Chapter 2: The Red File

The penthouse of the Vance Tower looked less like an office and more like a high-tech fortress. Glass walls offered a panoramic view of the city’s glittering skyline, but the atmosphere inside was suffocatingly cold.

Killian Vance sat behind a massive desk of polished obsidian, a sleek silver laptop open before him.

"You have exactly five minutes, Miss Hayes," Killian said, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm. He slid the laptop across the desk toward me. "The back-door code. Show me."

My fingers trembled as I reached for the keyboard. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.

[DING! NOVICE ANALYST PERK ACTIVATED.][DATA RETENTION: 100%. PATTERN RECOGNITION: MAX.]

As my fingers touched the keys, a sudden wave of absolute clarity washed over me. The complex coding on the screen, which should have looked like gibberish to a data entry clerk, suddenly made perfect sense. The system perk was working. I bypassed three security firewalls with practiced ease, typing in the hidden script the author had detailed in chapter twelve of the book.

Enter.

A hidden directory popped up on the screen, flashing a violent crimson. It contained encrypted logs detailing every single black-market transaction Vance Global had made over the last six months.

Killian leaned forward, his icy eyes widening just a fraction. The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees. "The mole...

"It’s your chief of security, Marcus," I whispered, the adrenaline making my voice shake. "He’s been copying your ledger and feeding it directly to the FBI task force."

Before Killian could even respond, the double doors of the penthouse burst open. Two guards dragged a bloody, bruised man into the room—Marcus. He had been intercepted trying to flee the building.

"Sir! I swear, she's lying!" Marcus gasped, spitting blood onto the pristine white rug. "She’s the one who brought the drive into the building! She's the mole!"

Killian didn't look at Marcus. He looked at me, his gaze tracking the sweat dripping down my temple. He stood up, walking slowly around the desk until he was standing right in front of me. He drew his knife, the silver blade catching the harsh overhead lights.

"Marcus has served my family for ten years," Killian murmured, testing the edge of the blade with his thumb. "You have been a low-level courier for three months. Why should I believe a ghost over a brother-in-arms?"

[DING! EMERGENCY MISSION ACTIVATED!][MISSION NAME: The Ultimate Betrayal][OBJECTIVE: Prove Marcus is the mole by revealing his secret contact.]

[SHOCKING TRUTH INTEGRATION: Connect the mole to the 'Heroine.']

[TIME LIMIT: 30 Seconds.]

[SUCCESS REWARD: +300 Survival Points, Unlock 'Lie Detector' Eye.]

[FAILURE PENALTY: Death by exsanguination.]

I swallowed hard. I knew who Marcus’s handler was. In the original novel, Marcus was working with the brilliant, pure-hearted FBI heroine, Agent Clara Evans. But the system's text was flashing in an angry red, revealing a piece of lore the author had never written in the public chapters.

I looked at the text on the holographic screen, and my breath completely jammed in my throat.

No. That’s impossible.

"Ten seconds, Stella," Killian whispered, placing the cold tip of the blade directly against the hollow of my throat. "Speak."

"Marcus isn't just working with the FBI," I choked out, staring directly into Killian’s terrifying eyes. "His handler isn't a random agent. It’s Agent Clara Evans. The woman you've been investigating for months."

Killian's expression didn't change, but the knife pressed a millimeter deeper, drawing a tiny bead of blood. "Everyone knows she is leading the task force against me."

"But you don't know who she actually is," I gasped, the words tumbling out in a desperate rush. "Check Marcus's phone logs for the encrypted contact named 'Orchid.' Clara Evans isn't a righteous federal agent fighting crime, Killian. She is your deceased older brother's secret fiancé. And she didn't join the FBI to lock you up—she joined to systematically murder every single member of the Vance family to avenge his death."

The penthouse fell into a dead, horrifying silence.

Marcus let out a strangled, terrified gasp, his face turning entirely pale. His reaction alone confirmed the absolute truth of my words.

Killian froze. The mask of the cold, untouchable villain completely shattered. For a split second, pure, unadulterated shock crossed his features, followed immediately by a wave of murderous, dark rage so intense it made my knees buckle. The saintly, perfect heroine of the novel... was actually a vengeful, undercover assassin out for blood.

[DING!]

[EMERGENCY MISSION: SUCCESS!]

[PLOT DERAILED BY 15%. THE HEROINE'S TRUE IDENTITY HAS BEEN EXPOSED EARLY.]

[REWARDS ISSUED: +300 Survival Points. 'Lie Detector' Eye Activated.]

Killian slowly lowered the knife from my throat. He didn't look at Marcus, who was now weeping and begging for mercy on the floor. Instead, Killian turned his full, terrifying attention back to me.

He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his breath warm against my cheek. His icy eyes scanned my face, searching every micro-expression with a hyper-fixated, dangerous intensity.

"You are a Level 1 clerk," Killian whispered, his voice dangerously dark, yet laced with a twisted, newfound fascination. "A nobody. Yet you know secrets that my own intelligence team couldn't find in five years."

He reached out, his gloved fingers gently brushing away the single drop of blood his knife had drawn from my neck. The gesture was surprisingly tender, making it ten times more terrifying.

"Who... or what... are you, Stella Hayes?" he murmured, a dark, slow smile twisting his lips for the very first time. "Because I don't think I can ever let you leave this room."

I stared back at him, my system screen flashing with a new notification in the background. I had saved my life for the second time, but I had just turned the story's main villain into a man obsessed with my existence.

The plot was broken, and I was trapped right in the center of the shards.
