Nikolai stopped a respectful five feet away. Up close, without the fever of the rut, the mafia Don was staggering. He was a wall of muscle, dressed in a flawless charcoal suit, his sharp jaw closely shaved, and his grey eyes dark with a complex mix of anger and profound guilt.
"Sasha," Nikolai said. His voice was a low, gravelly rumble, but he intentionally softened the edge of it.
Sasha swallowed hard, his hands tightly gripping the fabric of his oversized sweater to stop them from trembling. He gave a small, hesitant nod. "Mr. Volkov."
Nikolai’s chest tightened at the sheer vulnerability radiating from the boy. He looked at Sasha’s pale face and felt a sickening wave of self-hatred. He’s just a kid, Nikolai thought bitterly. A student who should be worrying about midterms, not dealing with a mafia syndicate's heir.
"My grandfather told me everything," Nikolai began, his expression hardening as he spoke of the old man. "He told me how he manipulated the situation. How he used your desperation for the scholarship, and how he... how he sent you into my room when I was not in my right mind."
Nikolai took a deep breath, his hands balling into fists at his sides. "I am not going to offer you hollow apologies. What happened to you in this house was a crime, orchestrated by my family's greed. I know I am a monster to you. I know you must despise the very sight of me."
Sasha opened his mouth to speak, to tell him that wasn't true, but he forced himself to stop. He remembered his pact with the grandfather. If he defended Nikolai or seemed too eager, the secret would be ruined. He had to play the part of the victim. So, Sasha just looked down at his lap, staying silent.
To Nikolai, that silence was confirmation of the boy’s terror.
"I came here to tell you one thing," Nikolai continued, his voice fiercely resolute. "You have total control here. I am giving you the choice. This child... do you want to keep it?"
Sasha’s head snapped up, his wide eyes meeting Nikolai’s intense grey gaze.
"If you do not want this," Nikolai said clearly, leaving no room for doubt, "I will arrange for the best, most discreet medical care tomorrow. No one will ever force you to do anything against your will again. My grandfather will not carry out his threats. I will protect you from him."
Sasha’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked at Nikolai, realizing the immense weight of the man's responsibility.
"And if... if I say no?" Sasha whispered, his voice trembling as he tested the waters. "What happens to me?"
"The scholarship is already paid in full. It is yours, unconditionally," Nikolai stated firmly. "If you choose not to have the child, I will buy you an apartment near your university. I will pay a monthly stipend to cover all your living expenses until you graduate. You will never have to work a part-time job again. I will take full responsibility for upending your life, and once you feel safe and secure, I will walk out of your life and never cross your path again."
Sasha stared at him, completely overwhelmed by the older man's hidden nobility. Despite being a ruthless mafia boss, Nikolai was willing to completely fund his life and leave him alone just to ensure his comfort.
Sasha quietly placed a hand over his stomach. The thought of losing this connection to Nikolai made a sharp ache bloom in his chest. He took a slow, steady breath, gathering his courage.
"I want to keep him," Sasha said softly, but with absolute certainty. "I want the baby."
Nikolai’s eyes widened slightly, a momentary flash of shock crossing his features before his expression settled back into a mask of solemn gravity. He nodded slowly.
"Then the deal changes," Nikolai said, stepping a fraction closer. "You will live here, in the main mansion, where my security can ensure your safety. Your scholarship remains active, and you will continue your classes online or via private transport. I will provide everything you and the child could ever need. But because of my position, and because my grandfather’s enemies are always watching, we must present a united front."
Nikolai looked directly into Sasha's eyes. "I will be cold. I will be strict about your security. But I swear on my life, Sasha... I will protect you and our child with everything I have. I will not let my world ruin you any more than it already has."
Sasha could only nod, his throat tight. The slow burn of their proximity had officially begun.
