### **Episode 2: Rules of Engagement**

> "Do not mistake my presence in your home for compliance, Ethan. We share a roof, not a life."

The penthouse smelled of lemon wax, silence, and Ethan’s absolute need for control. Situated on the forty-second floor overlooking the city’s financial district, the space was a masterclass in minimalism. Every piece of furniture was angular; every surface was devoid of personal clutter. It was a fortress designed to keep the world out, but as of three o'clock that Tuesday afternoon, the perimeter had been breached.

Julian’s arrival was less of a move-in and more of a hostile takeover. Three oversized canvas paintings, still smelling faintly of turpentine and oil, leaned against the pristine white marble island in the kitchen. A chaotic stack of art history books rested precariously on a designer leather chair.

Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his arms crossed over his chest, watching Julian drop a duffel bag onto the hardwood floor with a heavy thud.

"The movers will bring the rest of my studio equipment tomorrow," Julian said, running a hand through his perpetually messy dark hair. He didn't look at Ethan; instead, his eyes scanned the apartment with a mixture of amusement and disdain. "Lovely place you have here. It looks like a high-end dentist's waiting room."

"It's clean, quiet, and structured," Ethan replied, his voice clipping each word perfectly. "Three things I intend to maintain. Your bedroom is the second door on the left down the gallery hallway. I've already had the cleaning staff clear out the closet."

Julian chuckled, a low, dry sound that grated on Ethan’s nerves. He walked over to the kitchen island, tracing a finger along the edge of an abstract painting of deep crimson and midnight blue. "Don't worry, Prosecutor. I have no intention of bleeding into your monochrome paradise. I’ll keep my mess confined to my quarters."

"See that you do," Ethan said, walking over to hand Julian a sleek, black keycard and a bound folder. "This is the security protocol for the building, the media response guidelines drafted by my public relations team, and a schedule of the mandatory dinners we must attend over the next quarter. Our first public appearance is the Supreme Court Justice’s charity gala this Friday."

Julian didn't take the folder. He simply stared at Ethan, his expression hardening. "I can read a calendar, Ethan. You don't need to manage me like one of your defendants."

"If you acted less like a liability, I wouldn't have to," Ethan retorted, stepping closer. The air between them instantly charged with a sharp, defensive heat. "Your little stunt at the docks last month nearly cost your family a multi-million dollar zoning permit. If you repeat that kind of reckless behavior while married to a federal prosecutor, it won't just be your family's reputation on the line. It will be my career.

Julian’s jaw tightened. The misunderstanding was already setting its roots deep; Ethan saw a spoiled rich boy throwing tantrums, entirely blind to the fact that Julian’s 'stunt' had been a desperate attempt to stop his brother from bulldozing a community art center. Julian swallowed the truth, letting the mask of defiance slip back into place.

"Then I suggest you keep your eyes on your paperwork, and off of me," Julian whispered, snatching the folder from Ethan’s hand with a bitter smile. He turned on his heel and walked down the hall, slamming his bedroom door shut.

Ethan stood alone in the quiet kitchen, the phantom heat of their argument still lingering in the air.
