Chapter 5: The Morning After the Storm

The golden fire in the hearth had died down to a soft, simmering amber glow by the time the heavy silence of the inner sanctum shifted.

Jungkook woke up slowly, his body feeling heavier and warmer than it ever had in his life. The charcoal silk sheets were tangled around his waist, and the skin of his chest and shoulders felt sensitive, tingling with the residual memory of a cold, electric touch that had burned hotter than fire throughout the night.

He didn't move. He couldn't.

Taehyung was still asleep beside him. The feared Dark God, who usually held himself with the rigid, untouchable posture of an obsidian statue, was currently curled on his side, his face buried in the crook of Jungkook’s neck. One of Taehyung’s massive, pale arms was wrapped securely around Jungkook’s waist, pinning the human flush against his broad chest as if anchoring himself to the only warm thing in existence.

Without his armor and his icy mask, Taehyung looked strikingly human, almost vulnerable. The dark, wavy strands of his hair fell across his closed eyes, and his long eyelashes cast soft shadows against his sharp cheekbones.

Jungkook breathed out a quiet, shaky breath, trying not to disturb the god. His heart gave a strange, complicated flutter. The rough, frantic kisses of the previous night had quickly dissolved into something incredibly intense, raw, and deeply private. Taehyung had taken him with a desperate, silent hunger—sometimes rough and possessive, his fingers gripping Jungkook’s hips tightly enough to leave faint marks, and sometimes so soft and reverent it made Jungkook’s chest ache. Every time their skin had met, the golden energy of Jungkook’s soul had surged, mingling with Taehyung’s dark, icy magic until the boundaries between mortal and god felt completely erased.

*I was supposed to trick him,* Jungkook thought, staring at the dark ceiling. *I was supposed to make him love me so I could take the crown and go home.*

His eyes drifted across the dim room to the high pedestal where the Sovereign’s crown sat, its violet gem pulsing faintly in the dark. It was right there. He was closer to it than he had ever been. Taehyung trusted him enough to sleep soundly in his arms.

Yet, looking back down at the lonely god holding him so tightly, the thought of stealing it made Jungkook feel physically sick. He didn't want to see Taehyung's crimson eyes fill with the cold betrayal of a pawn turning on its master. He was falling. Deeply, terrifyingly falling for the very monster he was sent to seduce.

Taehyung stirred, a low, gravelly murmur vibrating in his chest. His grip on Jungkook’s waist tightened, pulling him even closer until there wasn't a single millimeter of space between them.

Taehyung’s eyes fluttered open, the crimson iris soft and hazy with sleep before clarity flooded them. He blinked, looking down at Jungkook, who was staring back at him with big, round, honest eyes.

For a moment, a flash of ancient habit crossed Taehyung’s face—the instinct to pull away, to put up the walls, to act like the detached Sovereign. But Jungkook didn't let him. Jungkook reached out from beneath the silk sheets, his warm hand gently cupping Taehyung’s cheek, his thumb tracing the sharp line of his cheekbone.

"Good morning," Jungkook whispered softly, a small, genuine smile gracing his lips.

Taehyung closed his eyes for a second, leaning heavily into the warmth of Jungkook's palm. The pure energy of the Blessing Vessel purred between them, sweet and grounding. When he opened his eyes again, the coldness was completely gone, replaced by a deep, intense gravity.

"You are still here," Taehyung noted, his voice deep and raspy from sleep. He reached up, his long, cool fingers wrapping around Jungkook’s wrist, but he didn't pull the hand away from his face. Instead, he brought Jungkook’s palm to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss right into the center of his hand. "I expected you to be cowering across the room after last night."

Jungkook flushed a bright, pretty pink, but he didn't look away. "I told you. I'm not afraid of you, Taehyung. And I'm not going anywhere."

Taehyung’s gaze darkened with a sudden, heavy emotion. He leaned down, his lips brushing against Jungkook’s forehead, then down the bridge of his nose, before stopping just a breath away from his mouth. "You speak with the foolish bravery of a mortal who does not understand what he has done," Taehyung murmured against his lips. "By letting me touch you... by bonding our energies last night... you have made yourself the center of my world, Jungkook. If the High Court tries to take you now, I will burn the sky to ash to keep you."

Before Jungkook could process the raw weight of that promise, Taehyung captured his lips in a sweet, slow, and incredibly deep kiss. It wasn't the frantic, chaotic clash of the night before; it was a quiet, possessive claim, full of a soft warmth that Jungkook didn't know a Dark God could possess. Jungkook whimpered softly, his fingers tangling in Taehyung’s silky dark hair, pulling him down to drink in the taste of him.

The gentle moment was abruptly shattered by a loud, echoing crash from the outer corridor, followed by a familiar, high-pitched shout.

"I don't care if they’re sleeping, Yoongi! The border arrays are melting and I need to know if our Lord is alive or if he successfully ate the human!"

Taehyung pulled back from the kiss, a heavy, irritated sigh escaping his lips. The crimson in his eyes flared with annoyance as the heavy stone doors of the sanctum vibrated under an aggressive knock.

"Jimin," Taehyung growled under his breath, his voice laced with pure murder.

Jungkook couldn't help it; he let out a bright, melodic laugh, the sound ringing beautifully through the dark room. He pushed against Taehyung’s chest playfully. "You should probably let them in before your fox demon breaks your door."

Taehyung stared at Jungkook’s laughing face, his expression softening into a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his entire dangerous demeanor. "He will pay for this," Taehyung muttered, but he slid out of the bed, pulling a heavy black silk robe over his broad shoulders and adjusting his hair.

With a wave of his hand, the shadow barrier dissolved, and the stone doors swung open.

Jimin practically stumbled into the room, his silver-lilac hair a wild mess, his orange fox ears twitching frantically. Right behind him was Yoongi, looking equally disheveled, his dark armor missing its chest piece, revealing a matching set of faint scratch marks on his collarbone that told a very clear story about how *he* had spent his night during the battlefield lockdown.

"Taehyung, thank the dark—oh," Jimin stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Taehyung’s loose robe to the bed, where Jungkook was sitting up, holding the charcoal sheets up to his chest, his shoulders covered in small, telltale dark marks.

A massive, wicked grin split across Jimin’s face, his fox tail wagging furiously behind him. "Well, well, well. Look who finally decided to taste the nectar."

"Jimin," Yoongi warned, his deep voice carrying a tired but dangerous edge as he grabbed the back of Jimin’s robe to pull him into line. "Focus. Lord Namjoon sent us."

Yoongi looked at Taehyung, his expression turning dead serious. "The High Court’s vanguard retreated, but it was a feint. Namjoon decoded the energy signatures they left at the river. They weren't trying to capture Jungkook last night."

Taehyung’s posture instantly went cold, the air in the room dropping several degrees. "What were they doing?"

Yoongi looked past Taehyung, his dark eyes locking onto Jungkook, who shrank back slightly against the pillows. "They used the distraction to plant a tracking curse directly onto the outer wards of the palace. They don't need to break in anymore, Taehyung. They already know exactly what the Blessing Vessel is doing—and they are mobilizing the main celestial army to take him by force."

The game had just turned into an all-out war, and time was running out.
