A Heart That Forgot How to Beat

The days that followed felt endless.

Every morning, I woke up hoping the pain would be smaller than it had been the day before. Instead, it greeted me the moment I opened my eyes. It was as if my heart refused to accept that everything we had built was already gone.

School became the hardest place to be.

Every hallway reminded me of him. Every classroom held a memory. Every corner of the campus seemed to whisper his name. I avoided the places we used to spend time together, but no matter where I went, memories always found me.

My classmates noticed the change.

"You've been so quiet lately," one of them said.

I simply smiled and nodded.

It was easier than explaining the truth.

People often think heartbreak is just sadness. They imagine a few tears, a few sleepless nights, and then everything goes back to normal.

They don't see the invisible wounds.

They don't see how difficult it becomes to eat, to sleep, to laugh, or even to get out of bed. They don't understand how someone can feel completely exhausted without doing anything at all.

I stopped participating in class discussions. My grades slowly began to fall. Subjects I once enjoyed became impossible to understand because my mind was always somewhere else.

One afternoon, our teacher handed back our exam papers.

I stared at the failing grade written in red ink.

Just a few months ago, I had been one of the top students in class.

Now, I could barely recognize myself.

After school, Mia caught up with me before I could leave.

"Let's grab something to eat," she said with a hopeful smile.

I shook my head.

"I'm not hungry."

"You've been saying that every day."

"I'm just tired."

She looked at me for a long moment before speaking again.

"You know... you don't have to carry everything by yourself."

Her words almost broke me.

For a second, I wanted to tell her everything—to cry on her shoulder and admit how much I was hurting.

But instead, I smiled.

"I'll be okay."

It had become my favorite lie.

When I arrived home, I went straight to my room and opened my notebook. I tried to study, but the words on the pages blurred together. My mind wandered back to him.

I wondered if he missed me.

I wondered if he regretted what he had done.

Then I caught myself.

Why was I still worrying about someone who had already chosen to let me go?

That night, I looked out my bedroom window.

The sky was covered with dark clouds, and a gentle rain began to fall.

I watched the raindrops slide down the glass, each one disappearing before it reached the bottom.

They reminded me of people.

Some enter our lives quietly.

Some leave without warning.

And no matter how tightly we try to hold on, some are never meant to stay.

As the rain continued outside, I hugged my knees close to my chest and made a silent promise.

If my heart ever learned how to love again...

I hoped the next person would choose me every single day.

Because I never wanted to feel this kind of loneliness again.
