Now into the story
Duke University was beautiful in the fall.
Students hurried across campus with coffee in hand while orange leaves covered the sidewalks. For most people, college was exciting. For Lee Min, it was exhausting.
At 21 years old, he was in his second semester studying business while working two part-time jobs just to pay rent. He shared a small apartment with his two childhood best friends, Min-so and Jin-sa. The three had known each other since elementary school, and after moving away from home for college, they promised they would always look after one another.
“Min, you’re going to be late again,” Min-so called from the kitchen.
Lee Min grabbed a piece of toast.
“I know! My shift ended at two this morning.”
Jin-sa laughed.
“Maybe if you stopped saying yes every time your manager asked you to cover someone else’s shift.”
“I like paying rent,” Lee Min replied dramatically before running out the door.
⸻
Everyone on campus knew there were three students you couldn’t ignore.
Ye-jun.
Ha-jun.
Do-yun.
The three seniors were always together. They came from wealthy families, drove expensive cars, and somehow managed to be at the center of every rumor on campus.
Girls constantly confessed to them.
Students whispered whenever they walked by.
Some people admired them.
Others avoided them completely.
Ye-jun was the most famous of the three.
His father owned several successful companies and sat on the university’s board of directors. Because of that, people assumed Ye-jun had everything handed to him.
What they didn’t know was that he hated the attention.
He rarely smiled, rarely spoke unless necessary, and preferred spending his free time in the library instead of at parties.
