Chapter 3 : Some Goodbyes Are Quiet

Some Goodbyes Are Quiet

"Not every goodbye is accompanied by tears. Some simply become memories before we realize they're over."

The days passed faster than Riya expected.

What had once felt like a frightening office slowly became a place she looked forward to every morning.

She knew who made the strongest coffee.

She knew which elevator was the fastest.

She knew who would always crack a joke during lunch.

Most importantly...

She had learned that the corporate world wasn't as scary as she'd imagined.

But one thing had changed.

Riya could no longer ignore the way Koushal treated her.

It wasn't just kindness.

It was attention.

The kind of attention that noticed the smallest details.

The kind that quietly stayed without asking for anything in return.

One afternoon, Swara sat beside her with a mischievous smile.

"So..."

Riya sighed dramatically.

"I already know."

"You do?"

"You think Koushal likes me."

Swara blinked.

"Because he does."

Riya didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked through the cafeteria window where Koushal was helping another teammate carry files.

"He really is a good person."

Swara nodded.

"He is."

"But..."

She smiled sadly.

"I don't think I can ever look at him that way."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

She paused before continuing.

"Maybe because I don't believe in love."

Swara frowned.

"You? The girl who watches romantic movies every weekend?"

"I love the idea of love."

Riya looked out at the cloudy sky.

"I just don't think it's meant for me."

---

A week later, Riya submitted her resignation.

Her university examinations were approaching, and she wanted to focus on them without any distractions.

The entire team tried convincing her to stay.

"Just work part-time."

"We'll help you."

"You'll definitely come back, right?"

Riya laughed.

"If life allows it."

Even Koushal stayed unusually quiet that day.

---

Her last working day arrived sooner than she expected.

The team decorated her desk with sticky notes.

"We'll miss your laughter."

"Don't forget us!"

"Visit after your exams."

Someone even brought a small cake.

Riya looked around the room, trying to memorize every face.

Just a few months ago...

These people had been strangers.

Now they felt like a small family.

After everyone left, she packed the few things on her desk into a cardboard box.

A notebook.

A coffee mug.

A tiny cactus Swara had gifted her.

As she walked toward the exit...

"Koushal?"

She turned.

He was standing near the reception area with his hands in his pockets.

"I wanted to say goodbye properly."

She smiled warmly.

"I'm glad you came."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

"I hope your exams go well," he finally said.

"Thank you."

"And..."

He hesitated for a second.

"...don't stop smiling."

Riya laughed softly.

"I'll try."

He smiled too.

"I'll miss having a friend like you."

The word friend lingered between them.

"So will I," she replied honestly.

She had never had a male friend before.

Meeting Koushal had taught her that friendships between a boy and a girl could exist without awkwardness.

At least...

That's what she believed.

Before leaving, she extended her hand.

"Let's stay friends?"

Koushal looked at her hand for a second before shaking it gently.

"Always."

As Riya walked out of the building, she turned around one last time.

The glass doors reflected the evening sunlight.

It felt like she was leaving behind a chapter of her life.

Not knowing another one was already waiting for her.

---

The following weeks were filled with exams.

Her room became a battlefield of textbooks, sticky notes, and empty coffee cups.

Her phone buzzed occasionally.

Koushal:

Good morning.

How was your exam?

Don't forget to eat.

Good luck for tomorrow.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Riya replied whenever she had time.

Sometimes immediately.

Sometimes hours later.

Their conversations remained simple.

Comfortable.

Just two friends checking in on each other.

One evening, after finishing an exam, she smiled at her phone.

Riya:

Exam went well.

A few seconds later...

Koushal:

I knew you'd do well.

She smiled.

He's really a nice person.

She put her phone aside and returned to studying.

Neither of them knew...

Life was quietly preparing them for different paths.

---

Months later...

Riya walked out of the examination hall after her final paper.

She stretched her arms toward the bright evening sky.

"Finally..."

She laughed.

"I'm free."

Swara immediately called.

"So, Miss Graduate..."

"When are you starting your job hunt again?"

Riya smiled.

"Soon."

She looked at the orange sunset spreading across the sky.

A strange feeling settled in her heart.

As if...

Something was waiting for her.

She just didn't know what.

Far away, in another company...

A young HR executive was preparing interview files for the next week's recruitment drive.

Neither of them knew...

Their story had already begun.
