The sweet, heavy scent of the sleeping gas vanished, replaced by the sharp, medicinal smell of leather and clean sheets.
Lily’s eyes fluttered open. Her head throbbed with a dull ache, and the world spun in blurred shades of gray and black. She wasn't in the cold titanium vault anymore.
She was lying on a massive, low-profile bed draped in silk sheets. The room was vast, minimalist, and dark, lit only by the faint glow of the Tokyo skyline through floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
"Don't move too fast. The sedative is still in your system."
Lily gasped, sitting up abruptly. Her eyes adjusted to the shadows. Ren was sitting in a leather armchair just a few feet away from the bed. His wet white shirt was gone, replaced by a loose, black silk robe that hung open at his chest, revealing the lean, muscular definition of his torso and the deep, angry bruise on his collarbone. He was holding a glass of amber liquid, his expression unreadable.
"Where are we?" Lily asked, her voice raspy. She realized she was still wearing her white blouse, though the top two buttons had been undone so she could breathe easier. Her cheeks instantly flushed with heat. "Did you...?"
"My private penthouse," Ren said, his voice a low, soothing vibration in the quiet room. He stood up, setting his glass down, and walked slowly toward the edge of the bed. "And no. I didn't change your clothes. My personal physician handled your medical care. I only carried you here."
He sat on the edge of the mattress, the weight of his body shifting the sheets. He leaned in close, his shadow enveloping her entirely. The raw, intimate proximity made Lily’s heart race faster than the drug ever could.
"You should be furious with me, Lily," Ren murmured, reaching out. His long, bare fingers—no longer hidden by his leather gloves—wrapped gently around her ankle under the covers, his touch burning hot against her skin. "Your brother is alive, and he is trying to destroy my family. You came to my company to find a victim, but you found a criminal instead."
Lily looked down at his hand on her ankle, then forced herself to meet his piercing gray eyes. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, but her voice was laced with a fierce, stubborn conviction.
"My brother would never handle a weapon. He was an accountant, Ren. If he is doing this, someone is pulling his strings from the inside," Lily whispered. She slid closer to him on the bed, her knees brushing against his thigh. "And I don't care who he is to the rest of the world. Right now, the only person I trust... is the man who shielded me from a bullet."
Ren’s eyes darkened, a flash of raw emotion breaking through his icy corporate armor. A low, ragged breath escaped his lips.
"You are incredibly foolish, Lily," he growled softly.
He lunged forward, his hands gripping her waist as he pinned her down against the soft silk pillows. He loomed over her, his chest pressing against hers, his lips hovering mere millimeters from her mouth. The sheer intensity of his gaze was intoxicating.
"I am a mafia boss. I have blood on my hands, and I have enemies at every corner of this city," Ren whispered, his thumb sliding up to caress her cheek, his touch possessive and fiercely protective. "If you stay by my side, I will drag you directly into hell with me."
"Then drag me," Lily breathed, her hands sliding up his bare chest, her fingers curling into his blonde hair, pulling him down to bridge the final, torturous distance between them. "Just don't leave me behind."
Ren’s restraint finally snapped. He leaned down, crushing his lips against hers in a deep, fierce, and fiercely passionate kiss that burned away the cold remnants of the rain outside. It was a chaotic mix of desperation, hunger, and a silent vow to protect her against the entire world.
As they broke away for air, the hidden smartphone on the nightstand vibrated in the dark.
Ren didn't look away from Lily's flushed face as he swiped the screen open on speaker. A distorted, chillingly familiar voice echoed through the bedroom.
"Did you enjoy the nap, Little Ishida?" the voice chuckled darkly from the speaker. "Tell your new secretary that her brother says hello. And tell her... we're coming to take back what belongs to us."
Lily froze, her eyes widening in horror as she recognized her brother's voice. Ren’s grip on her waist tightened, his eyes turning to absolute, deadly pitch black.
