The Vanishing

The crimson curtains slowly drifted apart.

A hush settled over the enormous tent.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the brightly lit stage.

Then—

A puff of shimmering silver smoke burst into the air.

Out of it stepped a tall man dressed in flowing robes of deep purple embroidered with tiny golden stars. A matching top hat rested neatly upon his silver-streaked hair, and a polished ebony cane twirled effortlessly between his fingers.

The audience erupted into applause.

The magician swept into a graceful bow.

"Ladies and gentlemen..." he announced, his smooth voice carrying effortlessly through the tent.

"Boys and girls..."

"Welcome..."

He smiled.

"To a night you shall never forget."

The orchestra struck a cheerful tune.

The performance began.

At first, the tricks were simple.

Or at least...

They looked simple.

Silk scarves poured endlessly from his sleeve.

Each one changed color as it floated through the air.

Blue.

Red.

Gold.

Emerald green.

The children clapped excitedly.

Next, he borrowed a coin from an elderly gentleman sitting near the front.

He tossed it into the air.

It vanished.

The audience gasped.

A moment later, he reached behind a little boy's ear.

"Looking for this?"

The coin glittered between his fingers.

The tent filled with laughter.

"How did he do that?" Tobi whispered.

Nyra never looked away from the stage.

"Magic," she whispered back.

The magician continued.

Candles floated through the air without strings.

Playing cards danced like tiny birds.

A bouquet of white roses suddenly became hundreds of fluttering butterflies that circled the tent before disappearing into sparkling dust.

Each trick seemed more impossible than the last.

Even Mrs. Hodges found herself smiling.

For a little while...

Everyone forgot about the outside world.

Then the magician raised one hand.

The music faded.

Silence returned.

"For my final performance..." he announced.

"I shall require one brave volunteer."

Excited murmurs spread through the audience.

Hands shot into the air.

"Me!"

"Pick me!"

"Over here!"

The magician smiled knowingly.

He picked up a small brass device resting on a nearby table.

A brilliant white spotlight swept slowly across the audience.

It drifted over laughing children.

Past smiling parents.

Across rows of eager faces.

Then...

It stopped.

Directly on Nyra.

For half a heartbeat she simply blinked.

Then realization struck.

"Me?!"

She practically bounced off the bench.

"Me! Me! Me!"

Before Mrs. Hodges could say a word, Nyra had already squeezed past Meera and Tobi, clutching Biscuit tightly against her chest.

The audience applauded as she hurried toward the stage.

The magician knelt until they were eye level.

"And what is your name, little adventurer?"

Nyra beamed.

"Nyra!"

"A wonderful name."

He smiled warmly.

"Tell me, Nyra..."

"Do you trust me?"

She nodded without hesitation.

"Uh-huh!"

"Excellent."

He gestured toward a beautifully painted wooden cabinet standing center stage.

Golden stars and silver moons decorated every side.

Its polished doors gleamed beneath the lantern light.

"Would you like to help me perform one last miracle?"

Nyra's eyes sparkled.

"Yes!"

The audience laughed softly.

She stepped inside the cabinet without the slightest hint of fear.

Still hugging Biscuit.

The magician gently closed the doors.

Click.

He circled the cabinet once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then he lifted his wand.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

He smiled confidently.

"Watch carefully."

The wand tapped the cabinet.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

"Abracadabra!"

With a dramatic flourish, he threw the doors wide open.

The cabinet...

Was empty.

The audience erupted into thunderous applause.

Children cheered.

Parents laughed.

Even Meera clapped.

"She's going to pop out behind us," Tobi whispered excitedly.

The magician bowed proudly.

Everything was going exactly as planned.

Or so everyone believed.

He raised his wand again.

"And now..."

He smiled.

"To bring our young volunteer back."

He tapped the cabinet.

Nothing happened.

The smile remained on his face.

He tapped it again.

Still nothing.

A few audience members chuckled.

Someone whispered,

"He's building suspense."

The magician laughed politely.

"One moment..."

His voice sounded almost normal.

Almost.

But the fingers gripping his wand had begun to tremble.

Very subtly.

He tapped the cabinet again.

Nothing.

His smile faltered.

Only for an instant.

Mrs. Hodges noticed.

So did Meera.

Something wasn't right.

The magician slowly stepped behind the cabinet where the audience couldn't clearly see him.

His breathing quickened.

"No..." he whispered under his breath.

His shaking hand reached inside his coat.

He pulled out a small leather-bound book.

Its cover was cracked with age.

The corners had worn soft from years of use.

He flipped frantically through its pages.

His lips moved silently.

Searching.

Reading.

Trying to remember.

Finally he stopped.

He raised his wand once more.

This time he whispered words no one in the audience could hear.

The air around the cabinet shimmered faintly.

Then...

Nothing.

The cabinet remained empty.

The magician stared.

Color slowly drained from his face.

"Impossible..." he breathed.

Then—

A scream pierced the tent.

Not from the stage.

From somewhere behind the audience.

"Fire!"

Every head turned.

Bright orange flames had begun climbing one side of the enormous canvas wall.

A lantern had fallen.

The fabric caught instantly.

Smoke rolled upward toward the ceiling.

Another scream echoed.

Then another.

Panic spread faster than the flames.

People leaped from their benches.

Children cried.

Parents shouted names.

Wood scraped loudly across the floor.

"Everyone outside!" someone yelled.

"Run!"

Mrs. Hodges was already moving.

"Meera! Tobi! Emma! Stay together!"

She grabbed the nearest frightened child and hurried toward the exit.

"Don't let go of each other's hands!"

The tent dissolved into complete chaos.

In the confusion...

The magician looked down.

His leather spellbook had slipped from his trembling hands.

It landed near the edge of the growing fire.

For one frozen moment...

He simply stared at it.

His entire life's work.

Every secret.

Every spell.

Every note.

Flames crept closer.

Smoke thickened.

His hand twitched.

Should he save the book?

Or save himself?

Another support beam cracked overhead.

The answer came instantly.

He turned.

And ran.

His purple robes disappeared through a side flap of the tent.

The little leather book remained where it had fallen.

Its pages curled from the heat.

The edges blackened.

Then...

They caught fire.

Outside, the cool night air was filled with shouting and confusion.

People stumbled away from the burning tent, coughing through the smoke.

Mrs. Hodges counted the children again and again.

"Twenty-seven..."

She looked around wildly.

"Twenty-eight..."

Her heart pounded.

"Twenty-nine..."

She froze.

No.

No...

There should have been thirty.

"Nyra?" she called.

No answer.

"Nyra!"

Meera's face turned white.

"Mrs. Hodges..." she whispered.

"She never came back."

The words hung in the air.

Cold.

Impossible.

Terrifying.

Behind them, the great purple tent collapsed into a roaring sea of flames.

And somewhere...

Far beyond the burning canvas.

A little girl named Nyra opened her eyes in a place that did not belong to her world.
