “I need you to tell me one secret. Any secret. Right now.”

“What?” Jennifer stared at him, horrified.

“That’s the rule,” Asher snapped. “One secret, or she takes all of you.”

Jennifer’s mind went blank. Her past flashed before her eyes. Lies. Truths. Things she buried deep.

“I... I stole money from my father when I was 15,” she whispered quickly. “For my sick friend’s treatment. He never found out.”

The ghost stopped. Her empty eyes turned toward Jennifer. The water around her feet stopped rising.

For 2 seconds, silence.

Then the ghost screamed.

It wasn’t a human sound. It was the sound of someone drowning underwater for hours. The sound of lungs filling with black water. The sound of death.

The street cracked open. Black hands shot out of the water, grabbing at Maya’s legs, Ethan’s arms, Lucas’s neck.

“Don’t let them touch you!” Asher shouted. He stepped forward, between the ghost and Jennifer.

The Drowning Ghost lunged.

Asher moved faster than Jennifer had ever seen anyone move. He pulled a small silver dagger from his coat - the same dagger shaped like a lock. He slashed it through the air.

A line of white light cut through the black water.

The ghost shrieked and stumbled back. Where the light touched her, her skin started burning. Smoke rose from her body.

“You don’t get to touch them,” Asher growled. His gray eyes were no longer calm. They were stormy. Dangerous. “Not her. Not ever.”

The ghost screamed again and lunged at him. This time Asher didn’t dodge. He grabbed her face with one hand and pushed the silver dagger into her chest.

Black water exploded everywhere.

The ghost dissolved into mist. The water receded instantly, like it was never there. The street was dry again. The bell stopped ringing.

Silence.

Jennifer was breathing hard. Her friends were shaking, hugging each other. Lucas had tears in his eyes.

Asher stood there, his back to them, the dagger still in his hand. Water dripped from his coat. But not normal water. Black water.

Jennifer walked to him slowly. “You... you saved us.”

Asher didn’t turn around. “I told you. I’m trying to keep you alive.”

“But how did you...”

“Don’t ask questions you’re not ready for,” he cut her off. His voice was tired now. Not dangerous. Just tired.

He turned his head slightly. Just enough for Jennifer to see his profile. His jaw was clenched. His hand holding the dagger was shaking.

“Night One is over,” he said quietly. “You survived. But there are six more nights. Six more ghosts. And each one is worse than the last.”

Jennifer swallowed. “And my secret? Did it work?”

Asher finally looked at her. His gray eyes met hers.

“Yes,” he said softly. “For now. But Jennifer... the ghosts don’t want small secrets. Next time, they’ll want the ones that break you.”

The air grew cold again. In the distance, another bell rang. Just once.

Not seven times. Just one.

A warning.

Jennifer felt Asher’s hand brush against hers for a second before he pulled away.

“Come on,” he said. “We need to move before Night Two finds us.”

As they walked away from the empty street, Jennifer looked back once.

In the puddle of water left behind, she saw a reflection. Not her own.

The Drowning Ghost was still watching. Smiling.

Night One was over.

But the game had only just begun.
