The trapdoor slammed shut above them, cutting off the heavy hum of the slum's air fans. Siddharth let out a weak breath as Vanya guided his heavy arms over her shoulders. The darkness down here was total, smelling intensely of old engine oil and damp stone.
"Can you walk, flower boy?" Kael’s voice echoed ahead of them. A small, battery-powered flashlight clicked on in his hand, casting a narrow beam of white light down a steep, narrow stone staircase.
"I'm fine," Siddharth lied, his teeth chattering slightly. The deep fatigue in his muscles felt like a heavy physical weight. Every time he forced life to bloom from this dead world, it felt as though something was being drained directly out of his chest.
Vanya didn't say a word, but her grip around his waist tightened. She kept her shoulder firmly beneath his, taking most of his weight as they slowly made their way down the crumbling stairs. The small space between them felt incredibly warm against the freezing, stale air of the tunnel.
After what felt like hours of descending into the deepest crust of the sector, the narrow stone steps abruptly ended. They stood before a massive, circular vault door made of reinforced steel, sealed with a rusted mechanical wheel lock.
Kael stepped up to the wheel, grabbing it with his calloused hands, and strained as he turned it counterclockwise. With a loud, echoing CLANG, the heavy steel door swung inward.
A sudden blast of air hit Siddharth’s face.
He gasped, blinking in absolute disbelief. This air wasn't thin or metallic. It didn't burn his throat or taste like oxidized copper. It was thick, intensely humid, and sweet. It smelled exactly like the tropical rainforests of the Western Ghats after a massive midnight storm.
"Welcome to Sector 0," Kael said, stepping through the vault door and gesturing widely with his flashlight. "The last living lung of this miserable planet."
As Siddharth stepped inside, his jaw dropped. They were standing on a high metal catwalk overlooking a colossal, subterranean cavern that stretched for miles. Below them, illuminated by thousands of soft, artificial UV sun-lamps hanging from the high rock ceiling, was a massive jungle.
Lush green canopies stretched as far as the eye could see. Giant, alien ferns, towering ancient moss trees, and fields of strange, blue-glowing grass vibrated with life. Clean, clear water rushed through artificial stone canals, feeding the vibrant ecosystem below.
"We've been keeping this place alive for generations," Vanya murmured softly beside him, her amber eyes reflecting the beautiful green glow of the valley. "The Resistance built it in secret, tapping into underground ice rivers. It’s the only reason we haven't all choked to death on the surface's ash yet."
Siddharth walked to the metal railing, looking down at the magnificent view. The sheer beauty of it made his heart swell, but as he stared closer at the trees below, his expert botanical instincts noticed something wrong.
The vibrant green leaves were slightly curled at the edges. The bark of the massive moss trees was covered in small, sickly gray spots. Even the blue-glowing grass looked thin and frail near the edges of the water canals.
"It's dying," Siddharth said, his voice dropping to a somber whisper.
Vanya looked at him, her expression turning deeply sorrowful. "You can tell just by looking? Yes... the soil is losing its nutrients. No matter what synthetic minerals we pump into the water, the earth here is tired. In less than a year, the plants will stop producing oxygen. And when they die, the Resistance dies with them."
She turned to face him, stepping closer until her boots touched his. She reached out, her small, warm hands gently grasping his jacket, her amber eyes wide with a mixture of desperation and sudden hope.
"That's why we need you, Siddharth," she whispered fiercely, her voice trembling slightly. "The way you made those vines grow out of dead metal... you didn't just plant a seed. You gave it life force. You are the missing key. You can heal this sanctuary."
Siddharth looked into her eyes, feeling a deep, powerful connection blooming between them. He was a complete stranger from another world, but looking at her, he realized he finally had a purpose here. He placed his large hands gently over hers. "I will try, Vanya. I promise."
"A touching moment," Kael interrupted loudly, his boots clanging loudly against the metal catwalk as he walked toward them. His reckless grin was completely gone, replaced by a dark, furious scowl. "But we have a massive problem."
Siddharth and Vanya quickly stepped apart, turning to face the rugged rebel.
"What's wrong, Kael?" Vanya asked, her voice instantly tensing.
Kael held up a small, handheld digital monitor that was blinking with a frantic, red alert text. "The Enforcer squad that attacked us in the slums? They didn't just stumble upon Sector 4 by accident. My comms feed just intercepted an encrypted data transmission sent from inside our own encryption network."
Siddharth felt his stomach drop. "The traitor you mentioned?"
"Exactly," Kael spat, his eyes dark with rage. "The message contained the exact coordinates of our secret trapdoor entry. Someone right here in the sanctuary just sold us out to the High Council. The Enforcer reinforcement dropships are already landing at the main gates above us."
Vanya’s face drained of all color. "No... that's impossible! Only the inner circle of the Resistance knows the coordinates to this sector. Who would do this?!"
"I don't know, but we are out of time," Kael said, checking the plasma pistol at his waist. "The blast doors will hold them for maybe five minutes. Siddharth, you need to go deep into the center of the grove right now. If the Enforcers breach this place, everything burns."
Suddenly, the massive metal catwalk beneath their feet shuddered violently. A deep, booming explosion echoed from the heavy vault doors behind them, making dust rain down from the rocky cavern ceiling.
The internal alarms of Sector 0 began to blare, a cold, automated voice echoing over the beautiful green jungle:
"Warning. Perimeter breach detected at Sector 0 Main Gate. Defense protocols failing."
"They're here," Kael growled, drawing his weapon and spinning back toward the vault door. "Vanya, take the flower boy and run to the Core Tree. Do not look back!"
Vanya grabbed Siddharth’s hand, her fingers locking tightly with his. Her grip was trembling, but her gaze was fierce and steady. "Come on!" she shouted over the rising alarms.
As they sprinted down the winding metal stairs toward the lush green canopy below, Siddharth looked back. Through the smoke of the exploding vault door, he saw a shadow moving in the darkness—a lone figure standing on a higher observation platform, watching them run, holding a glowing communication device.
The traitor wasn't far away. They were already inside the sanctuary with them.
